We are missing REAL tough players, a JPK, a Brett Kirk or a ROK. This sort of player at the coalface wins you games, they go in there at all cost and win the ball OR they defend HARD while protecting the pretty boy runner. The closest we have is rowbottom but meh.

This group are mere runners and soft, very very soft like marshmallows.

We are also missing a defensive duo, a batman and robin, we were blessed in this department for years. I mean FFS blakey?

Sorry for the intrusion
That was a great win by the Lions with all the injuries and the postponement by the Cyclone

Levi looks great really looking forward to watching the Ashcroft brothers for the next 12 years

Zac Bailey looks like having a breakout season
I think this is more related to your own page...........

To be fair, the tackling was pretty good yesterday. Certainly a step up from R0 and the GF.

Funny, you should say this. A mate of mine reckons the problem with our team is that we don’t have any mongrel.

This is a regroup year, truck load of injuries, too many passengers in our team to be a serious threat this year, I can see us missing finals
And where were Brisbane after round 4. 1 & 3 so not all is lost.
That was simply a game we threw away. I don't think I've seen a game where we dropped so many simple unopposed marks. Cost us at least 4 goals. Add to that the goals we gifted them from just dumb mistakes.
In general play, we were a 5 goal better side but just threw it away.

I think maybe unwisely that Florent was overall ok today, I’ll put up with his dumb moments, I think punts is right he needs to be inside more, good evasion and at least has a go.

I’ll also cut Robert’s slack he is still young, but again he gives a shit and cracks in, why is asked to be one out deep so much? I feel like his mistakes come from being willing to cover others.
Blakey made far more errors than Roberts yet he seems to be getting away with it.

I think the timing of Roberts error is the issue and he was really under zero pressure. Think back to the outrage when Ollie made the same blue last week.

But yes, the Lizard is prone to a clanger or 2. Gis dropped mark that lead to a goal against the play was an absolute shocka. But the notion he gets a free pass on this forum.......

Papley, Hayward, McInerney ... all on good coin and contribute nothing to the team right now.

Hamling and Hanily though. They were great!
I agree. Some of Papley, Macca and Wilbur's efforts were a disgrace. Not one of them put any pressure on either. But it was the disposal that got me. Amartey's terrible shot at goal that didn't even make the distance from 30 metres. The kicks out of defence that were just turnovers, Blakey four times, Roberts twice, including that kick to Dunkley. Heeney's terrible handball, not just once but four times he couldn't find one of our players and once gave it straight to a Lions player, same with Grundy at one stage.

This performance was not up to AFL standard. One of our greats said it, and Pebbles, you are right. This was a performance, that had this been the theatre would have been booed and howled down, our players get paid far more than stage actors. I was incredibly upset during the game at the lack of effort of some of our players. Not the younger, less experienced players, but our experienced, so called stars. Heeney, Chad, Grundy, Macca, Wilbur, Paps. They all looked on at times as their opponents ran off them. Rainer ain't that fast, believe me and Heeney just let him run off and kick a goal. Bailey did what he wanted with nobody for company. Who was on him? Chad? I saw Chad at one stage trotting down the near side between wing and centre while an opponent just ran away and they kicked a goal. He didn't once try to impact the contest or put pressure on and they did some sloppy work before kicking yet another goal. No wonder the defence was in disarray. They were trying to play their own opponent, the mids and forwards opponents as well. I thought most of the backs were pretty good except for execution on occasions. I don't think Paton did anything wrong. In fact, I would have benched Rampe, he just bombed the ball every time and gave it back to the Lions talls.

But my biggest bomb is to the coach. Cox, if you are going to take McCartin out of the forward line how about replacing him with someone who can take a contested mark. Like maybe Hamling? No. Not you. You put Macca at FF. Great move as your incompetent mids bombed the ball long to him three times in a row only to have the ball come flying back. It's a good thing they were nearly as incompetent as us. It was a terrible game to watch and the skill level of both sides was't just lamentable it was a disgrace. These players should not get paid for that. If I do a terrible job I get sacked or my hours cut. I get docked for really bad mistakes. This mob get nothing, Yet they are the most overpaid bunch amateurs posing as professionals. If you are professional, you do a professional job and neither team could boast that of yesterday's match.

One that got away. We should have won by 3 goals.

Keep getting the games into Hanily, Hamling and Bice.

Braeden Campbell stepped up in this game, and two goals.
Riley Bice looked terrific when subbed on late in the 3rd Q.
James Jordon, great job.

Tackles:
J.Rowbottom 11
J.Jordon 7
B.Campbell 7

Lachie Neale
10 disposals and 136m gained

Riley Bice (in a bit over a quarter)
12 disposals and 304m gained

I’ll say it once again.
Horse was huge on having a team of players that can play in multiple positions. Not master any of them but be capable of the job.
All of our defenders when recruited were different players as juniors. Apart from Rampe, none were natural defenders.
McCartin the big one.
All the small defenders were once mids or forwards.

Yesterday we finally had two blokes recruited to the club as defenders. Hamling & Bice.
Horse had Hamling practicing to be a forward all year in 2024.
That’s disgraceful coaching & recruiting. The poor guy is a defender first. A premiership defender who played on Buddy for that title.
Rotting in the forward line in the reserves.
In 2022 GF we had Paddy McCartin. Wonderful interceptor, terrible defender.
Now Bice & Hamling in the team together can help us go forward with time together. As far as I’m concerned Tom McCartin needs to learn his forward play in the reserves for 10 weeks because he’s no good doing it in the ones when McLean is capable of rucking, allowing Amartey to just play forward.
We are a lost list who have all sorts of roles.
Lloyd & Florent are given other roles in the seniors so that they can play seniors rather than dropping them to the twos to work on their form at a slower pace. It’s all experimental.
Got me f k. D
Hamling was playing forward in reserves because:

  • we had no forward targets, which ruined half of our 2023 VFL season, Ladhams had a good start but then was bereft of forward nous, Buller was injured
  • we had surplus KPDs, Francis had a better start and it makes sense to develop the kids in their actual position instead of someone we already know about
  • he was actually fairly good so we kept him there

But yeah, let's pretend like it was bad coaching.

Many on this board have been crying out for a two x tall-forward setup. Having Amartey ruck is the cost of this. If Grundy had any ability to play forward then it would work better but he doesn’t.
Amartey having to ruck would be fine if he wasn't the main goal threat.

Given McCartin likely has to go back, hopefully one of McLean, Ladhams, Buller had a good game yesterday and can perform the 2nd ruck/KPF role so Amartey can focus.

Or maybe McLean or Buller could get among the goals and we're less reliant on Amartey.

Both were poor mistakes.

Roberts error was bad but it was not the clanger Blakeys dropped mark was.

Roberts was trying to make a play….had noone up the ground working for space he lierally was resigned to the short kick and fluffed it. I f his teammates were working a little harder up the ground he wiuld have been able to kick long.

Blakey dropped a mark as a key defender that mosu under12 s would havd taken..w very little pressure and gifted a goal.

Why is everyone melting down?

We played well and the intensity was stacks better. We lost by 4. What is slightly annoying we play like this r1 and we win though. I’m fine losing by 4 to the Lions they are an excellent football side

Easily pleased.

Effort was more consistent, except we dropped off in Q3.

Lions were clearly rustier in the first half given disruptions and first game. Injury issues early. Jordon removed their best player from the game. We failed to capitalise with skill errors, dumb decisions and lack of effort from some individuals.

They were there for the taking and we flubbed our lines.

Why is them being an excellent side an excuse, we were minor premiers!
