local footy has no chance when the local paper has a full page on sportsmen with the same name  how much would some of our struggling clubs benefit from a little publicity and maybe drop the name of their sponsor into an interview or a picture.:thumbsu: please lets get behind the local comps otherwise we will see more clubs go down the gurgler and more kids going to soccer.

Moogrot, I agree in principle to the bolded part, but when they being The Mercury employ people that are passionate about local football (not Soccer, Hockey, Netball or any other sport) and have arrogant morons who lack the knowledge of customer service and actually have interest in covering the stories instead of the usual predictable rubbish in Sunday's paper with 95% on the match of the day and 5% on other scores, then we might (and I say "might") be able to get back on the front foot.
And if your wondering who I'm having a dig at here, it's the Sports Editors, not the journalists. The Journalists are only working within the guidelines set by the control freaks!

Re: Tansperancy

I challenge all local journos all of whom I respect very much to get on the front foot, bring it out into the open and get the answers. (There in cohorts)

As a former member of the Tasmanian Media and a keen observer from afar these days, I can tell you the journos and AFL Tas are NOT 'in cohorts.'
True, it is difficult in a place like Tasmania to go as hard on various bodies, as you would in say Melbourne, but that doesn't stop them from asking the tough questions when required.
Some media outlets may be a little relaxed when it comes to doing so, but I can tell you the Mercury especially, have never worried about putting the powers that be at AFL Tas off-side.
The trouble is, you can ask as tougher questions as you like, but in some cases, Wade in particular, the answers are as rehearsed as a politician.

PS: I would like to see Andrew Mellor (current Mariners coach) appointed as senior coach of the Devils.
He is upfront and honest as well as a decent bloke.
Would be a nice change down there at AFL Tas HQ!!

WOO-HOO Wade finally admits it!!

Devils boss denies Cresswell resignation sign of poor leadership
AFL Tasmania's general manager, Scott Wade, denies the resignation of Devils coach Daryn Cresswell is a poor reflection on the organisation.
Cresswell resigned yesterday, becoming the second Devils coach in less than two years to walk away from the position.
Wade says he does not believe it is a sign of poor leadership.
"Since I've been at AFL Tasmania there has been no coach that has been sacked.
"So if that's poor leadership... people in employment resign all the time.
"If, when people resign from an organisation, if that's immediately tagged to be poor leadership, then perhaps I am a poor leader," he said.

Item in the Examiner today promoting a Film on Tasmanian Football that premiers at the State Cinema tonight made by Roar Promotions. It will be also be shown on SBS in 4 parts starting on August 27th. It highlights four footy communities - Queenstown, Beaconsfield, Woodsdale and King Island. It evidently focuses on their struggle to keep Footy alive in their area so hopefully Wade and Baker will be watching to get some pointers and see how the other half live.
Hey Duff just found this out - and to think they couldn't even hand out a few thousand for your footy show.

"Screen Tasmania is proud to have invested $112,500 into the making of Alive and Kicking and has been working hard to build and support the local screen industry.

Whisper is that Cresswell is having extra-marital affairs and has flown to england today. Perhaps to be with an english belle?

Watch this space.
Heard similar today actually.
A few of the details were different but pretty much along the same lines.
Allegedly he and wife parted company a short while back.
Would probably go someway to explaining why he just simply lost interest and quit the job I guess.

Ross kicked out of ODFA. Big write up in today's Mercury. Disappointing to hear but I think it was coming. I think they need to do what Lindisfarne did and tell certain people that their services are no longer required and hopefully come back next year.

Leaves a big gap between first/second (Swansea and Woodsdale) and third/fourth (Campania/Mt Pleasant)

It's front page of the Examiner this morning, and they've decided to suspend the ODFA roster while they redraw a 4 team roster for the remainder of the season. Ross intends to appeal the decision (not surprisingly). Also Steve Parcell (SUA president) said in the Examiner "I can't give you any more details than that because I'm not a member of the ODFA"

Well Steve, your association is used by the ODFA to umpire the games. Technically you are a member of the ODFA pal! Sorry, but that's logic at work again!

Oh dear? Why would they need to redraw the roster?? Wouldn't logic say that the team that had the bye orginally take Ross' place??
I forgot, that's far too logical!!!

I think that they would need to redraw it so that each club plays each other the same number of times, as I believe right now, the roster is half way through a cycle of matches.

I just read the Examiner's ODFA report which was pretty basic compared to the Mercury's report (for a change...). Atleast Helen is quoted on giving a reason in the Mercury.

http://www.news.com.au/mercury/story/0,22884,23819717-13222,00.html.

