So our depth is shit lol
Knew Brandon wouldn't dominate going back to the twos.... doesn't want it enough

Silvestro and Ballard were our best players. Garthwaite Miles Stengle Chol and Bolton were our afl best for the day. CEllis got towelled up every time he went in the middle so they tried to hide him in the BL. He’s a total waste of space even at this level. He’ll be waiting to play Coburg where the guys will be as physically weak as him and smaller than him.
Balta wins his own footy and is still an exciting prospect. He’s Rance 6-7 years ago with his disposal, but has massive upside. CCJ is actually better than what the pre draft reports read and with a bit of sanding and polishing I reckon he will pass Soldo and Chol in 12-18 months time. Still haven’t seen enough though. BEllis was very good early , but was ineffective in the second half. At this level with our midfield consisting of Miles with VFL top ups Brando should be in there giving us first use by winning his own ball. The poster purr hana come on last week and criticised our vfl coaching staff for being stagnant with ideas and robotic with their methods as well treating players like robots, well it was on show again.
They were tactically asleep at the finish and got their pants pulled down by inferior opponents.
Wombat is the only bloke who would get a game in our seniors for the second week in a row. The rest need to lift their game.
We’ve got North next week and they’ve got some decent mobile tall boys led by Xerri. They have a solid midfield and Ahern is a ball magnet so I hope the boys in the fd are doing some real homework on their laptops. North are a young team similar to us and get scoreboard pressure up early , but tire badly.

Great report TI

Who's wombat?

i think you're clutching if thinking that game was decided on poor coaching, we lost a couple of crucial contests i50 late that should have resulted in scoring chances and never mind the number of botched goals in first half due to clumsy selfless acts that bordered on stupidity. This kinda stuff will happen with a youthful side I'm not too concerned with it. Agreed that garth and to a lesser extent stengle look closest to a senior berth on the game anyone else worthy of a mention floated in and out. Really like Garth as a key defender, backs himself to take a big grab or alternately sq the contest, has the old jimmy krakeor style drop punt however he carrys it off with effect,,,does have to come under senior pressure though which amps up 100% again on VFL

Chol

I am liking his progression, but still far from the finished article. Played a good game overall and showed his exciting potential with the occasional dumb passage of play.

C Ellis
I hardly noticed him, his forms seems to have dropped in the last 3 weeks.

Bolton
I was getting really angry at him in the first half, seemed to be too much a one way runner. He wasn't manning the mark properly and at least 2 occasions his opponent run off the mark easily. Also didn't seem to chase hard and put pressure on the opposition. In the late third / early fourth quarters he turned the game our way. Was instrumental in us regaining the lead showing some sublime skill. I had him in the votes for that reason.

He won't make in the AFL unless he mixes being a show pony with being a workhorse.

Garth
Was clearly best on ground at half time and was giving Schache a bath. The back line was the main reason we kept the margin down in the first quarter, as the Bulldogs were winning most the contests and loose balls. Unlucky to be 11 points behind at quarter time with the Bulldogs arsing a few long range set shots.

Garth continued on in same vein in the second quarter and was well on top of Schache. Schache got a couple of cheapies on him in the second half including the match winner. But overall had him second best behind Milesy. Is an AFL ready replacement if there is opening in the backline.

Stengle
Didn't notice him as much as in the first few games. Did some good things when combining with Bolton but not as damaging as he has been,

Good write up.

Just a weird game. Reminded me a little of us vs Collingwood last week without breaking them in the last or Carlton rd 1.

We dominated the game but almost to our detriment because the f50 was so clogged (dogs must have had at least 2 behind the ball, can someone at game confirm) our shots from goal were on shocking angles. Meanwhile it seemed so much fell the Dogs way, smothers and run down tackles would deflect and bounce to other dogs more often than not, they nailed about 6-7 shots from outside 50 and another couple from sharp angles, local knowledge certainly helped as our boys struggled to read the wind.

It was just one of those weird days where a lot goes right for the opposition and a lot goes wrong for you. But it’s a good learning experience for the boys, who probably rushed the game a bit too much and just lacked a level of class through the midfield to finish off those f50 entries.

Most of the team was good but no one was great, which is what we desperately needed.

Miles did miles things but was only good

Stengle and Bolton had outstanding moments and poor. They were the two most likely to break the game open for us but couldn’t do it often enough. Full credit to the dogs who flooded our f50 and left no room to move.

CCJ, Moore and Chol had some really good moments, but were all in and out of the game. Each had 2-3 contested marks they almost brought to ground but couldn’t, they each probably hold one of those marks every other week and generate another shot on goal.

CEllis played HBF and was okay, but really didn’t impact the game either. Needed to play him in the guts with Miles, 58 and Ballard just to add some class to the mix instead of just 3 workhorse/bulldozer type mids.

