Was his best game for the club so far this season, yes. In typical fashion though, he’s ruled himself out of the first QF leg with that moment of madness at the end in sliding in to earn a yellow card, and suspension.

Merino looking more and more like a striker. The volley that was saved off the line by Sanchez was crisp.

And Trossard can't kick. He's lost his mojo. Last season's version would've had two on the board today.

Jover has definitely been cooking something different lately. The short corner routine was noticeable from the outset. Timber had a flick on earlier and it’s a routine that takes me back to the Bould days.

Very nicely done by Merino, whether he’s aiming for the back post or not I don’t particularly care haha as goals have been very hard to come by lately in the PL. Winless in the prior 3 before this match. So this is a very welcome 3 points.

I actually believe it’s time to move on from the Merino experiment. It’s not his fault of course, he’s a midfielder by trade. Our link up play, build up, the routines were accustomed to with Havertz as the 9, back towards goal etc, these are not strengths of Merino. Again, understandably. If Trossard was in better form, I wonder if we’d see an interchange of him and Martinelli as the 9. His volley though was very technically done, not often you hit it like that and well saved in the end.

I like Merino as a substitute option. Whether as the 8 or up front, he has excellent timing to enter the box and is a back post threat. Paired correctly, with the right players around him, that’s a good option to have up your sleeve. Interesting to see how this develops in the build up to Real Madrid.

Very impressed with Rice and Gabriel. Thought they were outstanding. Raya with a rare blemish however given the quality he’s produced this season, he deserves the element of luck that it didn’t go in.

This was a very important 3 points. It wouldn’t reflect well on the club if we tumble out of 2nd and completely fizzle out in the league season. Still need to see this through even though clearly the sights are set elsewhere.

Lastly, special mention to another laughable officiating performance from “you left me no choice” Kavanagh. It’s not that significant because Arsenal won however can just imagine the narrative if the roles were reversed. Fofana being allowed to stay on the pitch, **** me. A stamp on Rice’s hamstring, ridiculous. In addition to the constant moaning and dissent which just seems an early season edict that the refs clamp down on but over the course of the season they don’t seem to give a shit about.

Entering the international break with a spring in your step can make all the difference. Saka continuing to ramp up his recovery in the background. Yes please. There’s still plenty to focus on in the coming weeks.
