West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

Their list strategy is on the right track.

Graham, Baker, Gross and Owies amongst their best today.

May have missed on Murphy Reid in last years draft, and Harleys going backwards but that won’t affect what clubs offer for him.

Oscar should net them a high draft pick too but for me he’s buyer beware with Ben Mackay vibes.

Did you watch Ben tonight or last season? He has been fine.

I love the people in this thread talking about 7 years ago like it's a tiny amount of time. The last time I had sex with my wife was 7 years ago. The last time I had gainful employment was 7 years ago. It's actually a really long amount of time now isn't it?
7 years is not that long, when you consider the Saints haven't won a flag in 59 years.

The Suns have never played finals in their entire existence, we shouldn't be oh poor me with the Eagles they have been one of the most successful AFL teams of the modern era.

Eagles Priority Pick 1
Dees Priority Pick 2.

It's fair and reasonable.
Hey ........................

What about us :D

I have an idea
Any team that wants a PP should have to have their coach and president verbally request it just before the draft on live television. That would be great viewing

Lowest ever recorded since they started 25 years ago.

Every single player other than Hutchinson had six contested possessions or less. 9 players had 2 CP or less, including the captain.
I don't know which captain but both of them have to be dropped. They are a disgrace. Whichever players voted for them need to be shipped off to the glue factory as they are dumb as dog $hit.

If you look in this very thread *******, you’ll see I don’t want a priority pick. We don’t need one, if anything I’d give a priority pick to a middling club like Freo who haven’t achieved anything in 30 years.

I’d take Bo Allan over the slow midget that is Murphy Reid any day, put them both in a contested situation and Allan wins the ball, Reid goes to hospital.
I'm not a scientist or a subject matter specialist, but I wouldn't back any West Coast player to win a contested ball.
It must be comforting to know that you're only a Bo Allen debut away from reversing yesterday's embarrassingly insipid contested ball differential.
I suppose we've got no choice but to continue to persevere with our consolation prize Murphy Reid.

The Eagles performances over the past couple of years is why the AFL should have relegation and promotion.

They are so poor that winless clubs get a significant leg up when playing them.
And their future on the park looks more grim than what it did 3 years ago.

I know enough to know Nicnat was AA in 2021 and you gave him a contract for 2023. How did that pan out?

I also know Gaff was contracted in 2024 🥺.

I also know Shuey was contracted for 2023.

So we know the club culture is to extend blokes too long when they can barely run and are carrying 100 injuries.

We all know it's going to happen again with Yeo and McGovern. Nothing is surer.

It's like watching a slow moving bus crash where everyone knows the outcome except those folks on the bus (e.g. you).

No he was right, you know less than **** all.

Gaff was contracted in 2018. We contracted a 26 year old the year he made the AA side and we won the flag. He retired at 32.

Are we really at the point now that resigning your own free agents when you are the top of the ladder is "your own fault"?

Meanwhile we get shitcanned for not extending Tom Barrass. The same Tom Barrass who played 19, 14 and 18 games the last 3 seasons when we won 10 games total. And was already contracted to age 32.

And we get shitcanned for lowballing Oscar Allen. Who played 0, 23 and 11 games the last 3 years.

Make up your ****ing minds people.

I hope the AFL are watching closely - i suspect what's happened to WCE will be fairly common for other teams that bottom out moving forward. Richmond and Melbourne are on the cusp of it now...

IMO this is significantly the AFL's doing:
  • Arbitrary and reactive meddling with rule changes (e.g. 666) impact list decisions that are difficult to undo in the short term.
  • Northern Academies & F/S (personally love F/S) but the Northern Academies are out of hand now. If you're not blessed with academy talent or F/S how can you rebuild when your second picks are now in the 30s?
  • Expansion of the competition - tasmania will further compromise upcoming drafts and dilute player pool quality. We already have too many players on lists that are not AFL quality. It's a shit time to rebuild right now.
  • Soft cap limits that benefit clubs that struggle financially to the detriment of everyone else. Coaches are being paid less than they were in 2019 yet the AFL weathered COVID successfully - go figure. WCE are lucky to be an economic powerhouse - but how can you attract the best coaches, development & medical staff when you're A) In a remote part of the country, B) Are a shit club that coaches don't want to risk sinking their careers at and C) You can't differentiate yourself/make yourself more desirable through paying higher wages?
  • Increased length of season affecting injury rates, especially for teams with older players (and disproportionately affecting those with heavy travel loads)
So should WCE get a PP? I bloody hate the idea of PPs but by the logic that NM got them, WCE should get them. The challenge will be what does the AFL do if my suspicions are correct and this becomes a norm.

I think your club should just get its act in order rather than blame everyone else for your club’s ineptitude.

my exact words were that you were complaining about your pick 19 being pushed out to 30, which I also stated was a fair complaint, and you now say you didn't say it?

No.

Two different conversations.

You said I blamed the AFL for where the Eagles list is at.

Never said that.

I don't like being unable to rebuild and the clubs picks pushed down the order by AFL policies deeming premiership teams and grand finalists in greater need for assistance.

There is a difference. Club made some errors. Most clubs do.

But some clubs are assisted to rebuild. Even when they no longer need the help

Where other clubs get no assistance at all and instead have their picks pushed down the order because the AFL thinks the premiership winning team needs assistance.

Reductive and unhelpful comment that fails to invalidate any of the concerns raised - I've also never said ineptitude didn't play a part in WCEs fall - it does for every club that reorves a PP. WCE were too loyal to underperforming players, gave extended contrats to players with significant injuries, and didn't adjust to the AFL changes soon enough.

Also ironic coming from a fan of a team blessed with 2x generational F/S & the lowest travel demands. Sidebottom & Pendlebury would have broken down years ago if they had to play for a team that travelled significantly.

How about you just enjoy your multiple over 30 players who are still firing on all cylinders due to rarely needing to fly or leaving the MCG due to the AFLs fixturing inequities.

Collingwood players gifted 3 or 4 years of additional service from the softest travel load in the comp. No wonder players want to play there.

The main issue is the concessions in recent years(father son/academies) given to clubs, either mid table or in finals, have made it near impossible for a club with zero advantages to build properly through the draft, due to how ridiculously compromised it is.

If the AFL doesn't want to give out PPs anymore, that's fine. They should just give WCE the same academy rules the northern states enjoy whilst competing for flags instead.

No. Father-sons are available to all clubs. There is no advantage one club has over another. We have had our fair share of father-sons who have failed. Just part of the ongoing development. Some clubs obviously do it better than others.

Just like trading and list management.

We have a good record on the road. I wish we played as many home games as West Coast. You should almost guarantee yourselves a win with every home game. We share the MCG with a number of clubs. Our ‘home’ games don’t really give us the same advantage as what you have.

But again, fix up your own mess rather look for an out. You’re ruining the game. As I have said in the past, it’s time the AFL has 2 divisions with relegation. That should fix it.

The AFL has two divisions already.

Those who get the rub of AFL assistance.

And the have nots.

Not hard to see which division the Pies are in.

There you go again. It’s not the Eagles’ fault they are worse than ordinary, it’s because the AFL doesn’t like them….

Don't you have access to father-sons?
You have a clear advantage in only having 1 other club in the whole footballing state of WA.

You have a 50% chance of forcing a trade for every WA born player who wants to return home.

They are far better odds than what Vic clubs have for any player who wants to return to Victoria.
