I couldn't give a **** about numbers. I don't get why so many people care. It's just a number to identify a player.

Give em which ever number they want. No one would that Lalor was #4 if he was delisted in 3 years. Well maybe the number nuffies....
yeah i'm mostly baiting the dimma traditionalists who wanna "make 'em earn it". i personally don't care what ends up happening

only thing i slightly care about is lalor and smillie getting 4 & 9 since they're bold enough to ask for it. whether it's right away or in a year or 2 idgaf

From memory Cotch had his own controversy around his number as well when he refused to take 17 off Newman after Cotch was given the captaincy that had become a bit of a tradition for the captain to wear 17
Happily, the tradition only lasted for two captains.

Lalor wore 4 for Rebels.
Faull wore 8 for Rebels.
Armstrong wore 12 for Sandy.

I'd give them those.

Mansell Number 7.
Smillie 9.
Hopper 2.
MRJ 17.
Hotton 29.
Trainor 11.
Sims 24.

yeah we took the idea from Port Adelaide giving the number 1 to their captain so good riddance to it when Cotchin had the guts to say no
Port Adelaide had always given their captain #1, as had Collingwood. I think it was the late 70s when it stopped at the Pies (Ray Shaw was captain in 1980, and he didn't wear #1). It's an interesting idea, and happened in a few teams from all sports around the world. It came from the days when umpires/referees needed to identify the captain.

I'm not a fan myself for professional sport. The players are what is important - not the number. That only exists for spectators to identify who the player is. There have been at least a dozen players to wear #17 since Dyer - it's not 'his' number - it's the identifier he happened to wear. It wasn't #17 that made him a great player.

The thing about #17 being Captain began when Ian Campbell basically decided that, to increase Richmond's 'marketability', we should basically turn into 'Dyerland'. Everything became Dyer-flavoured. We even gave the mascot an official name 'Tiger Stripes Dyer' - yeah, that's easy for the little kids to say.

If Lalor wants 4 give it to him. I'd end the bullsh1t high number nonsense now that we've had a massive clean out. Would be silly with half the top 20 numbers vacant and a logjam of players with number 50 odd on their back. Only number I'd keep vacant would be 12 and would love it if after 1 or 2 seasons Richo decides who he wants to wear it out of our 3 shiny new kpf.

I do like the sound of Hotton in 29 after Bolton and KB but....
Ew Mansell no. 7????? If he's still best 22 then we truly are dreadful. Alger, Hotton and Judson will squeeze him out. Campbell has a bigger upside, Steely Green more forward nouse and Lalor’s probably gonna be slotted into the fwd 50. I wouldn't be surprised if Shorts finally moved to HF to capitalise on his lethal goalkicking from beyond the arcs. I personally don't rate MRJ and 100% if his name was Drummond, English, Fraser or Joe Bloggs don't even reckon he'd be playing magoos, but they probably wanna play him too.

Mansell has got the most out of himself but he's a limited, bloody ordinary footballer who was just OK in the worst team in our history. Time to move on.

Think I've changed my mind on this tradition of earning a number. Ben Lennon got a number upgrade 😂😂😂😂

Personally I think the only thing Cotch did wrong in his time at the club was not take on the number 17 as captain. Would have loved to see him wearing that holding up the cups. Doubt it will happen but with Rioli gone now could be a chance for us to revisit that tradition of our skipper wearing it.

It's funny how the mindset of supporters can be so different.
I love that Cotch did it his way.
