Victorian Clubs Target Forgotten Sun for 2018

Trent McKenzie, 25, has been stuck on 99 games for over 12 months, with his last game coming in round 14 against Hawthorn.

It is believed that the man known as ‘The Cannon’, due to his penetrating left boot out of defence, has fallen out of favour Suns Coach Rodney Eade and wants to make a fresh start at a new club in 2018.

A calf injury and most recently a hamstring injury has kept McKenzie from making an appearance in 2017 and with his contract set to expire, it be understood a number of Victorian clubs are beginning to circle for the 25-year-old signature.

McKenzie is currently stuck behind Kade Kolodjashnij who has taken over the role as the Suns tall running defender and is making it difficult for McKenzie to crack his 100 game milestone in 2017.

It is believed the 5 clubs lining up for McKenzie services, are Richmond, Essendon, North Melbourne, Geelong and Hawthorn, who are understood to be leading the race for his services.

McKenzie has made 99 appearances for Gold Coast Suns, kicking 22 goals, since making his debut in round 1, of the 2011 season in the Gold Coast Suns inaugural AFL match against Carlton at The Gabba.

The article reads that Hawthorn are leading the race, and given their present desperation, I suspect they would go to a contract price and/or trade that others wouldn't match.

McKenzie has no FA status, so a trade would likely be required.

GC would ask for Preuss.

Swap for Swallow and a pick.

Swap for Swallow and a pick.

Well, considering the club are fast approaching the point where Spitta is not a priority for senior selection, and that the Swallow brothers have always been public in maintaining their wishes to play together, then that is feasible.

How valuable is McKenzie to us? He's a slowish 190cm flanker type, with his single point of difference being an elite skill.

Has Brad Scott ever exhibited the tactical flair to utilise a player like McKenzie? Nope.

Swallow is a rising 30 year old with a sound body and a fairly consistent level of output. The Suns have shown they are not presently completely averse to his type of player considering they placed Barlow on their books (30 in December) and he has now gone down with a busted leg.

If a cherry were required, then it wouldn't be much. Our 3rd round pick (~45) at best, and would this have any great value for the GC? Not really when you consider they already currently have 6 picks ahead of 45 (5,20,22,24,30,40).

Turn it up.

Mullett is a very average footballer who wouldn't look out of place at Werribee.

8th in the competiton for rebound 50's.

11th in the competition for disposal efficiency.

Do you think we have Byron Pickett and David King wasting away in the seconds?
