How about we do this.

You tell me at what time every one of those 3-5 fumbles you mention in that game on the back of the highlights.

Didn't watch these highlights I watched the full game. Only started timestamping from the 2nd quarter as I knew you would get precious about it. Other examples were in the 1st quarter and cbf going back to find them.

2nd quarter 11.30
3rd quarter 0.29
3rd quarter 14.21

You likely gave me his best game/example for your point. I just watched r18 rebels vs Oakleigh as I wanted to watch a full game of Lalor, Alger, Jagga Smith and Faul all at once. https://www.afl.com.au/ondemand/hig...-league-boys-match-replays?episode=1#round-18

In this game Faul another few fumbled marks. Should've taken all of them.

1st quarter 1.23 dropped mark
1st quarter 7.17 out bodied for a mark
1st quarter 22.35 should’ve went at the mark with 2 hands
3rd quarter 13.32 Dropped mark with 2 hands on it
3rd quarter 16.26 dropped mark. 2 hands on it. Bit of interference but still should take it

He wasn't really involved in this match so barely any contests for him. I don’t see 14th pick in the draft talent. He looks a combative battler type. I just hope we don't look back and not regret taking Murphy Reid, Berry or Allen at such an early pick here.

I'll keep watching different games as Jagga Smith was that far BOG in this game it wasn’t funny. Made everyone else look a level below

Gee some harsh critics in here
He's completely different to any other key forward on our list, bashes and crashes and I'm sure in an afl system
For 3 years he will improve significantly. Was the 1x forward I wanted the most because he's got that mongrel. Him and Armstrong complement eachother beautifully

Firstly, credit where it’s due; did the hard yards to make your point. I respect that.

But to narrow the focus your Oakleigh Charges v GWV Rebels game.

1st quarter 1.23 dropped mark - being held; should have be a free kick. But okay.
1st quarter 7.17 out bodied for a mark - think you have the wrong time stamp; this is a GWV mark but not to Faull.
1st quarter 22.35 should’ve went at the mark with 2 hands - clearly has one arm being held.
3rd quarter 13.32 Dropped mark with 2 hands on it - after doing the hard yards to create space. Harsh mark imo but okay.
3rd quarter 16.26 dropped mark. 2 hands on it. Bit of interference but still should take it - if we’re going to penalize every player for not clunking a mark with that level of interference, there’d be maybe one or two afl level players that wouldn’t be labeled as butter fingers.

Even if we count those above - and the others mentioned - as dropped marks, what % of that would constitute marks not held that should be held? Even with the most conservative glasses on with the harshest judge can’t see it being more than 10% Surely that doesn’t count constitute as ‘butterfingers’.

In terms of your concerns on body positioning I’d say that will take some time to develop, but he’s already ahead of Armstrong, Shanahan and both Whitlocks.

I have concerns around quicker taller defenders being able to get a fist and or close down on closing speed; and I had him fourth in my KPF rankings coming into tie draft. But a drop mark specialist he ain’t.

Even the best don’t clunk every single mark. How many does Tom Lynch drop in a game?

All your points are fair. Maybe I am judging him too harshly because I'm questionable on the pick at 14. Especially with the highly productive midfield/smalls still around that I mentioned early.

We also have painted ourselves into a bit of a corner to for next year in that if the clear best player available at one of the firsts is a key forward then we kind of have to pass on them. But that's probably for another discussion elsewhere.

Out of interest what were your key forward rankings if he was 4th?

1. Armstrong
2. Shanahan
3. J. Whitlock
4. Faull
5. M. Whitlock

I had Armstrong and Shanahan ahead based more on athletic profile (felt production was similar enough). Though I think they both play different to Faull and more run at the ball, similar to LeFau, Grey and Bauer.

The Whitlocks weren’t as productive as Faull but size and athleticism equate to a higher ceiling. Jack had more production as a KPF than Matt, which is why I had him higher.

I can understand why the club and other (e.g. Swans) had Faull higher than Armstrong and Shanahan; the difference between them isn’t great and Faull is a different type. The club seemingly valued those different traits higher than others.

Lead mark forwards tend to struggle at afl level. IMO.

he is the one i am most concerned with pick #1 from the stuff ive seen and looked since the draft. Lalor's highlights really highlight a young Dusty with the way he moves & plays, but as we know there is only 1 Dustin Martin & his greatness was all in the clutch play and intangibles. Thinking you can just get 2 of those in a row is a big assumption, lightning rarely strikes twice as they say. I worry that the lack of tank i've heard about & the 11 touches per game average are going to mean he avgs 2/3's of everything Dusty averaged & its near impossible to be as clutch as he was & he wont be able to manage serious midfield minutes. Once you take that into account, you are looking at a Jordan De Goey with a much better attitude and approach. And that is no bust at all - I rate De Goey highly and if he had a better attitude he could be a lot better. But i do doubt that he would be the best player in this years draft.

With Faull, he is the guy we picked i am the least confident about. The highlight video posted by Lobster didn't wow me & i can see the "shades of Samson" others have suggested. I'm just not a massive fan of that style of forward that he resembles now. My fav KPF at the moment are Curnow, Hogan, McKay, J.Cameron - & historically Richo, Riewoldts,Ablett, Franklin, Brown, Lockett. Modra. They were either ultra athletic with vice hands, or physically imposing to the point of being scary & he doesn't really fit that criteria for me. His analysis matched with his highlight videos makes me think he might end up being a around the ground ruck/fwd utility in the same way Chol kinda was. Never good enough to be the starting KPF or ruck, but good enough to be the best option behind them in the rotation. The video's gave me a "kick it long & see" vibes. He has workrate tho and doubt effort would ever be questioned.
