Yeah, that's one I forgot. Sorry my views may not be popular but would like some feedback

I'm not sure it's worth getting high on Hawthorn's work this period, they basically traded their two best midfielders and out of two drafts for someone who was the fourth best at his club and someone coming off two ACL injuries. Wait and see.

Also I dispute that Dodoro has failed with top 10 picks, unlucky with injury but all of them have been AFL standard, 50% of them elite. He built us to a finals side only for Dank and Hird to waste it.

I think it was pretty well known that sheedy used to have last day on who we drafted while he was still head coach. Ever since the retirement of sheeds, dodoro seems to have started nailing a lot more picks. Strike rate has been so good over the past 5 or so years

You make some fair points but dodo from 2001 till 2014 didn't build a list to challenge for a flag that's 13 years????

Like Scanlon said Sheedy dictated for a while. Then I think he built a side that would be challenging right now if not for the saga.

Also I think it takes ages to build a premiership side, 5 years from the day you draft someone before they become the player you envisioned. Then you probably need three years worth of players to execute your plan. That's eight years, most people don't even have a job long enough to see out the execution.

You can get lucky and draft some generational players like Bontempelli or Franklin that can propel you but to build for a sustained period of success is a slow process all about constant improvement and setting standards.

Speedy coached and win flags in 3 different decades, but check who his list manager was for those flags. Not dodo.

Times have changed though, the game has reached a level of professionalism and tactics Sheedy never really experienced and he started to struggle at even a standard below. Partially why we've gone through a decade of mediocreness was an inability and lack of desire to do the long rebuild. Too much hubris from old heads with unrealistic expectations.

Wish list
#1. McGrath
#20. Berry/Simpkin/Battle
#29. Clarke/Drew
#41. ???

Any suggestions for our pick 41 if we use it?
Zac Fisher or Brandan Parfitt, a couple of genuinely good footballers who are small but play with a lot of energy.

Kym LeBois if we want a quick, agile and skilled crumbing forward. Also a relative of the Davey's.

Yep. But McGrath's stocks also improved quite a bit since then (at least in the mind of a lot of the public), to be fair.
True, if we wanted McCluggage though for mine we'd seen all we'd needed to see. And who know's maybe the reason we got Stewart with such a late pick (Pick 77 is worth bugger all to GWS, has no points value) was maybe due to a handshake agreement that we'd let them take McGrath at Pick 2 or at least agree not to bid on Setterfield. On face value I dunno if that'd be deemed draft manipulation but surely it happens all the time?

Yeah, quite possibly. But who knows?

Like you, I can't really think of anything much more now that would be needed to make their decision.

They surely would have interviewed both of them fairly intensively at Etihad a couple of weeks ago as well.

I'm going through my next Phantom Draft and at the moment I have Clarke, Drew and Hayward still around at 29 it's a tough one to pick from
when you look at the draft now, it's a tough prediction on who takes who.
There are a lot of Non vic picks in the top 20 and I imagine some nervous clubs wondering about go home factors

If we take McGrath at 1, what are the next 9 picks in your view?

Yeah as far as the top guys go I reckon he'd have seen all he'd needed to see before the combine even started, would've given him a better insight into who he likes in the 2nd round and beyond though.

Larkey doesn't get enough love.

Seems like this year more than others in recent memory, people have focused heavily on performance rather than transferable AFL attributes.

He has clean disposal, good mobility and can clunk. The key defender trifecta.

Reckon Richmond should go for him with their 27.
