This is a classic example of stupidity-
It holds around 75,000 people
Its only 30 years old

The AFL was forced to sell it because they wanted to make waverly park the home of football and play the grand finals there but the MCC treatend to sue.

If i was the AFL i would let game be played there and if i was a club like St. Kilda i would move back there.

correct me if im wrong because i dont live in melbourne, but i thought i read somewhere that it has already been knocked down to make way for housing? If so i think it will be a bit hard to play games there.

I go past it almost every day, and whilst not paying much attention, i'm pretty sure the ground itself is still standing.

Think they've only knocked down one or two stands, but yes, it's on the way our for mass housing, at exorbitant prices.

Never expected Mulgrave to be a boom area for housing.

The old members stand is the only thing left standing.

the remainder has been demolished for housing etc.

chances of games being played there NIL.

The entire corridor from Glen Waverley to Pakenham has been booming since 1960. You must have missed something if you thought Mulgrave wouldn't be developed as well eventually.

If it ever came down to Waverly or the telstra dome, l know where l would want to watch a game of footy.

Telstra Dome is awesome so that would have to be my pick. But to be fair, l never managed to watch a game at Waverly Park, so could someone please tell me, was it any good or was it a load of sheep droppings.

the grandstand is now around half that size. Two light towers are still standing, everything else is gone.

Many, many houses already built, and some being occupied I believe.

The AFL can still never be forgiven for decieving footy fans over it. They knew what people would think if they let the cat out of the bag too early. As footy fans why should we give them anything by turning up at the Dome? If no one goes there clubs won't be able to afford to play there and the AFL will realise that the people still have a say as it's forced to take football back to the suburbs where it belongs! We mighn't be able to get VFL park back but we can bleed its unloved and unlovable little brother dry, then its just a matter of time till the dozers move in!

It was a good ground very large and you could park two cars between the fence and the boundry line. It's major problem was that it got very cold and only way to get there was by car, and getting out was a bit of a headache, but all in all a good ground to go watch a game I went to 4 games at Waverley;)

Waverley was a crap hole. As far as I know it wasn't a matter of the MCC threatening to sue that prevented Waverley becoming the GF venue it was firstly the public that didn't want it and secondly the AFL that negotiated a deal with the MCC for ground rental/usage which included GF hosting among other things. It was all tied into the funding and use of the Southern Stand.

Waverley was never built to specs and was only ever begun to provide the VFL with a bargaining chip in MCC negotiations. On that basis an out of touch Aylett blasted the AFL decision to sell it. The reality is the world had changed and while Docklands wasn’t a direct replacement it and the fact that the MCC now realised they owed their stand to the VFL and any new development could only proceed with AFL finances meant they AFL had a much better hand than it did when Waverley was conceived.

The irony in all of this is that the Waverley rip off from design to implementation was successfully used again with Docklands which ultimately lead to Waverley’s demise.

Waverley COULD have been a brilliant ground, but the AFL abandoned it in the early nineties. Practically ceased all maintenance as they had their own agenda.

If they had of spent HALF the money they did on Telstra dome, they could have bloody well made it a fantastic ground. Fixed the carpark access, better seating and stands along with upgrading all the facilities to get in near what TD has.

The state Government needed to build a light rail from Glen Waverley station as well. Public transport was seriously lacking.

It is a shame.

Went to a couple of memorable games (including watching my boys get toweled up by the Hawks for the last game, Stynes & Bucky) there however for a bloke with *cough* pretty ordinary vision I struggled with it. The camber of the ground was so pronounced that if you were down at ground level all you would see if the play was down the other end would be torsos running around.
They never got council approval to extend the GW train line out there (even a light rail along Nth Rd would've sufficed) nor to build over the top and partially enclose the stadium (improve the atmos no end), which was why the stands were out so flat.
Later on when I drove I used to park in the Safeway carpark and would get out pretty quickly onto the SthEastern. Caught a train/bus just the once and was so trousered by the end of the game that I have no memory of getting home. Hawks v Coll when Coll were on a winning streak up until this game - this was the first of the three (four?) years when they didn't win a game in June.

Another irony Mark is that when they stopped playing there the surface was undeniably the best in the league. Like carpet it was (although the history of it was not so good - see Luke O'Sullivan about that). And they went from that to Docklands!
