Did they really? Was it just a 5 second mention or did they actually talk about the fight? I've seen features on Sot and Te Huna but I've yet to seen it featured on FSN in any significant way.

On K1, Overeem got pretty lucky. Saki was a mess and was still tooling him at the start. Man is that guy fast. But the last thing you want to do when facing Overeem is be hurt, because he can take you out in a second. Impressive night from Aerts, I thought he was done years ago.
 
Yeah, I'd agree that the Reem was a bit fortunate in the way the draw panned out but hey, shit happens in a one-night tournament. He already comfortably defeated Aerts last year in the Final 16 event. Him taking on a healthy Saki would have been interesting to watch though.

Have to say I'm more looking forward to the final WEC card in a few days than anything else taking place this month. Benson vs Pettis should be a great fight and the winner is fighting for the UFC LW title next. Before that fight, the 135 title fight between Cruz and Jorgensen should be really competitive. Cerrone and Horodecki is going to be a classic too. Add to that the fights with Palaszewski/Shalorus, Varner/Roller, Pickett/Menjivar and the Mongolian Wolf and it should be an excellent card. Two of those last four fights won't even be on the main card. I'm hoping to add some predictions in the next couple of days.

I caught it last night. It was a pretty short piece just mentioning the GSP vs Kos result with a few highlights shown.

I dont really know UFC down to a tee but watch a fair bit of it. Can someone just enlighten me as to what divisions there are, what weights these are and who are some of the best fighters in each division??

Heavyweight 265pounds - Cain Velasquez is champ, Brock Lesnar is former champ, Shane Carwin was interim champ and Frank Mir is a chump ;)

Light Heavyweight 205pounds - Maurico (Shogun) Rua is champ, Lyoto Machida, Quinton Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans are probably top 4 but watch out for Jon Bones Jones in the future

Middleweight 185pounds - Anderson Silva is the long time champ of this division. Before him was Rich Franklin but after losing a few times to Anderson has gone up to 205. Probably the weakest division in the UFC. Chael Sonnen is probably 2nd ranked.

Welterweight 170pounds - GSP (Georges St-Pierre) has held the belt at Welterweight for a while now. Other notable Welterweight is Matt Hughes who is a UFC hall of famer. Former lightweight champ BJ Penn sometimes fights at 170 (as he is at UFC 127 v Fitch)

Lightweight 155pounds - Frankie Edgar is champ after taking the belt off BJ Penn and defending it after BJ was given an immediate rematch. Gray Maynard, Kenny Florian and George Sotiropoulos are all up there.

Recently UFC has moved Featherweight (145pounds) to their cards, none have been fought in the UFC yet but current champ from WEC is Jose Aldo. Watch out for him, he's awesome.

They had Sot and Noke in the studio this morning. Was pretty decent but for some reason they were both really unwilling to give fight predictions. "There are so many variables that you can't say". Just throw them a bone would you fellas?
 
Final WEC card is on tomorrow. A number of these fights, particularly at 155, will almost certainly see the loser not make it into the UFC. RIP WEC :(

Lightweight Championship: Ben Henderson vs Anthony Pettis - tough to call, Henderson's rightly the favourite but Pettis has been on fire and ran over a quality wrestler in Roller, going for the upset here with a Pettis TKO
Bantamweight Championship: Dominick Cruz vs Scott Jorgensen - Cruz to be too quick for Jorgensen and take out a decision
Lightweight bout: Donald Cerrone vs Chris Horodecki - can't wait for this one, liking Cowboy to hurt Horodecki on the feet and use that to get a sub
Lightweight bout: Bart Palaszewski vs Kamal Shalorus - Shalorus's explosive but terrible punching style will clip Bart and put him away

Prelims
Lightweight bout: Tiequan Zhang vs Danny Downes - easy win for the Mongolian Wolf to send him into the UFC
Lightweight bout: Jamie Varner vs Shane Roller - Varner to stuff Roller's takedowns enough to land the KO
Bantamweight bout: Brad Pickett vs Ivan Menjivar - Pickett by decision
Bantamweight bout: Eddie Wineland vs Ken Stone - Wineland by TKO

Going with Castillo, Lamas and Barao (in a toss-up) in the remaining three prelims.

I'm at work following wec play by play on the mmajunkie iPhone app. Just saw a gif of the Pettis matrix kick on sherdog. MIND = BLOWN.

