Finals contender??
Our tall key forwards are Cox, Cameron, McMahon, Johnson and Kelly!!
So you mean effectively a deeper group than the one that took us to back to back top 4 finishes in 18-19? Plus Mihocek and Kreuger.

Our forward line isn’t even the issue anyway it’s our midfield that’s fallen off a cliff the past 18 months. All of Grundy, Steele and Pendles were AA quality back then.

FWIW I also said finals contender not premiership contender…

That's why I'm a bit more bullish than most. I think a rejuvenated Grundy is likely. I also think the same with Sidey. Adams keeps improving. Who knows what we'll get from JDG and Lipinski, but if it's good our midfield might go well.

its weird / slightly disappointing. The fact that Macrae / Poulter & McInnes - in their second years - cant even make the emergencies in a weak side, either means they have big deficiencies to work on, or the selection panel are committed to only playing these players when midfield gaps open up. Harvey Harrison even made the emergencies ffs!
I think there is too much expectation on these kids. They are in the main not top end draft picks, they will take time if they do make it. We played a lot of them very early last year out of necessity. VFL time to develop will be good for them and they need that to work out which of the kids from that last 3 drafts will become best 22. Its not likely all the 3 you named for instance will make it just based on the numbers. Then look at someone like Chugg, average in his 1st season, and coming from a draft pick where of the previous 23 players picked at 28 in the rookie draft only 1 has managed more than 24 career games. Dean Cox so he was a pretty good exception. Chugg really is more likely to join the 13 of 23 who never debuted.

We need patience with these kids and them playing VFL most of 22 wont be a bad thing. AFL too early stunts careers and development for mine.

Reckon we are a chance tonight based on their injuries and the tendency for round 1 to throw up funny results.

If we do bounce it will likely be on the back of our seniors improving a bit. Its probably more likely we will see Pendles, Howe, Roughy amd maybe even Sidey and Tay as players in decline. Grundy, Moore and JDG are really the ones most likely to give us a bounce.

Mark Stevens just tweeted expect to see more Covid curve balls as early as this afternoon.Could he be referring to our game tonight? We know Covid has devastated our women’s team,so could it be spreading to the men’s team as well?

Whilst they may be in a general decline over time - I think Sidey, Tay and obviously Howe are likely to offer significantly more than last year. It's a bounce versus last year I'm talking about, not a bounce back to 2019 standards.

Win, lose or draw - this is exciting. New Coach- new game plan- new players, a lot to look forward to.

It'll be interesting to if they bring intensity to every contest and really try to take the game on. No excuses for not giving it everything.

You don’t just see a half empty glass, you see a potential drowning hazard.

Agree with much but a game or three then back to the 2nds to work on a few things doesn’t hurt

Henry is an example of that. His early games were a struggle but it didn’t break his spirit

It’s when you play kids who are overwhelmed week in and out… that hurts them

Each week we should absolutely have 10-12 a week playing in that sub 50-60 game category… considering that games bracket includes a number of mature age players like madgen, Cameron, Cox, Wilson, Murphy, etc.

Then you rotate the N Daicos, Poulter, Macrae, McInness, Henry in and out depending on form and fitness

We’re not moving the list forward playing WHE (and before that the J Thomas and Maynes) each week over say Poulter just because one has a more mature body

The worst thing would be to conservatively play seniors week in and out and finish bottom 6 each year

Such a big gap between VFL competency and playing 50-100 senior games

That what Macrare had said early on when he was Hired.

WHE is Very Underrated

Nick might be the Exemption of that Rule

Its a balance question. We need to 1st identify the ones likely.to make.it and they are the ones who need games. Out of say Poulter, Bianco, McCreery, Macrae, McGinness, Ginnivan , McMahon and Chugg half will probably be off the list in 2-3 seasons. No help inf we get 20 - 50 games into players who dont make it. Thats the problem of pumping games before they are ready. They need to earn spots by weight of performance.
