Was there last night.... as plenty have said
What a difference Reid makes being dangerous deep allowing buddy to do his magic up the ground

I’d say your big three on ballers
Hannerbury Parker and Kennedy were
At their average or below which makes
The win more impressive IMO
(Geez Coniglio has become a gun )

Backline needs improving though
That’s three weeks in a row opponents
Have put up 85pts plus

I think you’ve nailed the issue, and it’s not that the backline is underperforming, it’s that they’re under a bit more pressure because our key mids have not quite hit their straps. Hanners is still getting match fitness and feel, and the others haven’t quite found touch yet. If it was round 20 I’d be worried, but they’re building. Well I hope they are anyway!

It’s a marathon.

Check out Horse's comments re George at his presser, he had a job and delivered.
These are some of the things you miss watching at TV - only when you realise George completely shut Whitfield out of the game.

I hope hanners can get back to his best at some point

Doesn’t look himself at all

He doesn't look near his best but I actually thought he was OK last night. Clean at a couple of crucial times and it looked to me like he was less in the guts last night. Also only his 2nd game back, so I thought he was alright.

3rd game back at a quick ground like Etihad could let him blow some cobwebs out.

Kieren Jack another up and down game. Some awful skill errors along with a couple of classy ones to set up goals. He's always been a high goal-assist player so he's still of some value, but it feels like he's slowly dropping down the pecking order week by week in terms of players who would get picked first. Not to say he isn't worth his spot in the side still, but by the end of the year it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't there anymore.

If he's maintained across HF, I'm still picking him. He and McVeigh are slowing down but they both still contribute.

Hanners didn't have the same preseason the other players did and he's still building back his fitness. I suspect it'll be another 2 rounds before we see him back to his best.

Also Hanners was an absolute marshal in the midfield. Pointing out a lot of players not in their spot and getting everyone into place. You could see him barking orders around the ruck, telling Josh to get his man

Defence is strange.

This not a criticism. Just an observation. It almost feels as if our attempts to improve our fwd pressure is coming at the expense of the backline.

I could be imagining things. But when the ball is forward of centre for us we're red hot getting numbers around contests. But if there's a quick transition over the back we open up in the back half allowing free play and deep entries to our opponents.

Many times GWS scythed through us with no Swans within 3-5m of an opponent allowing 3 or 4 consecutive uncontested possessions.

The other area that needs work is our kick ins. We switch into a fair amount of trouble currently. Classic example was when we isolated Lloyd 1 on 3 after switching and missing a short marking chance.

If we're going to concede more we need to score more in turn. Could mean our several years of elite score restriction on opponents could be fraying a bit.

Some adjustments may be required.

The difference between the opposition scoring 85 points and 60 points is mostly our brain fades in defence.

might be time to come to terms with hanners as just an average player. he's been below his best for too long now.

really like apply but he costs us with his stupidity and doesn't seem to cop it like jones does.

really liked haywards game. did some nice things in the midfield.

don't understand all the dropped chest marks.

Is it just me or has Hanners been down the last couple of seasons?

Felt like the difference between 2016 swans and 2017 swans was an out of form Hannerbury. Granted this years slow start for the last two games is due to a lack of pre-season.

Also Lance Franklin I just love him he is just excellent I feel like a lot of casual observers grade his game on how many goals he kicks but he dominated all night yesterday and got the reward in the last when he put the game away.

I remember thinking over the off-season that he will lose a step compared to his magnificent 2017 season but I think he has actually gained a step and got some confidence with his hands also.

Freak show. Absolute freak show. Best player I have ever seen

It isn't just you, though to be fair to him he did play most of 2017 with an injury and he was injured during preseason in 2018 so it might take a while to build up his fitness and match conditioning.

As for Buddy, yeah he does seem like he might become a pretty handy player for the Swans and so far there is no signs of aging.

Too early in Hanner's campaign to write him off. His season will be a slow burn rather than an explosion.

We have a few players in this position. Kizza, Hanners, Macca. We're just seeing glimpses from them at the moment.

