Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Councilman in St Petersburg gets in hot water for comparing the war to a hunting sport. [GORN TG]

In short, he's opposing sport hunting of animals. But what caused a commotion was his argument that if someone wanted to kill for fun, they go join the Special Military Operation. After a collective "dude what?" from media, he quickly mashed the backspace key.

"Foreign agents began to interpret in their favor": St. Petersburg deputy Zinchuk justified his call to go to the "SVO" to kill for pleasure

Yesterday, St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly deputy Alexey Zinchuk spoke out against hunting animals at a meeting and stated: “If you want to shoot for fun, we have a contact zone, a special military zone.”

After these words, there was a stir in the media, and today Zinchuk tried to justify himself by shifting the blame onto "foreign agents": "Those who were emotional, or foreign agents, began to interpret it to their advantage. Allegedly, there is no need to kill animals, but go kill Ukrainians. This is complete nonsense, they give us weapons to defend our borders."

Russia makes some quiet agreement with Iran, details not revealed but seems to be related to enlisting Iran as a new customer for Russian oil. Taken from [Denys Davydov TG], quoting Russian media as the source.

Russian gas to be supplied to Iran instead of Europe, Russian media

We are talking about tens of billions of cubic meters per year. At this stage, Moscow and Tehran are discussing technical issues related to plans to export Russian gas to the country.

"If we talk about the volumes of possible supplies, we believe that we need to start with small volumes, up to 2 billion cubic meters," Putin said at a press conference after talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

In general, as the dictator noted, the Russian Federation will be able to supply Iran with up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Why would Iran take Russian oil / gas lol they have too much of their own already !

Rising cost of living in Siberia examined by [Siberian Express] news:
Speaking of Siberia. One of Chinese biggest grievances dates back to when the czars removed large swaths of territory from China, of course in a 'partnership without limits' you don't mention these things. One thing I recently read, which struck me as highly significant was this-

'Siberia has the resources that China covets: not only energy and minerals, but, more importantly, water. Lake Baikal is larger than Belgium and contains 20% of the world’s fresh surface water, which North China desperately needs'.

Wars are often about resources and 'water wars' have been proposed as a likely source of conflict as we move forward through the 21C. This article quotes research suggesting a 75-95% chance of significant conflict over water.

Putin is so stupid.

Putin is so stupid.
China, like the rest of the world, thought russia’s invasion would be quick and easy.
Russia may never be this weak (getting weaker) again.

Even if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump somehow ends the war, Putin cannot reverse these losses. And the longer it continues, the weaker Russia will become...

But the longer they stick with Putin, the greater their vulnerability to China will become.

The question is not whether China will turn on Russia, but when. China will eventually eat Russia’s lunch; the only remaining uncertainty is how big the meal will be. Russia has expended much of its Cold War arsenal on Ukraine, leaving Siberia wide open to Chinese ambitions.

I'd rather Lake Baikal stays with Russia (or whatever it might become) actually. They do consider its ecological health, unsure if China wouldn't just pipe the water out.

In 2021, Russian piped gas supplied to Europe was 155 billion cubic metres, in 2022 it was around 62 billion cubic metres and just 28 billion cubic metres in 2023.

In August 2024, the European Union (EU) imported nearly 2.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia. Over the observed period, the imports peaked at approximately 8.2 billion cubic meters in March 2022, a month after Russia invaded Ukraine.

An announcement in July that Iran would import 300 million cubic meters of gas annually from Russia..

Sanctions, a lack of investment, and mismanagement have plagued the Iranian energy industry for years. Iran has long imported gas from neighboring Turkmenistan, which has occasionally cut off supplies because of a lack of repayment.

There was an influential piece in China many years ago, called the 6 inevitable wars. The wars Chinese hardliners see as necessary to return China to its rightful place. Number 1 is Taiwan, number 6 is Russia.

In the sixth and final war, China takes on Russia, the world’s No. 2 military power, to reclaim large swaths of territory that Beijing claims were stolen by the Soviet Union. The author assumes that by 2055 to 2060, Russia’s power would be in decline and China would have a massive advantage, having recently won five other wars.

russia may have moved to "First War". russia's power is currently in "decline".
No other country would intervene militarily.

"The upward trend is very clear, very obvious," says Yuri Belousov, the head of the War Department at the Ukrainian Prosecutor-General's Office.

"Executions became systemic from November last year
[2023] and have continued throughout all of this year [2024]. Sadly, their number has been particularly on the rise this summer and autumn. This tells us that they are not isolated cases. They are happening across vast areas and they have clear signs of being part of a policy - there is evidence that instructions to this effect are being issued."

International humanitarian law - particularly the Third Geneva Convention - offers protection to prisoners of war, and executing them is a war crime.
