I am ashamed if real Bulldog supporters are lowering themselves to the levels outlined in previous posts re: facebook. The whole point of me starting this post was to point out how low that 'woman's' action was. I would have hoped we were above her. Not that I've seen the facebook page, but it saddens me to read about the comments.

IMO this thread started by you was a valid one. As bulldog supporters we were appalled by seeing our captain having beer tipped over him by a woman in the crowd, and as such we are voicing our dissapproval of this behaviour and/or advocating that she receives some sort of appropiate punishment from the relevant bodies. I have no problem with this at all.

But IMO the facebook group and other related type mediums take it to a whole new level. Their purpose is to pour scorn or attack this woman in question. And the trouble with something like that is that there are so many guys in society with hangups about women just like there are many women with hang ups about men. So this type of site is giving a green light for these types of people to unload their hate or vitriol on her and advocate all sorts of things. It is not nice and IMO is way over the top for what she actually did. What she did was bad behaviour but if people are conducting their behaviour worse than that in response to her bad behaviour then what does it say about them?

In all fairness, there has not been TOO many horrible comments. The bad ones, a total of 4, were removed.

To think this is opening up a world of hate towards females is just dumb. No one has said anything against women as a general. Yes, she is copping a lot of slack. Why? Maybe because she threw a beer over Brad Johnson on national TV. People are furious, and have a right to be.

To be pussy footing around saying she's going to get harmed because of this is silly, over-estimated judgments. Yes, the general public is mad, it's not a hate group, it's a fair, expected reaction.

Noone has said that it is opening up a world of hate towards females. What I said is that there are many people out there with issues against women or people in general who will use this as a platform to spew vitriol.

I undersand your stance taken against her behaviour but to me having a site dedicated purely to the lambasting of one individual seems to me anything but fair. It is a kind of bullying, 500 or so people ganging up to abuse this woman. And okay you are probably normal but there are heaps of people on the net who arn't.

It just doesn't sit comfortably with me, but maybe I am in the minority, so I wouldn't place too much weight on my opinion. I don't see the problem with letting the authorities deal with it and letting her face a ban or whatever.

just on the news she Apologized to brad Johnson, the AFL wont take matter any further, but Lions still looking into it.

If she is sincere about it then fine I don't think she is though. She seemed pretty proud of what she did afterwards. Had she not been caught on TV she would probably be still bragging about it to her friends like she probably was doing on her phone Saturday night.

"I'm sorry" are just words. She's still a piece of trash in my eyes.

We've all done things we regret.

In cold light of day, she has apologised.

I still think she should be banned for a period of time, but he who has not sinned, cast the 1st stone.

Sorry TBFB, but I don't see how you can think a FB group opens up more opportunity to spread hate than any other on line medium such as Bigfooty. Just like on Bigfooty and other moderated sites, FB users can report material that they believe to be offensive and FB administrators will determine if content needs to be removed. As another poster has already stated, some of the offensive comments have been removed.

You've posted on the SRP board on this site so you know how extreme some BF users attitudes towards women, minority groups or those with religious beleifs etc can be. Do you think a lot of the posters with the extreme opinions on the SRP board would be gutsy enough to say what they say there, if it was their real name and photo attached to their comments (as is the case with Facebook - in most instances)? Or do you think their bravery is assisted by a made up username and an avatar?

Jeemak, I agree that online anonymity makes it easier for people to express extreme views.I was having this debate with an american guy on a plane of all places some last year. My view is that people should behave online as they do in real life, wheras he said that an online existence gave people a freedom to say whatever they want without consequences and so anything goes. I disagreed with this.

I don't see what online anonymity has got to do with this girl though. The purpose of Big Footy is to discuss football, the purpose on other forums is to discuss other parts of sport or life. But as I see it, the purpose of the facebook group is to do nothing but pour scorn over one individual. Okay she did the wrong thing, but isn't setting up a facebook for the sole purpose of having a go at her, taking things too far? I guess in answer to your question it is the specific targetting of one individual and possible consequences which I am uncomfortable with.

It just sort of dissappoints me that there are people in society with nastiness in them and would devote time and energy in having a go at a person they don't know. It strikes me as not a nice thing to do. But maybe my antenna on this one is way out of beam and I am the abnormal one and living in fairy land.

I don't have access to FB at work, but having just seen the group and some of the posts I can see what you mean, to a point.

I don't think it is worth having a FB group for this woman, but I don't join any group/cause requests when they come around anyway. She'll disappear into obscurity soon enough, and the masses will have something else to be completely disgusted by, another FB group will be created, and so on and so fourth.......

Statement from the Lions just came thru to work ...

Club statement on beer throwing incident
The Brisbane Lions advise that the female patron who threw beer at Western Bulldogs Captain Brad Johnson has telephoned both the Lions and Bulldogs football clubs on her own volition this morning to unreservedly apologise for her actions last Saturday night.
The extremely remorseful Sydney-sider, who holds a Victorian-based Lions Membership with AFL entry rights, has expressed her deep regret and embarrassment to the Club for her behaviour.
She has also:
-
given the Lions a firm undertaking never to repeat her behaviour at any future AFL matches;
- promised to send Bulldogs skipper Brad Johnson a full apology letter;
- offered to make a donation to a charity organisation of the Bulldogs' choice; and
- agreed to accept whatever sanctions are handed down by the Lions in consultation with the AFL regarding her membership.