BEllis better version of CEllis. Disappointing thing for me was he did what he does at AFL, played his role solidly but had no interest in taking over the game. He needs to do that VFL level or he won’t return to the seniors. Another you needed to move into midfield

Menadue I have no idea if he’ll make it but with Garth our best. He races around players like they are standing still and such a lovely kick of the ball but can be a poor decision maker when disposing of the ball. Needs to slow down sometimes. And another I think would have changed the dynamic in the centre square.

Those 3 remind me of how Dimma moved Deledio and Dusty out of the square -
13-15 to try make the more dangerous and it worked okay but hurt our effectiveness around stoppages. We needed one to go and change up the dynamic.

Garth is just another Grimes, no fuss and dependable.

Balta was poor, he has no fear at ground level which is great, picks the ball up and breaks the lines. But a few lazy turn overs across HBF hurt. Will hopefully get better at that and use his prodigious kicking to break lines and clear zones not dinky 15m kicks he misses.

Drummond really looked quick and fit, thought he was on for a good game as he built back from the knee. To bad about his hammy.

Overall we outplayed them but bad kicking is bad Football. We lacked that class player just to convert our effort into more reward whereas the dogs capitalized on every chance they got.

Has stengle gone past bolton?
Baker seems to be one to watch
Hopefully another club dosnt steal Garth
If you were choosing between the 2 for a spot next week on recent form I’d go Stengle. Still think Bolton will be a very good player however st the moment there’s s few deficiencies in his game, one is ability to run out games and apply defensive pressure. Wombat has really improved in that defensive side of his game.

OPERATION MIDFIELD

Before I leave the premises today I want to basically point out the major weakness the rfc vfl side has. I’ve been watching them only on the web links this year, but the major weakness that stood out in last years GF is still there. This being that they lack midfield quality other than the old boys in Miles and Lloyd. You take Lloyd out and the oppo only need to apply a hard tag on Miles and suddenly it’s our VFL top ups left to do the work. This is why I blamed the coaches last night for losing the game. For crying out loud you have Brandon Ellis’s sitting on his arse on the HBF doing bugger all so toss him in there as I’m sure a premiership player would be a better option. Moore was also sitting deep in the FL for most of the game so why not bring him into the play and use him as a Caddy type. Garth goes to CHF and Chol deep. Make some moves please as you could see what was happening. The VFL clubs have worked us out so plan b needs to kick in.
For this years draft I would like the Tigers to look at genuine midfielders in their picks as we’re inundated with flankers ,wingers and tall talent. This is why people will continue to complain why Lloyd gets picked bc he simply is the best midfielder in the twos that is able to play to our game plan. Why do you think Jack Graham has walked into our side ? Midfield
depth that’s why bc CEllis Brando and others haven’t stepped up in this area. The club is playing Higgins imo to give him game experience , tank building and development so he can eventually move into this area of need. Again he’s gone passed a few after just opening his locker as I predicted he would. If we lose Miles and Lloyd next year and don’t solve this issue I will see us being a middling side.
If I was Stengle I would be doing a Townsend and asking for a positional move into the guts as he could reinvent himself and end up being a future senior player.
We will continue to struggle in big games as we’re being opened up easily in this area as we’re night getting first use often enough and most of our MF don’t run and spread to cover the ground. We were found out at ES in the GF and we were found out last night on a tight circuit where you need to win contested ball and run and spread all day long.

Mentioned on another thread that we should look at trading Bellis & McIntosh(While their currency is at its peak) for this very reason. We need a few classier mids to come through and this years draft apparently runs deep.
Miles & Lloyd won't be here next year.

Kmac I would keep unless his manager starts shopping him around and over valuing him. I agree on Lloyd and Miles and on Brando if he went I wouldn’t be fussed bc we would get the same from Menadue or Markov at a cheaper rate with possibly more upside. They would want to both improve their tanks though.

I think I said this about six months ago, but CEllis' peak was about 12 months ago.

Markov is an interesting one.
Outside of his brilliant debut, where everyone went way over the top and people were anointing him a 200 and 300-gamer, I really haven't seen a lot that enthuses me about him. I may be missing something, but he doesn't overly impress me.

He’s struggled with fitness and missed this week. Last week he was playing a blinder until he went off injured. I rate him well above Menadue , but I can see your frustration.

He has all the tools - speed, athleticism, disposal. I reckon he could step into the 1s and play across hb no probs, with Rance, Grimes etc.. directing him. Short is killing it at the moment and Menadue probably inffront of him too, so it's a hard team to crack. But well worth persevering with imo, looks like a late developer.

Hope you are right Charles.
And yes, Shorty is going to be very hard to dislodge.

I think Lloyd (depth player) will probably be offered another year. He's nothing special but has shown that he is capable of playing a role at the top level and he's only been playing midfield for the last 12 months.
