I know Australia is a free country, but jesus after doing a bit of travelling through Europe and even the US the last few years there's quite a few things here which would make tourists go wtf.

This is just adding to that IMO, it's up to the parents to monitor their kids social media usage, not the governments job to poke their noses into peoples households

Social media companies seem to handle their COPPA responsibilities for US accounts - what is the difference here?

Australia gets about 10 million tourists every year. Will they all have to provide their ID to be able to access social media while travelling here?

I worded that poorly, what I meant was people from other countries would shake their head at some of the babysitting laws we have here.

Most people overseas would probably be unaware of the new Australian regulations. But if they had to provide ID to access social media while travelling here it could be a WTF moment.

Most people overseas don’t have a clue or even care about what actually goes on in Australia, and are quite surprised when they’re told how little liberties Australians have.

And they'd shake their heads at some of the "freedoms", too.

You have to provide ID in the UK to access ‘adult’ sites, by default it’s blocked.

But that’s a sim only thing. But could easily be employed here on kids smartphones for identified sites.

Yeah I thought it was strange that the Government excluded gaming platforms from the bill. Ofcoarse they can be sketchy places for kids.

The legislation was never about protecting kids from predators. It is about influencing what information they hear.

Maybe so, I'm just pointing out the Government's inconsistencies in its spin.
Feel like the stipulation on social media companies not being able to demand digital ID or ID documents to verify age in addition to gaming platforms apparently being exempt despite technically meeting the age restricted social media criteria in the bill points to Labor already backpedalling to minimize backlash while locking down the think of the children vote.

Didn't stop Andrews locking down kids in their homes, did it?

Yeah Roblox has a very bad reputation for this.

Yep. The legislation is a vague blunt instrument that no social media outlet can actually comply so it's an open ended threat. The govt can selectively target any who allow information they don't agree.

This is so wrong I don't know where to start. What are the liberties that you crave that we can't indulge in?

I love to travel and have seen a lot of the world. At the same time it's great living in Australia. When I come home...

I can avoid cigarette smoke in most public places.
People don't shoot me or my family when we go out.
We can drink the tap water.
I can catch a taxi without the risk of being ripped off or dying in a car accident.
I don't tread in pi$$ and $hit when I walk down the street.
I see my mum who didn't die of COVID.
I can go to the doctor and buy medicine that actually does the job without declaring bankruptcy.

Big Government and sensible laws are the one thing keeping this place as the greatest nation on Earth.

If you want more liberties move to the USA. I hope you meet certain criteria though because unless you are in the top 5% by income or wealth and a white hetero person who doesn't need health services like an abortion or cancer treatment, I guarantee life will be better here.

Oppression in Australia:

Our taxi drivers are not even allowed to park outside airports and pull Uber drivers from their car to gang-bash them and burn their cars!

The world is laughing at us!

Or you could try some other examples:

People denied the right to go to funerals and visiting dying family members because there was one case of covid 400km away from where they live.

Australia locked up refugees for years simply for trying to move here. Some were locked up for a decade with no crime committed.

Australia imprisoning whistle blowers who leak information of war crimes

In some states child rape victims were recently banned from telling their story by law.

Abortion was banned in some states until very recently.

So, this is not the reason. Didn't read further, sorry.

I haven't got many details on what the Gov plans to do, but a blanket ban on underage use of things does have precedent (grog, angel dust, ciggies).

Does SM warrant such an approach? Prob not, but some action must be taken to reverse affects on youth IQ, cognitive capacity, life habits, mental and physical health. These are of significance for individuals, families, communities, the nation, short and longterm.

This is not a zero sum issue.
