On another note, proud dad of a two day year old daughter. Baby and mum doing fine, the usual emotional rollercoaster going on after birth

They grow up so fast!

Congrats.

How well do you think they actually implement this?

I can't see this ending well.

So because something will be difficult to implement they shouldn't try?

I think it's great it's passed the Senate as it shows how seriously they're taking it. There's endless possibilities for how it could be implemented, and some of them would be pretty difficult, but it's good they're trying.

If it's the Australian government we're talking about then no, they shouldn't. The millions of dollars they'll blow trying to implement this will be absurd. They really aren't capable of doing it effectively.

Not to mention, kids aren't idiots. Ban social media, they can still text each other etc. They'll find easy ways around this as kids always have done.

They're expecting social media companies to implement the restrictions and will fine them if they are found to be in breach. Where's the millions they'll waste?

Texting each other isn't the issue though? Do you think the ban is about communication..?

Do you not think bullying can occur via text?

Sure - why do the social media companies have to play ball? What's to stop them telling the Australian government to **** off? Show me a government program/initiative that hasn't ballooned above budget - they're ****ing useless across the board. I've got family that have worked in various departments, the sheer wastage that occurs is absolutely criminal.

What counts as social media? What about PSN, Xbox live etc? Whataspp/Telegram? For me, the crap that comes out on youtube is more of an issue. I havea six year old coming out with all kinds of nonsense. Somehow he knows all about Stalin and the USSR which must have come from youtube. So i've allowed youtube kids only now.

I agree that kids shouldn't be on social media and don't mind the law but the best way to do it is to educate parents about it.

I see plenty of kids at primary school that had phones. I have only just given my 13 yo son in Year 8 his first phone. I'm not letting the other 2 get a phone until they are in year 8 as well.

Are you saying we need Musk running our DOGE :D:D

I think you're somewhat missing the point. Bullying can happen in person too, they aren't banning social interactions..

They have to play ball if they want their apps accessible in Australia. You think if social media companies wanted to have illicit material on their websites they could just tell governments to **** off?

I thought Youtube/Twitter/TikTok/Instagram were the main focusses for exactly that reason. Things like Whatsapp/Messenger are fine (although may be included in the Bill, I haven't examined it that closely).

I bet the only thing that changes is in the terms & conditions of those apps you will have to tick a box saying you are at least 16 years old.

There'll be some form of ID verification but I'd like to think it would be hosted by a third party not directly by these sites. But then again, gambling companies need you to prove your age so maybe it would just be through the SM companies.

Not all kids who are 16 will have an ID. I guess L plate license would suffice but if a 16 yo does not have his/her L-Plate license what is going to be used for ID verification? Bit much to expect certified copies of birth certificates etc.

Don't think Messenger will survive - don't you need a Facebook account to have Messenger?

I agree with it in theory, I just don't at all trust the government to get this right.

How hard is it to use a VPN nowadays? There are so many ways to get around this.
