Can you imagine how nervous you'd be with those kicks? I'd be shitting myself they arent absolutely perfect
Had a basketball coach who'd played college ball in the states. He had a particular ex-college player who he idolised, and who turned up at his first college training... at which my coach promptly bounced the ball off his own foot :tearsofjoy:

I don't know if it's has been noticed already, or announced by the club - but Stanley has been given the #46 jumper according to the club's website:

i wish they weren't so scared to use the 16 and 29
Stanley isn't worthy of either number, as I just said above, 16 should go to Johnson.

They aren't scared to give out 29, Valente had it. Should go to Jye but doubt he wants it, he has his own favourite number. 29 Probably goes unused for another season.

being "worthy" of a number is so dumb imo. just puts unwanted pressure on a kid. either retire it fully or keep it open for the taking. just leaving it there unusued for years is dumb

There's obviously a pressure to looking at your locker and seeing "D. Mundy: Infinite Games: Dawn of Time to Five Minutes Ago" every day. You carry that with you literally on your back.

But you really shouldn’t. A number is literally a number and just that. If it was that important and brings that much pressure then just retire it. It’s that simple.

That's what has been done. Both Pav and Mundy's numbers have spent some time to cool off so there is a separation. Mundy retired last year as the games record holder for the club over almost two decades. Almost everyone else's locker has a shopping list of names on it, except yours.

If Johnson takes #29 next year there will be talk of him taking Pav's number into a game for the first time.

They won't escape it, but it's not like the guy's aftershave is still wafting out of the locker.

Are there that many players who would be particularly affected by the "pressure" of the number they wear that it impacts them in any material way? It'd be a pretty narrow field I'd bet.

It'd exist almost entirely as a thing in the imagination and musing of fans.

They all have a higher than standard level of elevated self opinion, yes. But they also have club cultures reinforcing playing for your team mates on milestones etc. It's hard to split those.

Here's hoping Johnson can deal with the pressure of living up to the great Jesse Crichton

Fremantle BigFooty breaks the news before it happens!

Mid-season draftee Ethan Stanley will wear the number 46 at the Fremantle Dockers, with the winger settling in during his first week at the Club.

Stanley had his first training session with Fremantle on Monday, as he makes the transition from playing amateur under 19s football 12 months ago to an AFL list.

The 19-year-old impressed this season as he made the step up in the VFL at the Box Hill Hawks, kicking six goals from his six senior games.

Stanley will be working to break a seven-year drought for the no.46 at Fremantle, last worn by Clancee Pearce in 2016.

Fremantle kit for a photoshoot.

“It feels great because when I was a young footballer that played Auskick and started getting to local footy, I had that dream of playing in the AFL,” Stanley said.

“It almost came to me that I wasn’t going to get to that stage. I just love how my footy has improved over the past couple of years and I feel really privileged to pull on the jumper, it’s unreal.”

Stanley will sit closest to Conrad Williams (no.45) and Matthew Johnson (no.44) in the locker room.

Johnson has already been a great help for the young midfielder as he finds his feet.

“Johnno was great helping me with my first gym session,” Stanley said.

“I followed him around he’s a good bloke to have around the Club. He’s just helped me heaps.

“It’s been a big change. It’s been full on to learn the differences being in the AFL and learning a new way of going about things.”
