Prediction St.Kilda Best 22

Seb was two time B&F!

But I do feel Higgo and Steele are definitely classy players. Actually maybe Steele is somehwere between Lenny Hayes and Seb Ross at his peak in 2016. And could still be the champs in the hour of triumph. If Steele or Higgo kicked the winning goal in a flag it would be deserving...
I didn't say Ross was bad, i said he wasn't anything like Steele.

Do you remember this time last year? When we would try to predict the best 22?

Who were the players that ended up surprising you that they were picked so often?

For me, I’d say Ronnie Byrnes comes to mind. Perhaps even Hunter C! I thought Ronnie was gonna be a reserve regular in ‘24. Not to be.

Bonner was still in everybody’s good books back then. Do t know exactly when that changed, but boy did the switch flip!

But then, to make it even more interesting, Bonner was consistently picked, over and above others too.

And to add the final twist, was one of the first chopped!!

It was a very odd year in retrospect. Agree?
I had Monty in my top 3 improvers but l guess the standouts were him, Coops and Pou. Darcy's debut season was simply outstanding and Hugo should have gotten more games.
But in retrospect it was a definitely an odd season. Hopefully it was one step back 2 steps forward if we can just get a better run with injuries.

You mean you were surprised Coops and Pou played so many games?

Sharman was picked 18 times*. Kicked 18.12, < 10 possessions per game

*I think a few were sub? Or was that last year?

Pou was picked 13 times.
Kicked 8.8
14 possessions a game

More surprised at the quality of outcome from Coops and Pou after their VFL stints. They took a big jump.
Monty has been more linear by comparison.

I noticed the Pou lift. I’m a Sharman fan, but he’s kind of enigmatic. Maybe it’s the career arc and that injury he had. Took four games to kick his first ten goals. Two years to kick his next ten.

He played a heap in defence in between.

And hopefully never again
Yeah, he was mainly forward this year. Was that partly to do with King down? Was Coops lucky to even get games? Especially with Owens down. Caminiti in defence was a surprise though, so my guess is that Coops is a forward from now on.

Coops wasn't lucky, e should never have been out of the team or i defence. He's better than Hammer and he's a very solid mark and kick at goal, gotta be FF with King CHF (kicks truly from 40-55 out and needs to be on the lead).

Interesting to see how the two first rounders fit in next year. Both seem like types that could fit in quickly to the best 22. Travaglia in particular has an opening to the spot Bonner occupied this year. He seems like a solid D7 type. Has the height to spoil well and intercept. Looks like he knows how to play accountable defence, while also having a strong rebound game.

Tauru has an opening to Battle's spot and I can see him overtaking a few quickly for it.

Early look at it:
FB: Tauru Howard Webster
HB: NWM Wilkie Sinclair
C: Hill Steele Wood
HF: Henry King Wilson
FF: Higgins Caminiti Sharman
Foll: Marshall Macrae Phillipou
I: Travaglia Windhager Owens Butler
Sub: Garcia

Clark, Stocker, Dow,Byrnes and Jones clearly will be right in the mix and will all play games.

FB: Webster - Wilkie - Tauru/Arie
HB: NWM - Howard - Sinclair
C: Hill - Steele - Wilson
HF: Henry - Sharman - Butler
FF: Higgins - King - Caminiti
R: Marshall - Macrae - Windhager
I: Phillipou - Owens - Garcia - Travaglia
S: Dow/Carroll/Stocker/Clark/Byrnes

Really want games into Keeler & Heath if we can. Keeler especially as that R/F option.

My updated crack. We drafted no mid because we plan on moving NWM on ball. Butler gets the ass as i can't fit him.

I think Travagelia and Tauru wont see much senior action this season and look a little light in the body being the young guys they are, but no doubt the potential is there and hopefully will develop well at Sandy.

Hate to say it, but i hope we don't see too much of Webster next year.

We have too many mid sized defenders needing valuable minutes.

Don't want to see Schoenmaker, Trav and Tauru all spending the year in the VFL.

Even with Webster out, still struggle to see them getting a whole heap of opportunities at the moment.

Maybe Sinclair does make a full time move to the mids too. A bit of short term pain for long term gain.

Will be hard to balance developing the list with being competitive enough to convince NWM to re-sign and potentially attracting an LDU, Callaghan or Aleer.

Not sure thr dual narratives strategy is a winner tbh but we couldn't afford yet another rebuild... what would it be our 3rd or 4th since Lyon left the first time?

It's probably Webster and Stocker competing for one role. You need a dedicated shut down small defender. Webster is fine for now I think. He's good at what he does.

Yeah I think JWeb is a lock. He's really our only lockdown defender when it comes to small forwards.

I could see Travaglia being that Hardwick type small defender, taking kickouts and swinging on ball or forward as needed but we need Stocker (or... someone) to really take that role on.

There's a spot up for grabs in the next couple of years if anyone's brave enough to take it.

How I'd line up to start.

- Webster had a real down year last year for a number of reasons so think this is Travaglia's spot to start. Webster's big strength was his 1v1 loss %, which was in the bottom 50% for medium defenders this year and he offers little else, lets see what the kid can do.

- Barrett straight in for Battle, no better like for like our there aside from the age gap. Means lots of work for Wilkie/Howard and likely Wood with a focused defensive winger role. Could go Caminiti here but frankly I'd like to see hammer kick 50 for sandy next year and still be held out. Barrett looks like he could hold this down year 1 with his speed, power and kicking all strong already.

- Tauru straight in to build game experience up. Hope he makes it as a forward, looks so natural.

- Shoenmaker needs to just come out swinging at Sandy and become undeniable, take someones spot you wouldn't expect but we need to be a little patient with him i think.

- Byrnes over Garcia for substitute just so he can dominate Sandy.

Carrol and Hall won’t be far off..
Doubt Hugo will be sub again, likely best 22 I’m tipping

Is the NWM on ball point based on club intel or just a bunch?

On what i want and hope to see, lol.

Is it really a stretch that our emerging best player is moved into the engine room?
Fair. I’d also love to see it but I’m not convinced he can. Potentially around the ground but not sure at centre bounce. In addition, I think his defending and intercept marking are really improving and while already a gun HBF, I think he his several gears to go up.
