If Butters requests a trade this off season. PAFC would be absolute Idiots to deny him, a strategy like that is only ever effective if the reason for the move is because of an in-house problem that can be rectified.

If it is the state of their current list, Personal Reasons and/or the go home factor. You’re basically throwing away your leverage to be prideful(It’s one of the deadly sins for a reason).

And then there is the sickly feeling that spreads through the supporters the following season. Knowing that this great player, no longer wants to play for your club. Every great goal tarnished slightly.

This is still all speculation of course, But The Footscray Football has had this exact problem multiple times now.

This is especially true in Port's case where they are resetting with a new coach in 2026.

Getting as many good kids in as possible makes more sense than forced retention of a well paid senior player who wants out and will only be there for one year.

This feels a bit ridiculous to say, but if we somehow got Butters in this year (and I'll believe it when I see it rather than chose to get excited about another prospect who probably ends up at Hawthorn) he would arguably be the best player we have ever recruited in from another club based on profile/proven ability + current age across the club's history.

We've had some very good recruits (Treloar, Hudson) and I'm sure there were some other strong recruits in earlier decades I'm not aware of, but I can't think of any players equivalent to Butters' 2xAAs, 2xB&F, AFLCA winner etc prior record to come in whilst still in their prime at the ripe age of 25. Am I missing anyone obvious? Based on that alone it almost seems fanciful.

Adrian "Gags" Gallagher crossed over from Carlton in 1973 at the age of 26. A B&F winner and 3 time premiership player, he was named rover in the Blues' Team of the Century and would be the only one who would be close.

Jason Akermanis choosing us over other options possibly another vaguely similar one, when most clubs wanted him. Less to do with the expectation of on-field performance - though he did play well before being sacked by Brisbane the season before - but more to do with reputation and profile as the former Brownlow winner, 4x AA team member, and a high profile media figure, easy to forget now but he was everywhere on radio and newpaper when it still mattered. I wouldn't say best player but in terms of profile, up there.

Wonder if there's any possibility of getting both Rowell and Butters, or if we're just targeting both in case one player pulls out/injury/form/inability to get trade done impacts the trade. We may never know which of the two we prefer, or who of the two we would be willing to pay and trade more for, but logic suggests at least one of the two will stay or go to another club.

Currently Butters is averaging more possessions against us than any other opponent.

Has polled most Brownlow votes against us (11) than any other opponent, in 8 games, even though he's played 9 games v Adelaide (for 5 votes), 10 v Geelong (for 7 votes) and 11 v Richmond (for 6 votes).

Playing for us will ruin his stats!

Edit: has polled 3 votes against us in the last 3 games, both games in 2023 and last year, plus the only 2 votes he polled in 2020 were against us.

Also, he's worn #18 and #9 at Poort. Doubt he gets either of those. Maybe he'll go for a 50+ number? Or Lin Jong's 46?!