Can't wait to get home and download the fight. Apparently Bonnar lost his shit!
 
It's not every day you witness a truly unforgettable sporting moment. Pettis' wall kick is one of those moments.

What a way to launch yourself (literally) into the UFC.

Yeah I watched the event shortly after it aired, didn't know or hear about the kick, then literally yelled out laughed and cheered when seeing it. In my 13 years of watching MMA, that it probably the 2nd best highlight moment I've ever seen, with Ryo Chonans flying scissor heel hook only narrowly beating it. But because it was a championship fight, last fight in the WEC, last round of an even fight, it just made it so epic!

Bonnar's commentary was excellent also, not just for the kick, but for the whole event. His work lately has been excellent, he'd have to be in the top 2 or 3 commentators in the game at the moment. He should get a gig in the UFC after his fighting career ends.
 
Yeah, Bonnar's call was awesome. He took a while to settle in as a commentator but he was pretty good by this event.

I started watching this at about 5am on Saturday morning, operating on only a couple of hours of sleep after my work break-up and really struggling to stay awake for most of the fights. All that changed after the kick, suddenly I was buzzing and probably could have forgone sleep for the rest of the day. Not sure if Pettis can get by Maynard or Edgar but I'll be pulling for him.

Looks like it'll be a Cruz vs Faber rematch next, possibly as the TUF coaches too. Cruz's style is getting pretty frustrating to watch. He's really good but he never looks like he's going to put anybody in danger, it means he's not much more than a point fighter. The only real flaw he was mkaing in this fight was giving up his back so easily, Jorgensen took it a number of times but couldn't take advantage, I think Faber could choke him out if he gets the same position though.

Cowboy fight wasn't the war I was expecting but it was still pretty good, Cerrone's inventive and active work from the guard is always good to watch, even if it's low percentage at times like the neck crank he was working when he had Horodecki locked in an omaplata.

Hopefully the prelims are made available soon, sounds like there was some great fights among them.
 
The words 'mixed martial arts' were used just twice in that article. The guy is supposed to be a journalist, do some journalism work and find out what you're actually talking about.

I would encourage everyone to read through the comments section.

Anyone care to dispel some myths about the average MMA viewer? Personally, I received a scholarship to study in England, I have a business degree, am professionally employed, and love MMA. I also love poker, which is probably something else that a lot of people would turn their nose up at. I don't have any tattoos or piercings, and except for maybe 2-3 pots of beer a year, am a teetotaler.

I don't really see how comparing MMA to any other sport, such as boxing, AFL, NRL, soccer, etc puts MMA in a bad light.
 
I have heard that MMA actually appeals to people who normally don't like sports, or thats the reasoning for a major sports broadcaster not covering MMA.

As for reading the comments, I did for a bit but I almost feel like they are trolls they are so uninformed.

One comment regarding 80% of the crowd for a UFC event wouldn't want to go if there was facial recognition in effect made me scratch my head. Because we're all criminals or because we wouldn't want to be associated with the sport?


Personally I was worried going to UFC 110 that the crowd might be bogan heavy and I might feel like an outsider, but the exact opposite happened, the crowd was, I felt more intelligent that any sporting crowd I have witnessed.

As far as I am concerned people can get angry and hate on MMA/UFC all they want, as long as it doesn't stop me from watching it I am fine. You'd have to hope that the MMA community is smart enough to over time educate the public and make them realise that MMA is a far safer and better sport than they first anticipated.
 
I wouldn't be as concerned about so many negative attitudes if "cage-fighting" was legal in Victoria. Unfortunately with such an article and the accompanying comments, the UFC may never come to Melbourne :thumbsdown:

It'll come but our fastest and best hope is for the current Victorian government to need the money. The commercial benefits really are the biggest factor and George Sotiropolous becoming LW champ probably wouldn't hurt either.


The fact that The Age wrote another article on the UFC so quickly after the last ones is another positive sign, they realise there is a market for the UFC and are beginning to cater. The massive growth of MMA can only be ignored for so long before the business world realises its potential and forces government to play ball.

All in all, I think the more we go and spend our money on the UFC, the more power we give it.
(I plan on spending more at the merchandise stand this year and I spent over three times what I spent on last years tickets)

Oh and Merry Christmas!