Also I don't believe that the SUA would have been voting in whether or not Ross would stay. They may have had a presence at the meeting but ultimately it was the club delegates vote (from what I understand - happy to be corrected here)

Yeah but the SUA would have had a say as their umpires would be used to umpire the matches and any "complaints" that the umpires would have they would pass back to the SUA and then to the ODFA (I would have thought). They might not be a actual member voting on correspondence of the ODFA, but they do have an influence.

Also all teams had played 8 roster games anyway up to now. Swansea were on 24, Woodsdale 20, Campania 4 and Mt Pleasant 4, so they could have easliy slotted the bye team into Ross' place. If they are re-drawing the roster, as suspected in reports, then you would say the points would be annuled and it would be treated like a new season.

Spot on there actually sportstalk07, each team has played 8 games and the competition is directly at the half way point. Swansea actually have 28 and Woodsdale 24 points.

This has happened twice in the association's history - and only quite recently. In 2000, Ross went into recession at Round 7 after a walkout of players, and a new roster was drawn up. A year later, Tunnack went into recess at Round 13, and the roster altered so that the team that was scheduled to have the bye to play the team that was scheduled to play Tunnack.

Seems the SUA may have held the competition to ransom based on this article - http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23820275-5006788,00.html.

Hope AFL Tas don't get too involved - stick to your coaching problems. According to Wayne Povey, Ross have until June 18 to appeal the decision. I somehow doubt the compeition will let them back in considering the next scheduled games are on June 14!!

Nice to see you think the saints will put up a challenge this week. From our 2 games against the hawks at Snug, we have beaten them once (by 45 in 2006 putting them out of the finals race) and lost by 5 goals last year. Could be a chance for the saints to really have a crack, and be in the game til the end...

I think the Australian are making the SUA look like the darlings there...
And I wouldn't think that Ross would be mucking around with lodging any appeal papers either. There is something on the ABC about it which will be coming up shortly.

That's exactly why I gave the Saints a chance against Ozguy's Hawks. The Hawks are out of sorts at the moment and the trip to Snug is a bit of a hoodoo for them (can't believe I'm saying it, but anyway!)
Hopefully I'll get all the previews done later tonight...

Given The Flood has annointed me as an expert I wish to advise that I disagree with the predictions and/or margins of the bolded games!

No way known Kermandie will beat Huonville, not even at Geeveston (You watch me get them over the line now!), Hawks aren't going as well as they would like but they'll beat Channel by alot more than 33 points and Sorell I would think will beat the Bunna by more than the 10 goals you've put down.

As for the other two games, quite likely the Lindisfarne winning margin will be greater than that too! One of my quality sources, an ex Lindisfarne Superstar no less, ran into Todd Willing during the week and was told by the big ruckman the Blues weren't real happy with their performance against Triabunna (only winning by about 10-12 goals) and intend to make amends against poor old Cygnet!

Menza, I've noticed Chooka Rainbird wasn't among the goals last week and isn't named this week. What's he done to himself?

As for Claremont travelling to Dodges, whilst not wanting to jinx the boys, all I'll say is their task will be alot harder than their 70 point win in Rd 1 was!

With the events of the last 4 hours, Barge Predictions Ltd. would like to retract all comments other than those about the Central Hawks and also that Claremont would have a big task to take the points at Shark Park!

Ahh good to see you eat humble pie on something anyway! :p

Summarising today's proceedings...
SFL Premier League Round 9 saw Clarence regain 2nd spot on the ladder with a comfortable 99 point win over Kingborough at Bellerive. North Hobart buried their KGV hoodoo and inflicted Glenorchy's 1st defeat of 2008 with a 38 point win. Lauderdale won their second game on the trot defeating a feeble Hobart also by 38, while New Norfolk got crucial percentage with a 155 point slaughter of Brighton at Pontville.

SFL Regional League Round 10 and Lindisfarne defeated Cygnet by 31 points at ANZAC Park, Kermandie accounted for a woefully inaccurate Huonville by 45 (Huonville kicked 7.20), Dodges with a 13 goal to 5 second half accounted for Claremont by 38, Central Hawks defeated Channel by 130 at Snug while Sorell had 13 more scoring shots against Triabunna, but somehow still lost by 7 points.

NTFL Round 11 and Burnie easliy defeated North L'ton by 42 at West (Arctic) Park, Latrobe produced an upset of sorts beating South L'ton by 12 at Youngtown, Ulverstone won a high scoring shootout against Smithton by 90 (Ulverstone 192-Smithton 102). Adam Derbyshire's haul of 18.2 led Launceston to a 170 point slaughter of Penguin, and 18 from Phil Crowden was the standout in Devonport's near on 200 point murder of Wynyard.

NTFA had no games today, but the rep game at Aurora Stadium between the NTFA Division Two and the NEFU saw the NTFA a bit too good in the end, accounting for the NEFU by 22 points (17.15-117 to 14.11-95)

Unrestricted drinking around the ground = trouble.

It's the only thing that spoils the Regional League.
