Analysis The go home factor, equalisation, draftees requesting trades

Maybe father/son should be eradicated. There's no real logic behind this relic of the past

It's purely a romantic thing
Seems like that now but your 100 gamers are just starting to get old enough that their kids might be draft age in the near future.

It’s a lot more of a romantic thing when they wear the same jumper as their dad, look like a clone and win a Brownlow or a Premiership in it, rather than 250 games in a different jumper in the WAFL.

Also if you go back in history a bit there were kids who got zoned to a different club than their dad which is why it was brought in coz they’d immediately seek a trade otherwise.

Jeezuz. Years of this (wave of Vic kids going back to Vic) = crickets, then a couple of young S.A. boys and a W.A. guy wanna come home and the drama starts.

This league is a corrupt joke.

pretty much. Cerra heads home, Lachie Neale takes off…shit even Logue, Tucker, Langdon, Weller…

theres three first rounders, two seconds and a pick in the 50’s who then wins a Brownlow…

Thats not even mentioning the three WA blokes who came back and are then running away again…

All the hoo-ha has been about Rankine and now JHF. Nothing has really been said in the media re Bruhn or Henry ( at least he isn’t getting a game). The hypocrisy is staggering

Great to see these SA boys head home early in their careers - and Jackson - hopefully clubs will think twice about using a high pick on Adelaide boys

And no one cared when the tidal wave of high draft pick Vics started to come home from GCS and GWS and still do with Taranto a former pick 2.

Feel for North but hey that's the way it's been going for a long time.

What about henry ? Probably lives closer to his mum than the mcg and still pulls home sickness.

What about perking and bailey Smith threatening non Victorian teams In pre draft interviews that they will leave if they are taken.

Yes they do have problems when their biggest equalisation tool is being manipulated

Sheezel has joined the club threatening non Vic clubs telling them that he will run home ASAP

It's really not that different from non f/s out of towners seeking a trade

Yeah nah it’s not 1910 and this isn’t the coal mines.
No it’s professional sport. 99% of us could only dream of doing for a living.
The nba, nfl, mbl and nhl do it. Aren’t we trying to mimic American sports?

afl needs to stop this players nominating clubs crap, they need to be nominating states, then let their club nut out the best deal

in the 80s we had carlton and hawthorn winning flags then signing bradley kernahan dorotich and platten, while the saints signed john favier, now we have pick 7,dunkley,jackson,grundy,toranto & hopper all going to top 8 sides

jhf decision almost a breath of fresh air

equalisation my ass, more like de ja vu all over again

the rich & good luck to them if they just do things better, have just found another way to get richer, while for the rest its the scraps & enjoy that odd season where you scrape into the 8

Simple way to fix it is don’t give players a say, they can be traded anywhere. If they don’t like it don’t play. Get a real job

It's the only way to fix it.

Give the players a 50% pay rise in the next EBA.

But go full NBA/MLB/NFL and hand the power back to the clubs.

I don't agree with the quotes or journos saying the draft is broken, I would make the following adjustments -

1. Adjust the first contract of first round draft picks for 3 years (to at least give clubs a bit more insurance as in the case of GWS with Boyd and now North with GWS)

2. If a player still under contract wants to return to another state, make it conditional they cannot nominate one specific club only, state only and in this instance the club who offers the leaving player's club the best and fair offer trade wise gets him (this doesn't apply to out of contract players)

Under my proposal, this gives smaller/struggling clubs and the likes of The Suns and GWS at least a bit more of a fighting chance to get better returns on their high investments.

How do you compensate 1st round picks who cant renegotiate contracts in year 3 when every other draftee can?

You would need to increase their locked in salaries by a fair amount.

Yep 1000%.

Two Vic boys running home to mummy. 10 clubs in Vic but they only nominate 1.

Media reaction...........zip.

It happens, but more often it doesn't happen.

We don't need to solve every situation with a new rule.

If anything, extend the draft contract to 3 years and see how that goes, but that doesn't stop players requesting to leave, the drafting club still has to hold them to their contract for it to actually be effective.

A South Australian that left for Queensland and a home grown Western Australian leaving for Victoria kind of contradicts the argument.

The issues are that player just want to go home. No matter whether they go home to Sa Wa Qld or Vic.

Okay. So how does any sport deal with this? In the US college draft system this would be as big a problem, as I'm sure it would in other global sporting leagues.

I dont think you can "solve" for a certain % of the population wanting to go home and not being able to live away from home. Many players can do it successfully, some can't.

That's life, move on.

Not to mention 2 Top 10 picks both want to leave one club and both go to the same club - No Problemo.

One guy want to go back to SA <heads exploding>
Two players who have given years of service and one of which is being pushed out is not the same as a first year player and number 1 pick… that’s why the reaction is different

When the contracts are even half of what the American contracts are I’ll come around to this idea, currently it is not even close to realistic.

I can’t speak for the others but the NHL sure as shit don’t do it.

Edit: turns out the NHL do have that, but players are now putting no trade clauses into contracts.

And no I have no desire to mimic America. We don’t have the right to just send people across the country like that for entertainment for fifteen years. National draft at 18, sure, otherwise no.

Offer any player in the AFL 272 million dollars over 5 years and I reckon they'd probably pack their bags and head to whatever club offers it the same day.

There’s also something a little bit unintentionally sexist about it, too. Hello, we’re trading you to Boston. Oh, your wife has a job here and enjoys it? That’s too bad

We were discussing this at work the other day and came up with the following:

All rookie contracts are three years long with first round draft picks having a club option of a fourth year

If a player is contracted and wants to move they can nominate the State they want to go to but not the team so their existing club can get the best deal for them that they can.

If a player is OOC they can nominate a club of their choice

All clubs get to nominate one OOC player per season as a franchise player and must pay them the average of top 5 players at their position for one year and then player becomes a UFA. A club that is in contention gets player for another year, player gets well compensated for that year and gets to move if they wish to whatever club they wish if so inclined without impediment
