Is it possible to do Maths Methods 3/4 in year 12 when you have only completed year 11 general maths 1/2?

A friend who is trying to get into a course that requires Maths methods...problem is that he is not good enough to do Methods in year 11...

I did vce in 2006 and ive been a tutor ever since and i have to say definitly do not do a subject simply because it gets marked up. Pick subjects you enjoy and are good at. I did English, Lit, History, Geography Legal and Texts and Traditions and got a good score (high 90s) because i enjoyed them and was good at them, however none of them got marked up much (although history definitly should!) Same thing with my students ever since - the ones that enjoyed their subjects did much better then those that chose subjects simply because they were scaled. Think about it this way - why do a subject where you will get 25 and have it scaled to 35 and put yourself through torture when you can do a subject which you enjoy and could possibly get 40 without scaling? also keep in mind - if you do a subject like methods and your not already brilliant at it - all you'll do is spend all your time on that one subject rather then working on all your other subjects equally. Again, a scaled 35 in methods isnt much use - if you lose a bunch of points in all your other subjects because you couldnt give them enough attention.

Finally - what one person considers a good subject, might not be right for you. I personally would recommend legal studies because i found it interesting and more importantly, most of it is rote learning so its not too difficult, but if you find that subject dull as anything it wont make much difference....

I did;
German
English
Methods
Accounting
Economics
Systems tech (Automotive)
AFW1001 (1st year accounting) at Monash Uni

Had my VCE expo on Wednesday and think I'm going to do these:

English
RE (forced to do it)
Maths Methods
General Maths (Specialist)
Physics
Accounting
IT Applications

As you can see Maths is my absolute strongpoint. In the tests I've done this year I've got: 97%, 100%, 100%, 100%, 84% & 95% (Exam).

RE (forced to do it)
Ahaha damn.
Maths Methods
General Maths (Specialist)

That 84 is a bit of a worry. I'd drop specialist if i were you.

not.

My highest mark was 45 in Methods because it gets marked up so I'd strongly recommend doing subjects that get marked up. I averaged 91% for my coursework in Visual Com but I was average in the exam and it gets marked down so I only got 35 for that. So do subjects that get marked up. :thumbsu:

This (minus the 45 and methods bits).

If there was one thing I learned about the system in year 12, it was that unless you're willing to put in a lot of work, don't pick the 'easy' subjects just because they look easy.

They might seem easy, but a couple of dropped marks here and there, combined with a dodgy exam mark could turn an expected 40 into a 30 after scaling.

Case in point: I was deciding between Health and International Studies, and ended up picking Health. Was originally aiming for a 45, but didn't go as well as expected, ended up with a 40 that was scaled down to around 36.6. Had I picked International Studies instead, IIRC, all I would have needed was a 34-35.

Why do you have general maths with specialists in brackets? The four maths that were around when I was doing VCE (03 and 04):
1. Specialist Maths
2. Maths Methods
3. Further Maths
4. Foundation Maths
Because Specialist is called in 1+2 General maths A and goes onto specialist in 3+4.

If you're not already getting at least 75% in Year 11 Maths I would not recommend Specialist. Because more than likely you'll need a tutor and spend a shitload of time on it which will fustrate the hell out of you.

If you want an 'easy' subject, Accounting is the one you should look at. If you pay enough attention in class you should be able to get 85%+ on most exams.

Lol it was still the second best in the class.

For some reason in year 11 if you intend to do a maths (maybe just methods) you have to do one strand of General Maths (Further, Methods & Specialist) also. The recommended minimum for doing MM & GMS was 75% on all tests. I'm not too sure whether I'll do Specialist in year 12 but I'm keeping my options open.

I'm currently doing 1/2 Lit in year 10 and I'll continue on with it next year but could someone explain to me what the advantages are of doing the extra subject? I'm not really up to date with how the VCE scoring works.

I did Specialist, Maths Methods, Physics, English and IT and the only subjects that were useful for what I'm currently doing at Uni was the latter two.:o

If anyone likes IT, I'd recommend doing a Bachelor of Business in Business Information Systems. Quite enjoying it at the moment. You get your fair dosage of the business degree which includes Statistics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Accounting, Organisational behavior, Marketing, Commercial Law, etc while on the IT side you get programming (java and vb), web development, networking, security, systems analysing and design and much more.

Rated one of the best IT courses in the world.

Might have to actually look into that course. I'm into IT and the business component of it sounds good. At the moment I'm keeping my options open and would be looking at getting into an IT or Business course.

I'm in Year 10 and I have no clue what I subjects I should do next year. I'm looking to do Journalism at Uni so the only pre-prerequisite for it is a decent mark in English, so I've got pretty much a free range of options.

ATM my average is good enough to be recommended for Methods, but I hate Maths with a passion, so I'll probably just do Gen B or whichever one leads into Further.

I'm also looking at doing Legal Studies and maybe History, but apart from that I've got no clue.

Any suggestions?

With the exception of the constitution, most of the content in Units 3 & 4 Legal Studies you'll do in units 1 & 2. What you learn in year 11 for this subject will help you exponentially in year 12.

If it's Journalism that you're interested in, then it could be worth trying your hand at year 11 Literature. The advantage of doing Lit in year 12 is that it will replace English in your top four if you fu.ck up in English.
