The core strength is a problem right throughout the club. It’s why the bigger clubs like the Lions and Cats beat us easily in the midfield. We can’t win it on speed alone. Been saying for a last few years now, none of our players ever bulk up. This is a concern for me
I don't disagree. But I think it's more important to some than to others, and it effects some more than others. For example I am not so bothered if a half back flanker who is being fed handball receives and short kicks by the galleon can not stick a tackle or win a marking contest due to their core strength. They have their avenues into the game that don't require any.

Just about all of our players look like outside runners

Two things:

Thing one: Hayward's best is very good indeed. His lightish frame lets him compete against taller players in the air and his pace is blistering. He just seems to be out of sorts, which he does sometimes. In my view he seems to be improving game by game. Don't forget this is different forward setup and folks are finding their feet. 40 goals last year was a damn good haul given how much the goals were being shared around.

Thing two: There are specific core muscles for different roles. Corey Warner has clearly worked to increase his core strength. He seems to break more tackles and lay more. But watching the video of him winning the first of the 2 x 2k runs, he still finishes more like a distance runner than a sprinter, wasting energy on head and torso movement when pumping his arms should transmit through a strong tight core to his legs. He would benefit from building the core strength for a finishing sprint, or what endurance runners refer to as their kick. At the end of an endurance race the arms make all the difference to tired legs.

Youtube Dibaba of Ethiopia win the 2012 Olympic 10,000m Gold. She kicks with 500m to go, her arms and legs pump while her head and core remain perfectly still, she looks effortless. Then compare her with the Aussie runner who finished last about 2 mins later. I don't want to take anything away from any athlete who can make an Olympic final but she clearly doesn't have the core strength of Dibaba. After 10k she looked like Corey did after 2k, pumping her arms but much of the energy wasted in moving her head and her torso.

Mmmm, I like half-back flankers to be able to stick a tackle, even if they can't bring the tackled player down. Just hang on and stop play or even get a free

Will & others need to improve their tackling technique which would lead to better effective tackles & pressure. Pin the arm ffs, too often I've seen us tackle around the waist allowing the opposition player to handball. I think it's an issue around the league rather than just our team.

Will isn't going to change his physique now but can improve on the tackling technique.

I Reckon they should watch/study Ian Roberts tackle
this one on Potter, there was a better one on Gary Jack, but youtube didn't have it

Bring out the tackling bags
For those who remember.. how good was Ian Roberts - a gay man playing rugby league and Destroying opponents!

I love this because Ian Roberts deserves all the praise he gets and then some. He is a hero.

But when I think of special tackles (from the days when I used to follow rugby - of either variety) I think of this one:

Ian Roberts doesn’t get nearly the kudos he deserves for being an openly gay man playing rugby league when he did. I find it hard to think about anything more courageous I have seen on a sporting field.

To put it into perspective, that recent Aussie A League player was the first openly gay professional soccer player anywhere in the world. And I’m pretty sure no one in Aussie Rules has been openly gay.

And those leagues today are nothing like rugby league in the 80’s and 90’s.

Campbell has improved his tackling technique, arguably the smallest/lightest body in our team but with a great tackling technique.
I agree. Currently second at the club for tackles, equal with Heeney, who we know has that great rugby-esque technique.

If Campbell can become a consistent presence without the ball inside 50, that could be very handy this year. I honestly can't remember the last time we had a genuinely elite pressure player in our forward line. Maybe Papley in his first few years, and McGlynn before that?

Wicks and Hanily are the other good tacklers...they follow through with their tackles. Sometimes watching Florent or Blakey it's like they're playing touch football...I get afl is a lot about staying on your feet for the next play but perhaps if you totally commit to a tackle and bring yourself and the tackled player to ground you can stop the movement and then the staying alive for the next tackle is not as important. It's like they just put pressure and then move to the next player with the ball and so on
