Seems like that now but your 100 gamers are just starting to get old enough that their kids might be draft age in the near future.Maybe father/son should be eradicated. There's no real logic behind this relic of the past
It's purely a romantic thing
Jeezuz. Years of this (wave of Vic kids going back to Vic) = crickets, then a couple of young S.A. boys and a W.A. guy wanna come home and the drama starts.
This league is a corrupt joke.
All the hoo-ha has been about Rankine and now JHF. Nothing has really been said in the media re Bruhn or Henry ( at least he isn’t getting a game). The hypocrisy is staggering
Great to see these SA boys head home early in their careers - and Jackson - hopefully clubs will think twice about using a high pick on Adelaide boys

What about henry ? Probably lives closer to his mum than the mcg and still pulls home sickness.
What about perking and bailey Smith threatening non Victorian teams In pre draft interviews that they will leave if they are taken.
Yes they do have problems when their biggest equalisation tool is being manipulated

It’s a lot more of a romantic thing when they wear the same jumper as their dad, look like a clone and win a Brownlow or a Premiership in it, rather than 250 games in a different jumper in the WAFL.
Also if you go back in history a bit there were kids who got zoned to a different club than their dad which is why it was brought in coz they’d immediately seek a trade otherwise.
Yeah nah it’s not 1910 and this isn’t the coal mines.Simple way to fix it is don’t give players a say, they can be traded anywhere. If they don’t like it don’t play. Get a real job

I don't agree with the quotes or journos saying the draft is broken, I would make the following adjustments -
1. Adjust the first contract of first round draft picks for 3 years (to at least give clubs a bit more insurance as in the case of GWS with Boyd and now North with GWS)
2. If a player still under contract wants to return to another state, make it conditional they cannot nominate one specific club only, state only and in this instance the club who offers the leaving player's club the best and fair offer trade wise gets him (this doesn't apply to out of contract players)
Under my proposal, this gives smaller/struggling clubs and the likes of The Suns and GWS at least a bit more of a fighting chance to get better returns on their high investments.

The afl has a huge problem with their draft system now
pretty much. Cerra heads home, Lachie Neale takes off…s**t even Logue, Tucker, Langdon, Weller…
theres three first rounders, two seconds and a pick in the 50’s who then wins a Brownlow…
Thats not even mentioning the three WA blokes who came back and are then running away again…
The issues are that player just want to go home. No matter whether they go home to Sa Wa Qld or Vic.It happens, but more often it doesn't happen.
We don't need to solve every situation with a new rule.
If anything, extend the draft contract to 3 years and see how that goes, but that doesn't stop players requesting to leave, the drafting club still has to hold them to their contract for it to actually be effective.
Okay. So how does any sport deal with this? In the US college draft system this would be as big a problem, as I'm sure it would in other global sporting leagues. The issues are that player just want to go home. No matter whether they go home to Sa Wa Qld or Vic.
Two players who have given years of service and one of which is being pushed out is not the same as a first year player and number 1 pick… that’s why the reaction is differentNot to mention 2 Top 10 picks both want to leave one club and both go to the same club - No Problemo.
One guy want to go back to SA <heads exploding>
When the contracts are even half of what the American contracts are I’ll come around to this idea, currently it is not even close to realistic. No it’s professional sport. 99% of us could only dream of doing for a living.
The nba, nfl, mbl and nhl do it. Aren’t we trying to mimic American sports?
I can’t speak for the others but the NHL sure as shit don’t do it.No it’s professional sport. 99% of us could only dream of doing for a living.

Offer any player in the AFL 272 million dollars over 5 years and I reckon they'd probably pack their bags and head to whatever club offers it the same day.No it’s professional sport. 99% of us could only dream of doing for a living.

There’s also something a little bit unintentionally sexist about it, too. Hello, we’re trading you to Boston. Oh, your wife has a job here and enjoys it? That’s too badOffer any player in the AFL 272 million dollars over 5 years and I reckon they'd probably pack their bags and head to whatever club offers it the same day.
