Socceroos versus Germany

Who to blame? Should players like Lucas Neill and Craig Moore really be playing the offside trap so many times in one game? Should Vince Grella really be a professional footballer? Does Harry Kewell actually exist anymore or he just a enigma? Should a team this slow be playing 2 midfielders that deep?

TBH if you blamed the coach or the players you would be wrong. It was everyones fault (bar Emerton). In fairness to Germany though they were brilliant. Muller and Ozil tore us apart. Very composed and clever players at such a young age, especially Muller who took his goal with the poise of a veteran

I really think our defence is too slow to play the offside trap and it showed tonight. If we don't change something, our campaign will be well and truly stuffed against a pacey Ghana team.

Well we did win one thing - the anthem singing? I could hardly hear any of the words to the German one and yet when they played ours, 30,000 people were singing it :thumbsu:

And yet at home games in Australia, we never have that atmosphere. You might have 5,000 to 10,000 in a group chanting but that is it.

I still maintain the blue strip is ridiculous - since when has black/white clashed with green and gold? Stupid FIFA.......

Agreed- that double blue had me doing a double take- was i watching the right team? Ranks up as one of the worst strips in the tournament- why no green and gold? Surely not a clash situation, unless the refs had no other kit- which would seem stupid.

The other 10 could of played in mankinis and still not looked any stupider than Lucas Neill berating the ref time and time again over correct calls. I think Green and Gold belongs to South Africa for this World Cup. Let them have it i say

You win. Goals against stuff things up yes but the proposition is simple for Australia. They need a result vs Ghana. No result = elimination

We have to get 3 points against Ghana, no chance otherwise. Then we could still go through with a draw against Serbia. We are all supporting Germany now as well.

Thanks guys.

...Go you Germans!!

i've got the grumps...

i get up in minus 5 degree temperatures for that shit.

the game, and possibly the world cup for the socceroos was over, if not at the selection table then definitely 20 minutes into the match.

after 20 minutes, our only world class midfielder was playing as an isolated quasi striker. our defenders had been made to look like the old, slow bastards that they are by oesil and podolski. you can't play the offside when you're that friggen slow!

it became very evident very quickly that not only did we have no avenue to goals, but that we would be lucky to not be hammered.

at around that point, they shot to the australian bench and our "brains trust" of verbeek and arnold looking utterly bewildered.

it would've been worse if the germans hadn't gone to sleep for the first 20 minutes of the first half.

yes, we should've had a penalty, but i'm not going to whinge about cahills red card. it was a dangerous tackle from behind, it should be a red card.

what do we do now? well, be grateful for the experience, and be grateful that verbeek wont be back after the world cup.

4-5-1 park the bus will eek out some boring results against substandard asian competiton. it won't get you anywhere at this level.

of course, it isn't over yet. but it will be over really quickly if we go in with that line up again because the speed of the ghanians will carve our defence up this badly again. and we've got no cover for them.

craig moore's gotta go. he's old as shit to begin with, and his lack of match fitness at 34 years of age stuck out like a sore thumb. its a shame rhys williams was injured and missed the squad, because he was the obvious replacement. jade north would've been my next cab off the rank, but of course he obviously missed the squad. we're stuck with moore, beauchamp or milligan, who are all as slow as each other.

4-5 years ago under the flexible hiddink formation, scott chipperfield was our most important player. today he was worst on ground. badly exposed for pace time and time again meant he wouldn't move more than 30 metres from his own by-line with left our left mid (culina, then garcia, then maybe holman - all who were out of position there) badly exposed.

valeri is an ok player, but wasn't sighted for the first 30 minutes. grella was begging for a card before getting subbed .

the thing that nearly made me throw the remote was holman - an absolute twat, a terrible player, australias worst sportsperson who won't get get picked ever again once verbeek has gone - running around in an offside position, demanding the ball like he's leo messi, then cracking the shits when it isn't given to him. actually, that was the second near remote throw - the first one was, when 2-0 down, a hack midfielder in grella was replaced with a worse hack midfielder in holman when we still didn't have a striker on the pitch!

complete ****wit. 95% of australian football fans will agree with me that it should be nicky carle playing that position.

but guess what? he's also not there.

and going forward? i know we were playing a defensive line up, but you aren't going to score many goals with no strikers on the field. the problem with our 4-5-1 is that we don't have a striker that suits the position. i would've thought u pick the formation to suit the players, not the players to suit the formation. but fair enough, each manager has their own philosophy.

the problem with the philosophy is that verbeek stuck with it for 3 years expecting mark viduka to come back, and he never did. it should've been niki rukavytsa or even bruce djite playing this position for 3 years. no, not our best strikers, but the only ones we have that suit that system. or aloisi, who did enough for sydney fc last season to have been given a hell of a lot more consideration than he was.

of course, verbeek tells us its a 4-3-3. if only it was! anything would be better than this mornings 4-6-0. a 4-3-3 would see us in a good position for the next game with kennedy in the middle, kewell on the left and mcdonald on the right. but of course, mcdonald isn't there. (in fairness, garcia or bresciano could play there).

i think the point is made. the problem is squad selection. the answers to this problem lie with guys outside the squad.

ideally the team for the next game could afford to be schwarzer - emerton, north, williams, neill - wilkshire, carle (for lack of cahill), grella - mcdonald, kennedy, kewell

unfortunately through verbeek's squad selection, the team will be exactly the same with holman coming in for cahill and kewell coming in for garcia (who was actually one of our better players).

this team and this manager suck.

The green and yellow/gold strip looks shizen anyway, the old Blue strip looked much better not this years though something odd about it.

Was this surprising? The Aussie are the biggest bunch of overrated hacks, looks like most on here overrated them and have had their delusions shattered, masterclass from the Germans, they can talk the talk and walk the walk.

The Aussie media and fans going on an orgy of overrating this shit side, now have to deal with the embarrassment that is the Socceroos a soft cuddly toy.

the German coach said the australians were a good warm up

i'd suggest thats being very flattering. who exactly did it warm up? there defenders didn't have to do anything, and their forwards might as well have been playing against witches hats.

I reckon you're right.

The last WC was socceroos peak. If Italy hadn't won the diving competition (cheating scum)....anything could have happened.