It's interesting watching Cunningham working inside, tackling, and then assisting with the spread. He's moving so much more freely than Hanners. And this sort of work is usually Hanners' bread and butter. Hopefully he gets back to something like the output we've seen in the past.

The biggest positive out of the first three rounds combined (apart from going 2-1) is that we seem to have become much less reliant on high tackle numbers. Considering the way the game is adjudicated these days this is very beneficial. It'll also help us later on in the season.

Hewett has been in diabolical form. Taking a long time to do exactly the same pick up drove away from goal and a slow handpass to someone with nothing on. On form Newman should be in for him.

Tagged Whitfield - so did what was asked of him. Whitfield has been carving teams up but was held to half his disposal count for the year, and I didn't notice him tbh - so good job Hewett.

edit/ I see I'm the last in a long line to mention it. Was hard to pick up on the tellie. I assumed he was tagging someone from the stats, but didn't realise who until I read it.

Although Horse’s gameplay was negative, it delivered the goods. I’ve been sick of watching Shiel waltzing around the ground causing havoc and last night he was negated somewhat. Keeping him, Ward and Whitfield to below 23 touches was key. Someone must have been on Sheil - I couldn’t tell who it was. Parker for stints? It looked bloody sloppy but maybe we are glass half empty - our DE was 74%.

A very good win in the context of the season, but that said, we shouldn’t underestimate how not having Scully in the side damages their quick ball movement + Greene would have cantered in for a couple without doubt, given how out of form our backline is right now.

At the rate we are going, last year’s Richmond would tear us apart, but we have a tonne of improvement left in our legs. This season could be a cracker if we keep getting better and can keep Reid on the field.

Dean Cox coaching Sinclair is paying off
Gotta laugh. Last week the board was calling for him to be hung drawn and quartered.
This week he's on top of the mountain.
Great game though. He's always willing. The team clearly rate his effort. It'd be really interesting if we bring in Cameron for Reid and Sinkers gets some more time up forward...

One thing that always worries me is our play on at all costs gameplan. Its a high risk high reward style but when your skills are as deplorable as ours, the risk just gets greater. Couple that with our poor decision making amd it is a recipe for disaster in the finals.

Grundys hanball last night!WTF WAS THAT

Parker and jones always looking for the play on, when they have a mark or a free they always only take a one or two steps off the mark and it puts themselves under pressure.

Also while im at it in a negative post, kennedy really needs to learn how to kick. Every kick he does in every game (that isnt a long kick and hope) hits the deck. He tries to stab every ball and it travel 0.5 m above thr grass and lands at the feet of a target. We lose so many goal possibilites because of it. I dont know why he does it, must think hes nathan buckley or something.

I get that not everyone has great skills and thats fine, but a state level player should be able hit a leading target thats coming straight at them from 20-25m. You dont even need to hit them, just pop a drop punt a couple of m in front of them and let the forward run onto it. Its the easist kick to pull off and its the easiest mark for the forward. One player that surprisingly has very good skills is cunningham, he weights kicks perfectly, he has his flaws but i back his kicks in to jit their target

Hopefully Jack can capsure some consistent form

Don’t wanna see him in the 2s

It would be hard - the guy deserves to go out with a premiership - but we don't always get what we deserve.
I think if we are going to be a threat this is the year he and McV have to make way for some speed and daring. I think it will take injury for Horse to move either on though....but the club clearly drafted for it, just a matter of if they are ready to pull the trigger.

Was his tap work to advantage as we lost a lot of clearances for a period ? Still think his rucking isn't ever going to be beneficial but he had a good game around the ground which is what we need as he is an automatic in for the rucking as he is our best option so if we get good value for him around the ground it's a big plus like last night.

This is one thing that i never get about sinclair. No hes not a superstar, no hes not super talented and its unfair to expect those kind of performences from him but what you do get is intensity and effort. Not once have i ever heard anyone on here say sinclair has had a lazy game, same cant be said about buddy, parker, hanners , rampe, rohan , papley etc.

He will win some weeks, he will lose some weeks but he will fight to the death and thats all you can ask of someone of his capabilities. I for one are very happy with the way he has started the year
