VAFA General Discussion

Your the one arguing that the umps shouldn't get more funding, The job of umpiring requires a lot of work for more than you think or care to recognise. As the years go it'll need more funding, why this is so hurtful for you to grasp is bizarre to say the least. Go find a stress ball or something.

As for your comment the vafa had tried and tried, name a well funding project re recruitment that has been either a) maintained or b) successfully implemented.

What money is spent on education for club based Reserve level umpires ?? Currently ZERO. What effort is spent making sure these umps have any level of registration or basic training. You Currently require more training and more checks and balances to umpire under 9 juniors than you do A or B grade 2s footy. So how again is the VAFA going with its level of funding for umpiring??

Country leagues pay travel so that helps. I moved from the VAFA to country and earned more and whilst you might travel more kms, it’s still less time than travelling around the south eastern suburbs.

But on the 12 hours, if you count travel time it’s well over 12 hour commitment every week if you train twice.

3 hours on a Monday, 4+ hours on a Wednesday and 6 hours on a Saturday.

Unlike regular jobs where you’re going the same place every day, you go all over Melbourne.

A lot of leagues also have different training venues when people are spread over.
3 hours on a Monday?? If umpires are training at Elsternwick Park then it must be late at night! I walked the dog though their last Monday & only saw a bunch of kids throwing the balls up

I got recruited by a recruitment campaign run by the umpires association, it got shut down because they were recruiting too many umpires and the league couldn’t afford it!

Vafa umpires are also the most travelled driving 2 and 3 and sometimes 4 tmes more distances than any other local ump. They are also required to give 12 plus hours a week to be able to umpires at the higher levels, then those in lower levels are required to at times umpire multiple games a week. Large numbers of umpires have left over the years due to the lack of coaching from the middle level down, this requires more coaches, then to attract and maintain levels at the top end they require greater levels of coaching to assist in their development towards VFL and AFL levels. Then there is the cost of recruitment currently very little spent in this area. Ideally the VAFA need ro double the size if the umpiring department if it was to fill all games every week (big task) Clubs want a comp, it comes at a cost PAY it or close the doors. It's pretty simple. The ridiculous and uneducated comment of "VAFA umps are the highest paid" is simple and example of people with very little to zero knowledge of the problem and or the solutions needed.
How about having more than 1 training base for umpires and appointing umpires to games closer to where they live?

Maybe have umpires do more than one game? Field umpires only do one game. They even send goal umpires for an U19 game at 9.20am and a new set for the senior game at 2pm but don't bother with any for the reserves game in the middle.

And maybe stop all the self promotion when a few make the VFL list and instead worry about servicing VAFA games right down from the top to the bottom. Too focused on elite umpires and not enough on covering the games.

I know that the Northern & Southern Footy Leagues, Field and Goal umpires double up in reserves & seniors. Some do 19s and seniors. Why doesnt VAFA field umpires ever run 2 games on the one day? And with Prem A field umps having 3 field umpires, I don't think it too much to ask them to double up with 19s at 9.20am and 2pm! Surely its not a fitness issue?

I've been at a fair few Collegians games where following the senior game concluding at 4:30pm that the umpires would then double up and do the female senior game.

Not an easy task getting umpires to double up week after week.

Mike, young fit umpires in Prem A-C squad should be able to handle 2 mens games. Womens games (across every metro comp) should have only 1 field ump!

Not back-to-back. You'll lose umpires and lower the standard.

Let’s be honesty it’s only the Uni and The Pit that need 3 umpiresin Prem A. Whilst in Prem B it’s only the Lodge and Willy that don’t need 3 umpires. Imagine running the following with only 2 umpires. The Daley, Gordon B, Brunswick St, EP, Como, Dunshea and Boss.

By the way. Our Reserve Umpire is a 17yo female, who goes ok, and the players are very respectful. It’s been some opposition umpires who have been disrespectful and not helpful at all. Also the VAFA should be chasing this girl, as there are not other female umpires in the VAFA. Bring back Norm Nugent who would watch young umpires. Still have his notes from 95 year

Stop chewing Crayons.

This is an absolute key for the VAFA. I chose to umpire in my local league for the very reason I live a long way from Elsternwick Park.

If some clubs are leaving the VAFA based on travel of course umpires are leaving for the same reason.

Return of the Anthony Molan Cup.

The first time in a number of years that the Seniors will be playing for the trophy named in memory of Anthony who tragically passed away in a Club XVIII match against these two sides in 2003.

A huge crowd is expected for the pregame lunch and a great opportunity for friends, family and both clubs to remember a young man who's life was cut short playing the game he loved.

Fitzroy is playing Willy CYs on Anzac Day.
It's a B Grade game and it's NOT being televised.

And probably get the biggest crowd.
Was pretty big.

Merv being Merv paid a free kick against the Fitzroy coach for being outside the coaches designated area. Admittedly Trav was some 25-30 metres outside the area. Didn’t end up costing a score.

Hopefully no. 64 is back at Essendon next week. Way too good again.

Max “always spying” Leader

PS love to see the best A Grade team take on Heidelberg. Saw them demolish the 2nd team by 120 points. Ridiculous and boring.

SKOBAFL beat Montmorency by 40 in preseason. Therefore By my math Heidelberg would have ScotchiesVFL by about 10 goals