Brisbane Lions Chairman Tony Kelly and Chief Executive Michael Bowers have also written to the Western Bulldogs and Brad Johnson expressing their apology for the incident happening at the Lions' home ground on behalf of Club members and fans.
"We have spoken to the member in question and she is honestly mortified and extremely remorseful for what she has done," Lions Chief Executive Michael Bowers said.
"It seems that it was a 'spur of the moment' error in judgement that she really wants to put right today - especially with her full apology to Brad Johnson and the Bulldogs, and her offer of a donation."
"Saturday's behaviour was totally unacceptable at all Lions AFL matches and is not within any of the trademarks that our Club and its members stand for with the courtesy that we show our opposition."
"Let this be a strong reminder to all patrons attending Lions Gabba matches that we have zero tolerance for any objects being thrown onto the field at players - whether it is dangerous or not. We are a family friendly venue and a respectful Club and we refuse to let that reputation be compromised."

I thought the woman's behaviour was unnacceptable.

However, I have refused to join that facebook group despite being invited to do so. It takes it way too far. People should put the issue in perspective. I'm sure Johnno doesn't care that much anymore. After all it is only a beer. Lowering oneself to her level is a bad idea, and some of those who have commented in that group have done just that.

More perspective, a Tiggers supporter spits at the Tiggers coach as he's leaving the ground, no proof that he even hits the coach, written and electronic press go crazy, police called in, supporter fined and banned for a number of years...........rules for some clubs but different rules for others.

I thought her and Brisbane handled it well. She has apologised to both clubs, she has given an undertaking it will never happen again, she will write a written apology to Brad Johnson and donate money to the charity of the Bulldogs choice. I think all that and the resulting adverse publicity is enough punishment for her.

She has obviously stuffed up and it looks terrible and cheap and low class behaviour but IMO her apologies and all of the above things she will undertake, should be enough to end the matter without any further action needed.

It's an indictment on today's society that you aren't comfortable with your reaction. Unfortunately it seems that to take a stand on moral grounds is hopelessly out of date and contemptible, a sign of weakness. No, your antenna is spot on, stick to it and stand up for your beliefs and instincts at all times. The Facebook mentality must not be allowed to dictate what's right and wrong.

I'm not happy with Sween 54's post either, although he'll probably say it's a "joke". Nevertheless it's an attitude that doesn't need posting on this board.

To say it's "bullying" is stupid. What do you call her throwing beer on Johnno, then? The site isn't an attack on her, if you actually look at the title and discussion boards. It's to pressure the authorities to MAKE sure they deal with her properly. FYI, the group did get into the media, as intended, and has had an effect on what has happened; I'm sure of it.
The world isn't filled with crazy axe murderers as you may think. People have a right to voice their opinions, and as of now, 672 people, and still counting, are wanting to voice their opinions about this issue. So some of them are obviously emotionally involved with this and use swearing as a means of expression, they're pissed off about it, and that's totally acceptable. What she did was un-Australian, in all sense of the meaning.

Okay "Lol at lame mods". You have your opinion and mine is totally the opposite so agree to disagree on it. We have a completely different sense of perpsective and what is right or what is fair.

Anyway she has made an olive branch to Brad and the club and has agreed to a whole range of steps to make up for her bad behaviour including donating to the cause of the clubs choice. If Brad accepts the apology then that is all that matters and should close the issue. I can't see the purpose of the facebook group/s continuing after this point.

Seriously though, if this woman's well-being or any women were in danger, the group would have been closed. You have to recognise free-speech and that everyone has their own, and are entitled to opinions. Paranoia about crazy folk is just useless.

Your disagreeing to the group is the same as all the members disagreeing with her actions. It's a matter of personal view. You're hating on the group, and they're hating on that individual's behaviour. Same, same in my eyes. Fighting fire with fire cant be taken seriously.

Why is she giving to charity? How does it make up for what she has done?

Call me a cynic, but that to me is the easy out a lot of people take these days, after doing something wrong in view of the public.

I agree
If she wasn't caught on camera I bet she wouldn't have been so sorry.

To say it's "bullying" is stupid.

Bullying includes behaviors and actions that are verbal, physical and/or anti-social, such as exclusion, gossip and non-verbal body language.

Seriously you guys need to grow up!

No it wasn't acceptable for that girl to throw beer on Brad and she deserves whatever punishment the club brings. But you really think that abusing and swearing at someone is acceptable? Just because someone does something wrong doesn't mean you do something wrong back. She made a mistake, forgive and forget.

Just for the record, I don't condone the abuse that has been directed at this person.

However, I would prefer her to spend the money on getting some help to sort out why she behaved the way she did rather than give money away to a charity of somebody elses choice. I don't want to see her whipped in public or put in the stocks to be pelted with rotten fruit, but seriously, if you are that stupid to throw beer on a player (remember, this sort of thing hardly happens so she is well beyond normal for behaving like this) then you need to have your head checked.
