was talking to a mate about how funny tim watson was when he was the coach of the saints

does anyone have any footage they can post up?

i remember something about "footy takes you to dark places" and eating peanuts, but ive never seen the footage since

much appreciated

So was Tim Watson really that bad as a coach? If so, what made him so bad? Was he any worse than a whole lot of other 1st/2nd year coaches?

The Saints were a basket case back then, on and off the field. Look how they treated Blight. Watson was no worse and certainly on a par with most first year coaches. There were a lot of senior players at that time that had far too much influence into board level decisions. That makes it dificult for any new coach to lay down the law and expect it to be followed.

I preferred him as the host of the Saturday Replay when he proclaimed, "And after the game, Demon coach............" and then he just stared at the camera having gone completely blank and after what seemed to be an eternity they went to a commercial. Then when he came back on, he apologised to Greg Hutchison for forgetting his name before calling him Glen.
When he was coaching I remember Patrick Smith getting into him on Sport927 one morning until finally Tim asked in a heartfelt voice, "Have I done something to you Patrick?"
One of his best calls was after the Saints had copped a caning. The journo asked, "Any injuries Tim?" to which he replied with a grimace, "I wouldn't have thought so."

Watson won five in a row early on to have the Saints at 7-3, but soon after came the monumental Waverley defeat after leading by more than 10 goals. All downhill from there...

That whole game's on YouTube, maybe you can catch some glimpses of Timmy's handiwork.

watson inherited a good team and dragged it down.

thought tony francis was a better rover than robert harvey...

had a lot of stupid ideas...

Had such brilliant ideas as playing Rob Harvey in a back pocket. After two brownlow medal winning seasons......

Damien Monkhorst, Tony Delaney and Tony Francis...he considered those guys as best 22 players. All dumped by their previous clubs.

He dragged a top four side to a spoon in a couple of seasons.

Yep was never the same after that loss.

Seemed to lose all faith in his own ability to do the job, and I think a few players and committeemen might have as well.

Another one of his pearlers was when he said the players 'had heads like boarding house puddings' after one particular loss. Still laugh out loud when I remember that one.

If he was coaching melb they would have rewarded him with a coaching extension.....

timmy was our burden.

At least 2000 got you Riewoldt and Koschitzke.

I like Tim but he slaughtered that list. A year after playing in a GF the team was on a fast track to the bottom of the ladder.

I remember a game at the MCG

The opposition had kicked 4 goals in a row, so he sent 18 players into the back half.

We kicked the ball out of defensive 50, they kicked it back in and do on an so forth, wouldn't have been so bad if we were winning.

I've still got that footage on DVD - hilarious! Pretty sure it was on the night after we knocked Carlton out of the '97 finals by 2 points at PP.
