West Coast vs Geelong JLT - Friday 1st March 2019

Am I the only one who's not liking these new rules (particularly 6-6-6)? They're just gonna bring about bruise-free footy. We used to marvel at how blokes like Pendlebury seemed to find an extra second of space in massive congestion, where lesser players couldn't. Now any mid that gets first hands on the ball is afforded that space; and once they get they get the clearance it's an almost guaranteed scoring opportunity. The term "aerial ping pong" has never been more appropriate.

I get the idea behind the rule changes: that they want free flowing footy and more one-on-one contests, but I can't help but feel that umpires will still over officiate these contests, leading to contentious/tiggy touch wood free kicks rather than spectacular contested marks or incredible spoils. I also feel like it limits the options that coaches have, in terms of structural setups.

Anyways, I know it's only the 2nd JLT game, but imo West Coast are just about monty's for the flag this year. They've got hands down the best kicking skills and "keepings off" game style in the comp, which will be heavily favoured with these new rule changes. Once they get Nic Nat back to ensure they win their fair share of centre clearances, it's a wrap imo.

I get the feeling you aren't very old.
Midfielders for almost all of time used to win the clearance and go forward with the ball. For the last 10 years they've gone backwards with handballs or kicked forwsrd to an outnumbered forward line.

All that's gonna happen is clearances will actually be important again and defenders like Rance will have to actually learn how to defend again instead of slamming around in space..

Changes look amazing so far to me, might mean clubs will develop rucks instead of using Bont an Grigg an making a mockery of the game

It will mean the likes of GC could lose by 200 points though because they can't flood the defense if being scored on heavily

Who cares?
I'd rather see forwards kicking big bags than GC just shutting the game down with 9 defenders and it being a tackle an slog fest deep in the D50 while they repel 8 inside 50s in a row.

It also might mean some upsets, maybe Gold coast get on a run from centre squares an kick 5 in a row. Who the **** knows?
Anything is better than the rubbish the game was turning into

I wouldn't necessarily single out the Suns, but if all teams have to face the risk of getting smashed if their mids cant stand up in the contest around the clearances, that's what the game should be.

I think teams will devise tactics to get get around the restrictions to some extent, perhaps by creating a secondary stoppage with no restrictions, but it's a good step in my view.

And it all fell into place when Goldilocks was drop kicked out of the club.

Pretty disrespectful to a club servant.

He gave nothing but 100% every game on the inside and as an extractor. Was never the fastest and so his ageing plus the speed up of the game in 2016 onwards made it worse.

He was not the list manager - of course he would keep playing so long as they gave him a spot.
In the end he was the one to call time on his own terms.

In some ways that is a little boring for the neutral supporter. I like watching other teams JLT games because we get to see new and talented kids coming through. I was excited to see Walsh play last night but looking through West Coast's and Geelong's lineups there is not a lot that is new about either team. Now I am not saying that is a bad thing from West Coast's or Geelong's point of view, but solely from the point of view from me it isn't as exciting as seeing a new draftee play for the first time.

Its a 26 man team in JLT. So Eagles played 9 non premiership kids.

Oscar Allen showed a glimpse of why the Eagles couldnt ignor him at 21 and took him ahead of Tim Kelly.

Francis Watson a Cat B rookie looked awesome and has big raps. Will be an upgrade on Jetta. 10 tackles, pace and line breaking run.

Petruccelle will be a player after 3 or 4 years in the system. Pace and skill just needs to revelop game sense after switching from basketball late.

J Cameron as a 18 year old small forward looked exciting. Again needs 2-3 preseasons.

Brander and Waterman did bits.

We Eagles supporters were more interested in watching the kids too but hey surrounding thise kids with 17 freshly crowned premiership olayers wasnt a bad look.:D

Watching the replay. 1st quarter.
How the hell did Vardy end up with the shot on goal after kneeing Taylor in the head nowhere near the ball?
HT blocked Vardy's run at the ball. Geelong players are not allowed to defend lol

GO Catters

For me the jury is still out but I must admit it did seem similar to AFLX at some stages and I hope it doesn't stay that way....then again, I'm now watching the Saints and Norths and it is pretty scrappy so maybe it was just Geelong and West Coast trying different tactics that made it a bit bruise free.

No one disagrees that he gave his all.

But he was bog average in nearly everything he did.

Opposition treated him like a joke, running off him at will. At every breakaway stoppage, we were always a man down as it wasn't he role to chase...because he couldn't. He just plodded from contest to contest.

They tried rebuilding a midfield around him twice. Everyone else had to step up, but not him.

So no I don't miss his hacked helicopter floater special kicks out of a stoppage, his routine handballs to players feet.

Held back our midfield for 10 years.

Good riddance, may we never ever recruit another bog average plodder like him again.

Darling did the exact same thing near the end of the game, that he did in the Grand Final. Picked up where he left off. His 5th goal he played on from 15 metres out to run into an open goal. What's the point? Learn from the Grand Final where he could have cost his team a prem. This time it's only JLT and the game was already won. But it shows his lack of judgement and recklessness. He put himself under undue pressure.

In the Granny last year take 30 seconds off the clock and seal the game from a few metres out. Spent it before he had it and butchered a guaranteed goal and win.

Aside from that, beast of a performance from the big man. Was the best player in the comp ( or most Valuable ) before he got injured last year.

Machine.
