As a general rule I think it’s better than being stuck in the middle part of the ladder, but that changes I reckon if you land “difference makers” like I think Phillipou and Wanganeen Milera are, with mid-first rounders. The premise of the thread is that you have to go to bottom four for a few years to build a decent list. With that in mind it will be interesting to see if we can eventually end up as contenders.
I think Pou in particular has what’s required to be that Heeney/Bont/Petracca/Dusty/Danger type, that you can build a list and team around, and who you normally need a top 4 pick to acquire.
He’s looking every bit like being that big-bodied guy, that can kill it in the midfield and then push or play forward and kick goals, and landing one of them at 10 (like Adelaide did with Danger) can enable you to avoid bottoming out.
Looking at Hawthorn who will probably win a flag or three in the next few years, and they may only have Watson who they landed with a top 5 pick. And that was pick 5.
I think our list build is EXTREMELY similar to theirs, and if we have a good year this year, we’ll land our versions of Barrass and Battle in October.
