State Focus WA 2024 - Western Australia’s junior footy talent

I think WA may perform a little better than what people think in the carnival

But theyre better players are all very vanilla smaller types that are sub 180cm - Not really draftable types

Malakai Champion no certainty at all for me, not going to be easy playing small forward for the state side. Id say he's probably going to get through where eagles can try him for free at this stage

Still think Finn Henderson should atleast be in the state squad and a decent chance to be picked up

Just a down year, WAs had them in the past and then had strong years post that

Haven’t heard much from SA either, apart from Draper, Welsh and the Camporeale twins.

Might be a bit of a down year for SA as well.

The Allies won’t be as strong as last year (I’ll admit I know nothing of the TAS boys).

Gee EF colts blew a good chance beating Subi yesterday. Kept Subi scoreless in the last, only to kick 2.6 in the last quarter to lose by 4 points. EF didn't help themselves by kicking 0.1 in the 3rd though, kudos to Subi on the win.

Looked like a close contest for most of the match, though Subi kicked away in the 3rd quarter getting away to an ultimately 18 point match winning lead.

Looked like a good contest between the 2 x 17 yr old rucks....hopefully both will continue to develop for their respective sides over the season.

Not a bad line up—although, like you say "it may end up like this" (especially given that there appear to be more than 5 not in the 30 named so far).

The additional five players are likely to be named soon, so we'll see what the actual list looks like soon enough.

I'd be interested in hearing more about how the Colts Super Round went on the weekend from anyone that was there ...

I left out a few of the players from the original squad of 30 and added players I rate. Some of the original 30 selections were bizarre to say the least. Almost as if they were chosen on a wim by 1 or 2 influential AFL recruiters.

A brand new WA player on focus profile from noobermensch and this time it's the rapidly developing Bo Allan (PT). Catch all the player videos on this youtube channel in the link below.

Yea your right starting to change my mind on Bo Allan
As a mid liking how he plays as a defender just no
Will be interested to see his agility testing if its good i would use a pick around 20 on him
Hopefully he can keep growing as a mid who spends a little time up forward

As a late pick Hamish Davis has some appeal
Malakai I am just not sure on ? I think he will be there at pick 40
but not sure i would use that pick he feels a rookie pick more

Gerreyn can he play key forward or back then i want him, as ruck just a straight no

Weird year for me normally by now i have players iam certain about this year not so

Yeah for sure mate.

WA performed poorly at the state championships last year but it didn't make any difference. Many of the players were on the national radar already and their good colts form got them through.......in the end we got our 17 draft picks.

This year is different. A lot of WA players are coming from a fair way back and they must put their best foot forward against the other states/Allies.

IF he can look like that in the champs WC might just take him with their 1st. Such an impressive looking athlete

Squad not announced today. Not such a bad thing....hopefully some robust conversations are taking place before they name it.

I'd make it 38 - with form and injuries a concern - why not!

Love your efforts Futbolista. Have been reading the commentary as to how and when the 18’s squad was selected and the fairness based on how many matches were played both in pre season and the actual colts season. The conspiracy theories have been somewhat amusing to read. The reality is that a number of these boys will have been being tracked for a number of years both by state selectors and recruiters. If somebody has not been selected that has been in previous state squads or is thought of as doing well in their first few colts games this year, there would be a legitimate reason. More than likely there has been no interest from recruiters and they are not seen as draftable talent. Doesn’t mean they aren’t good footballers at a colts level, they just don’t have the required traits to have a chance of making it an AFL level. There is a very big difference. A few more will get their chance over the coming weeks or even once the carnival starts but they will still be choosing boys that have either had interest in them from recruiters or that the state selectors deem as possibly draftable.

The squad is a good representation without any glaring omissions from my observations. Perhaps a few bottom agers are lucky to be included but I assume that is because of the lack of depth in the 2024 cohort. The selectors obviously see more value in developing an under ager than including a 2024 good colts footballer that isn’t a chance of getting drafted.

Yeah but mate....we need some bread and butter ball winners (even if they aren't draftable) to assist those that are draftable and to make sure we don't get pumped by 10 goals. If we get pumped every match, then we won't even get to a target of 10 drafted and that would be embarrassing for WA.

I get what you're saying totally but I can't just give up on an entire year group. It's too early.

Fair Call. It does seem there is a genuine concern over the quality of our midfielders and as you said we do need to make sure we have some ball winners. I wonder if Bo Allen will have had enough time developing as a midfielder to have enough impact at a national level. At this stage he is obviously a better defender and where he has played most of his football.

Bo will be cool in the mid mate....he'll compete will Smyllie and that will be a task in itself....that Vic is a brute. 194cm mid ouch

And I'm backing Deian Roberts to play a physical midfield role for WA against whatever the other teams throw against him. He's 185/186cm now, has the ability to stand up in a tackle and get the ball out to a running player.

A strongly built bloke.....I don't think he will take a backward step and he has more than enough pace......it's just a matter if he can set himself to get enough of the ball to not just blunt but hurt the opposition. I think he can.

I'm going to ask noobermensch to do a Roberts player in focus video if he can fit it in. I think Roberts deserves it.

Second this. He’s the in and under midfielder of the group in my eyes. Plays with a bit of mongrel too which I like.

So the WAFL names it's squad but doesn't tell anybody who's in it! Anybody know.

Almost.

I suspect that it's the players named 'so far' (e.g. missing the additional 5 in the 18's, if they choose to pick anyone else that is).
