One thing that shits me is that the AFL need to do an audit in the 1st place

If the AFL was keeping an eye on everything as they should be in order to ensure everyone is playing within the rules it wouldn’t even be needed to be done

Just highlights the AFL’s incompetence again

Turned out to be a big nothingburger yet again. The $10,000 question is whether Geelong let the AFL have a win in the eye of the public or if we go for a repeat of the Morris Finance soft-cap screwjob. Better luck next time fellas.
Sounds like they have discovered the bread crumbs. Just a bit more time before Hansell & Gretel get to the gingerbread house.

Isn’t “auditing” the most fundamental way of “keeping an eye on things”? I’d have thought the afl would be auditing most/all clubs reasonable regularly (every few years at least).

Maybe I’m overestimating the league’s professional capability.

That’s pretty much what I’m getting at

We know across countless sporting leagues all over the globes both professional and amateur that clubs can’t be trusted

So why isn’t the AFL constantly looking at all clubs all the time, every player and every deal that covers both the hard and soft caps to ensure the competition is fair

For the AFL to be looking extra closely at any one club means that they hadn’t been doing the due diligence in the first place

With the amount of money the league pulls in surely they could have a couple of forensic accountants on staff to just make it an ongoing part of the league’s practice to ensure a fair comp

I’m sure there would be some form of ongoing audits in relation to salary caps. Audits however aren’t absolute assurance engagements, sounds like these may be more targeted.

I don't think you understand what an audit it.

Don't be silly, that would mean less pay for the AFL executives.

I understand all that, but the comment was about the optics. I agree with your points about each player, but one could also add:
Kennedy - lock for best 22. Nobody's going to argue that. Top 10 BnF.
Owies - only player to kick over 30 goals outside McKay/Curnow. (Next best I think was Cripps?). From an outsiders POV it looks a little bit of a head-scratcher.
Carroll - played 15 games in his third year at the club. Looked to be building nicely. Saints thought he was worth a list spot.
Martin - Geelong thought he was worth a list spot.
:)

The optics are that they cleared some salary cap space to not breach the salary cap.

How much do they have the power to audit?

All clubs would be fine regarding their books - anything dodgy would be related to third party payments to players. Do they have the power to actually do much investigation of player's finances.

Of course audits need to be done.

The AFL would have everything on file as recorded - X is earning this much, Y is getting this much from Z.

An audit is when they dig into club and player finances to ensure that those records and contracts are truly reflective of what is happening.

They’re not constantly watching every dollar that goes in or out of clubs or every dollar a player receives - they audit to check all that.

You think the AFL should watch every bank transaction of every player in the league?
