Only thing I can think of is that they needed the picks for the trade with Essendon but then the trade fell over and we were stuck with the picks
The pick trades were completed after the Essendon trade fell over. They make absolutely no sense now.

I thought we were looking for a late pick to match our academy player from Bendigo but we didn't end up picking her up.

I mean I don’t think that’s true at all. They were still in discussions with Essendon on the final day of trading

Yassir’s name hadn’t even come up until the second last day

Thoughts on 2025 team if all fit

B: Seymour Miller
HB: Lynch Hicks Graham
C: Dempsey McKenzie Shevlin
HF: Scott Brennan Dallaway
F: Yassir Grieser
Foll: McKinnon Grieves Conti
Int: Kelly Egan Ford Beruldsen Lavey
Emg: Hosking Bacon Hargreaves
Looks a good fit for our RD 1 team, Grieves will play from the get go. No defender on the bench but Shevlin - Lavey can rotate, and an extra forward in Beruldsen but who knows what line Ferg will want Beruldsen to play on.

That should be a pretty comp side more so if sierra can really play from the get go , I reckon Scott will be an asset for us , adds some much needed contrast to what we have in f50

Sorry I checked and you’re right

Well I can’t make heads or tails of it. They make very little sense
The only sense I can make of it is that clubs are allowed to pass on two picks that can be used on the SSP.

The following day after this trade we delisted Stella Reid so must have always had the plan to pass on a pick and use this to add a player through the SSP. If it's just the one list spot from Stella's delisting then we use pick 45, and this trade doesn't happen. I think this trade was insurance to get in picks 56 & 59 that we were never going to the draft with, but could use both on SSP if needed.

Reid and James were delisted just before the draft. Can’t remember if it was on the same day or Friday the week before

My biggest disappointment was the low numbers from the EDFL. Kyla Forbes from aberfeldie is it.

Heap of girls from Bendigo must be something in the water up there
EDFL is the feeder for Western jets and Calder Cannons
WJ hasn’t won alotve games and Cannons have been consistently smashed by most other teams last two years.
Also EDFL
U/16 div1 girls this season 8 teams 10 games and the grand finalists had an av winning margin of about 8 goals against the others.
One of em had 7 games outve the 10 H/A were the oppo didn’t score.

It isn’t a large talent pool, 30 of the 58 draftees outve Vic.
Think there’s 35 (?) leagues across Vic M/Vic C.
7 in Metro.

Pretty clear now that, as the quality of draftees improves year after year, there are very few opportunities for recycled players. Especially difficult with squads of 30.

Only 2 drafted this year.

Paige Scott was a unique case choosing to go to the draft and getting picked up with pick 31.
Alana Gee pick 57 Gold Coast to St Kilda.

I think even for train on positions clubs will lean towards new faces thinking young players who just miss out on being drafted have a better upside than those who have been through the system already.

Yea it’s a pity about the results. Cannons are loaded with EDFL players.

I do note that some of the girls just stop training and doing the extra (weight training, skills and running) it’s less like pulling teeth with some of them.

And the boys.. we have put on a kicking coach because 40% of our u12 boys cannot kick.

No interest for our five delisted players on Monday night either.

Agree that considering that there were some girls on Monday night who were so devastated they were brought to tears who had been hyped about their chances, recycled players getting an invite to train, their chances are slim.

Big year coming up for the likes of Cox, Ryan and Wicksteed.

Just a thought seeing the subject of jumper numbers is a hot topic of late, we now have 3 early ones available in 2,5 & 8.

Do we give our No. 2 to Sierra Grieves? ;)

Reckon one of the more established players will nab 2 or we mothball it and Sierra will most likely get a higher number. With Molan being the exception with number 1 as our first ever draftee, that's the way we've pretty much played it ever since.

Agree the torch will be on those names you listed in 2025.

Add Knoll to it. Won't need to be a star coming off a knee but will have to show some value. A list spot beyond 2025 is there for her if she wants it badly enough but at 24, recruited in 2023 (missing season 2023 and 2024) and with a hungry crop of prospective draftees snapping at her heels, time is her enemy.

Pretty evident how much more richly talented this crop was than any other I’ve seen, you’d think the depth of talent will improve with the volume of numbers seen participating at local level . I really hope that centra is a dead set star , being at a big club it will do the game no end of good as she forges a name for herself which im dead certain she will

Junior footy certainly appears to come easy to Centra. Looks a bit one paced but she moves so well that its doesn't seem to be a big issue for her. Lots of magnificent players in the AFL who aren't quick.

Biggest issue for her will be expecting to be fed by Sabrina Frederick at stoppages. Good luck with that Ash.

I haven’t read everything in the AFLW area but I was quite surprised when S Fredrick’s moved to the pies. I never really heard/read much about it? Anyone tell me anything?

BEEFING up its power and inside midfield, Richmond added some serious talent to its young brigade with two first round picks, before drafting the player it failed to secure during the AFLW Trade Period, with the selection it likely offered up to begin with anyway.

One of the most accomplished players in terms of accolades this year, Western Jets onballer Sierra Grieves had a season to remember. Not only winning the Jets best and fairest and dominating the league with ridiculous stat-stuffing performances, but Grieves stepped up to Vic Metro level and won the MVP there – as well as the overall MVP for the national championships – in an ultra-impressive carnival.

Likewise, Zoe Hargreaves also showed her potential during the national championships, teaming up with Grieves through the midfield against Vic Country at Marvel Stadium in what was her most impressive game of that carnival. She has also spent time forward and down back, though she is naturally a tall, powerful inside midfielder, not too dissimilar to her new teammate, Ellie McKenzie.

Selecting ex-Bomber Paige Scott was well known coming into the night, with the Tigers and Essendon unable to secure a deal for the former GWV Rebels forward. That turned out not to both Richmond, with the new Tiger selected at Pick 31, the yellow and black’s last pick they took in the AFLW Draft. However Richmond did leave the door ajar by passing with its last selection.

In terms of 2025, all three could step straight into the best 21 fitness providing, with Scott having long been a feature for the Bombers and already so experienced at AFLW level. Grieves is as readymade as any player and one of – if not the – safest picks in the AFLW Draft. She has a long-term future at the level and will work as hard as anyone to make it. Likewise Hargreaves is a player who should be able to crack into the team early, and can play on any line which helps as well.
