Social media to be banned for under 16s

I'm guessing proving your age will involve linking your MyGov/MyID to your Facebook/Twitter/Instagram etc. Might not bother in that case. I very rarely use social media. It's going to be a shitshow and it wouldn't surprise me if the real motive here is to get people used to using digital ID.

Apart from your 36,000 Bigfooty posts!

The co-author of a study cited by the nation’s communications minister in arguing for a teen social media ban says his research does not justify the policy, suggesting the government has misunderstood the paper.

The paper found that there are age and sex-specific windows of sensitivity to social media use at a population level. But the authors continued that these “most probably meaningfully differ across individuals”, meaning that each person responds differently to social media based on factors such as their personality, social circle and environment.

Rather than leading to the idea that we should blanket ban children from social media, the paper’s authors suggest these findings “could pave pathways for targeted interventions that address the negative consequences of social media while also promoting its positive uses”.

The authors’ nuanced conclusions comport with concerns raised to the eSafety commissioner, the government’s internet safety regulator, in a letter from 140 Australian and international experts who took issue with the bluntness of a ban.

First they said Youtube will be banned for under 16s. Now they are claiming it's ok because it's educational. Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook will require all users to provide ID regardless of age. Bigfooty too I assume. But Pornhub won't.

The whole thing is a shmozzle.

This is the symptom of gross negligence and a lack of parental fitness. Never has being a parent been so weak as it is now. So lazy and lax. Parents are being the kids friend rather then their parents

Wouldn't a pron site be restricted to 18+ anyway?

All this stuff seems silly to me. I've ordered alcohol online which is obviously restricted to 18+ only and all that is usually required is entering a birth date. No one with half a brain that is under 18 is going to enter their actual birth date for something with an age restriction,

There are rules for accessing pr0n sites and buying alcohol but they are not enforced. Children can click on a button to say they are 18 or enter a false DOB.

It seems strange that the government is only clamping down on under 16s accessing social media. It won't work and the only way it can be enforced is for everyone having to provide their ID regardless of age.
