Stadium deals: the winners are soccer and rugby

You have sort of answered the question yourself. AFL is able to pay for itself due to its overwhelming support in Melbourne. Soccer and Rugby on the other hand need a hand to establish themselves. If that means better deals for those codes for long term gain, sobeit!!

You have just explained why the stadium deals should not be this way.

We should not be giving socialist handouts to people who are here to try and eat into our market share.

At best we should give commercially appropriate deals to everybody (i.e. make them pay what stadium access is worth and what allows the stadiums to make a reasonable return). The alternative is as silly as standing behind the bloke at the milk bar who just paid $2.50 for his milk, and I ask the shopkkeeper, can I pay $1.50 as I can't afford $2.50 yet. Bollocks.

A better example would be that during winter, people are clamouring to buy milk, so much that they can't keep up with demand, yet during summer their is no demand so all milk produced goes to waste. They offer a cheaper rate over summer as a result.

So you think we should have a new government funded stadium for table tennis, to give that sport a leg up?

What? I was talking about the relative suitability of a venue for a particular sport, not popularity. Please try to keep up.

Although if you want to go down that route, yes it seems reasonable that a sport that is the most played, had the most popular national team and the 3rd most popular domestic league in the country (2nd within Melbourne), then of course.

If you consider that the stadium is for two of the three most popular national teams, and three of the five most popular domestic leagues in the country - it's an open and shut case really.

If they are that popular, why don't they pay for their own stadium?

The Vic Gov is chasing the big events(SOO,Test matches,RU tests, soccer matches..etc) so if they want these sporting matches they need a good stadium...they will now have one that won't sit idle outside of the above mentioned .
it will get used all yr round.

Exactly.
Plus:
- The clubs using it are quite new and don't have that kind of cashflow yet.
- It's easier for an independent body to run it when three different sports will be using it. Look at Newcastle Jets - they have to sublease off Newcastle Knights who have full rights to the stadium.

So Frank Lowy - the richest or 2nd richest man in Australia - didn't have ANY money to put into contributing to building this stadium. Not even 1 million dollars... not even $500,000. The ONLY ones who could fund it was the state govt?

The NRL - the 2nd most popular sport in Australia if based on tv ratings- also didn't have ANY money whatsoever to put into the building of this stadium?
Not even $20,000...not even $200,000 ... no thanks the taxpayers can pay for it.

Ok yes..sure that makes sense.

The same applies but more so for the MCG, but the remaining $320m debt on that stadium is serviced by the money paid by the AFL clubs that play there, driving them broke. The point made at the beginning of this thread is that in addition to not putting up any money for the rectangular stadium in the first place, the soccer and rugby clubs are about to score bargain basement tenancy deals giving them a major commercial advantage over the AFL clubs.
Why is this fair?

Firstly, it won't be 30 matches it will be closer to 50 when you add in 23 soccer games (plus finals), 12 rugby league games (plus finals) and 12 Super 15's (plus finals).

Not to mention internationals from the various sports and it's advantage as a concert and festival venue for Melbourne in summer months!

Secondly, why don't you factor in naming rights, catering and pouring rights, corporate box sales and a limited form of stadium membership? Not to mention rent from the Victory, Storm and Demons who are basing their admin in the building.

This stadium at a cost of $300 million will be cash flow positive from the start, just like the Docklands was.

DST
:D

Geez - I'm sure the Victory & Heart will be only too delighted to have the turf roughed up in the middle of their seasons!

Seen what happened at Docklands earlier this year with Sensation? Victory were not happy about that at all. Hardly see any concert revenue going to this new ground if its going to be as overbooked as you're also telling us.
