This has unfortunately become a self fulfilling prophecy. Koch is on the record as saying ex players can only join the board via the member elections. So outside the two member elected positions, the board will always lack football experience. Members identify this and seek to correct this by voting in ex players. This then supports Koch's claims that you can't have a member elected board because members will just vote in ex players.

I want a fully member elected board but between the time of Bolton and Koch, did we get many high-powered people nominating for the five member voted positions? Since being afl controlled it kinda seems like many of the high-powered directors we have were asked to join, and I wonder if they would have of their own accord.

Depends what you mean by high powered. There were business people who stood and were voted in by members when it was a 5 member elected and 5 appointed board between 1997 and 2008 or 2009 when it became 4+4 and the board had rhe right to appoint 2 experts in their field board members.

Those that have managed multimillion turnover environments. I don't remember enough of these types nominating for a member elected board position.

Thats a fair call. Probably the one closest to that was Ian McLachlan who was a senior partner at Price Waterhouse, was involved with the Vintage Cellars group and got into commercial property development.

From George. I filtered it down to 4 questions that covered everything asked and put them to him.

QUESTION 1

Do you think you can effect real change that can aid and kick start the club into getting it's DNA mojo (and reason for existence) back, as you are only one person against a stable Board with an ingrained culture of being risk averse and resistant to anything other than "stability" - despite results that indicate failure?

ANSWER

I have no doubt that we all want the same thing, to win premierships, the Board, the staff, the players, the coaches, the members and the supporters all want the same thing.
The difference is the how (strategy) how do we win a premiership.

You're correct I am only 1 of 10 which means I only have 10% of the votes.
How do I get the other 90% to agree?
Do my research and develop a strategy on where we are and how we get to where we want to be.
Position my strategy using factual information from the past, present and other successful clubs.
Trying to fight the board will only put them on the back foot and they will stick with the safe option the status quo…..been there done that.
If I fail the first time look for other ways to position the strategy and continue to reinforce the benefit to the club.

QUESTION 2

How does one board member of 9 get the message of accountability across to the other board members?

ANSWER

See above, also we could have 2 past players on the board who have the same winning mentality and philosophy, with a PAFC football upbringing, this will certainly help influence others on the board.

QUESTION 3

We have board member(s) with perceived conflicts and cultural misalignments, how do we challenge those members to change their ethos or get out?

ANSWER

Not sure what/who you are referring to but one thing I’d like to do is set up a members portal where members can voice their ideas, concerns, strategies etc. in a forum that is private and directly accessed by a board member without filters (similiar to Big Footy but private). This will be reviewed and tabled to management and if warranted to the board. Obviously who should be full forward or why I can't get a game will not get past first base.

QUESTION 4

-What is your position on the Board as it stands only having 2 member elected positions? Do you believe that Port should be following what is in Adelaide's constitution which states the possibility of a fully member elected board from October of 2028? If you agree with this premise, are you willing to be the public face of this effort for a completely member elected Board?

ANSWER

I flat-out reject that 2 member elected positions are enough I’m also disappointed that past players can only be Member elect.
My experience on boards is you need a balanced board with different skill sets.
There seems to be no consistency in AFL clubs for member-elected positions. I’ll have to do some research to find out.
I personally believe that Board members should be reviewed after 2 terms (6 years) and turn over after 3-4 terms (9-12 years), currently non-members elected can stay on indefinitely…..
