He hasn't been himself since Buddy retired.
He hasn't been fit since Buddy retired. Injuries that don't want to go away. An op in the off season last year to clear detritus. Now he has a foot injury, bruising. Normally a bruised foot takes about 2 weeks, with all weight off the foot for the first week. This one I have had on several occasions. It is not major but painful when you out weight on the foot.

all the LTI guys can come back thorugh the 2's thx. Mills should have last year. Cleary should be next in, and Gus gets another crack. Still laughing at his complete whiff of the ground ball in front of goals, that shit has got to b embarassing lol. Really should walk this in but if we're 10% off and they're 10%on it could get interesting.

Betcha most of them don't, certainly Gulden won't.

It would be nice if you told us what you mean.

I assume you're referring to my pointed remarks about playing McDonald in seniors this week, which some want.

I gave my reasons. If someone wants to tell me why my concerns are unwarranted, despite our failed history of rushing players back and playing them underdone/injured, they can.
You said it was posters , anyhow i'll move on

Gus' form hasn't been great. He looks down on confidence and has been panicking a bit with ball in hand.

But this "he's slow" line is just plain wrong. He has a very decent burst of speed. And he beat 12 of the 18 competitors in the GF sprint.

I need to watch Gus more carefully, but the sense I got when he came on as sub was that his strides we too long, which caused him to lose agility. I don’t want to jinx him, but I thought Stephens had similar issues (good athlete but not quite there as a footballer).

Gus’ anticipation also looked off. I’d like to see him play more on his toes, and taking smaller quicker steps to get his acceleration up. That might also help him find that fraction of extra time and space to kick with composure.

Honestly, DQ. The GF sprint is usually performed by the players from each club who haven't gone overseas/injury rehab and who answered their phone. It doesn't represent the fastest from each club at all and probably hasn't for a couple of decades.

For all we know, the bombing it in could be more strategic than we give it credit for. And not just talking about Cox, but all coaches.

There is logic to getting it in deep and fast (behave caesar) if your forward has a 1v1 and you can put his opponent under the pump. Amartey's one-hander against Freo came from a ball being banged in; there was nothing particularly artful about the kick, but it came in fast and direct enough that it was to Amartey's advantage as he was able to out-body his opponent and mark it.

I also think there's logic in getting it to a key forward and banking on them halving the contest to create a ground ball or forward stoppage, which have become almost as reliable avenues to goals as marks and set-shots. We all love seeing short targets hit up inside 50 for shots at goal, but with set-shot accuracy as poor as I can ever remember it being, you can waste entries relying on that. And even worse, if it's a behind then you just hand possession back to the opposition and then have to defend their ball movement. A mark inside 50 and set-shot is one singular 50/50 chance. A high ball brought to ground and turned into repeat stoppages or pressure opportunities can produce multiple 50/50 chances.

Not saying I love the long bomb, because I don't. Nor do I think there's always a rhyme or reason to it, sometimes it is just a genuine panic, lack of composure thing (and as I mentioned, I think we put ourselves under pressure a lot with the clearances we win out the back of stoppages). But I think it's not this devil that is going to be the reason we don't win a flag, and I think it's a necessary part of the game with the way footy is played in the 2020s.
I suspect sometimes the long bomb is strategic, sometimes it is panic, and more than a few times, there simply is no other option.

I know Matt Taberner from Freo , now retired . He's from Victoria so used the all expenses paid trip to run in it and was on the turps

All true.

And yet there’s a lot of players slower than Gus.

I do like him , but hasn't done enough this year . Big chance for Hanners 2 to step up and kick a couple

I agree, I’m fine him getting a game but I won’t bag Cox if he drops him. So far I put my hand up and say I was wrong maybe the injuries he’s had have done him as a player who knows there.

I’d be more disappointed if everyone in the race wasn’t on the beers lol

The big question is will Parker kick the ball to the opposition.

He seemed pretty good against Adelaide and other than last year what a durable player he has been. Tough to see him finish elsewhere but i'd be mortified if Swans fans boo him.

I don't think we've booed any player really, and it's in Melbourne. Be interesting if it was in Sydney but I personally never get this booing thing what is the point

Won't be booing him as long as he keeps going with his over the head dump kicks.

This is the game where we need to dominate the ruck.

Yes Grundy has seemed like he has been carrying something but last game he was better against Freo and an extra week off should help.

I mostly say this because the vision of North training and Xerri like can barely walk properly so if he is in we need to go to pound town with him and make him feel it. If not who is their backup ruck Teakle?
