So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

I think most people would have Mitchell in their top 5 - 10. Seems to go pretty well in the top 50 from Mike Sheahan too. He's genuinely respected as one of the best in the game at the moment.

What more do you want?

I thought there might be a dissenting voice.

I don't want anything - don't care if he does/ doesn't get the plaudits he deserves. I was merely stating an opinion: I think he's underrated - still.

I get the feeling he never gets the extra drool factor that other star midfielders get - mainly because he's not fast. I think you have to be a Hawks fan to really get it - this guy is not just a good player, but an absolute superstar. I'm thinking he'll go down as a legend of the Hawthorn Football Club. The guy never has a bad year. He's rarely out of the side. Does his job week-in and week-out. He consistently does freakish things with his feet (both sides), and sometimes does pin-point handballs that travel 30 metres. He's not fast on his feet, but he's like lightning in his decision-making. And he is an absolute footy brain. The guy is a think-tank. And he's tough as hell.

The Richmond game marks his 250 with the club - time to knock them over again.

Sam Mitchell...still doesn't get the kudos he deserves.

Josh Gibson...

I think he does.. when you have a team who plays behind the HEADLINE acts up forward… everyone else can't fit on the same stage.. that the media love to TALK up… take it from me… North's 90's were littered with such 'under appreciated' players who took a backseat to the Carey & McKernan.

While I'm here… I'd like to mention Patch Adams. Plays the game without fanfare… is a foundation piece of the new rising of the SHINBONERS. :thumbsu:

I agree with the Cunnington suggestions. I think he is starting to get some recognition now though.

I really rate lachie henderson as well. Think hes as good a swingman as ben ried

Tom Macdonald for the Dees. Everyone raves about Frawley, but frankly he's been barely better than average since mid-2011 (until last Sunday). Tommy Mac takes on the Nick Reiwoldts of the world constantly, behind the worst leaking midfield of all time, and keeps them to very low scores. Granted, he can't hit the side of a barn with a kick (and that's on his good side, on his bad side he can't hit the ball), but he is one brilliant negating defender, with a tank as big as anyone. Can take a million-dollar player out of the game, 9 times out of 10.

Outside of the Dees, I'd nominate Callan Ward and (surprisingly, as a Collingwood player who would generally get overrated due to their constant prime-time TV slots) Jamie Elliott. Unbelievable skill and courage for a small forward, I reckon, and plays like he's got ice in his veins when the pressure's on.

Besides Ablett, I think Mitchell is the best player in the game. If he'd been born four inches taller or 1m/s faster (or both), he'd be one of the best of all time. He makes absolutely every possession count, and his vision in traffic is just ridiculous.

Now THAT'S the esteem with which many Hawks fans hold Sammy. I'm sure many people here wouldn't put him as number two in the competition...or am I wrong?

I'm prepared to be proven wrong!

I'd say Mitchell is top 10 definitely, he's a gun, but I'd personally have Watson (biased admittedly), Selwood, Pendlebury and Fyfe ahead. EDIT: and of course Ablett

What a way to put. I can't disagree with that.

So why then, does it appear that there are infinitely more Hawks fans willing to help Hodge and Rioli masturbate, then are willing to lend Mitchell a hand .

IMO, Sam Mitchell is clearly your best and most vital player.

And the discussion degenerates into this kind of smut...I'll have to review my positive thoughts on PA's resurrection...

Luke Parker
Puropolo
Dempster
Haynes (GWS)
Redden

Thoughts?
Haynes is a really good one. Developing nicely, still needs work in the gym however.

Sorry to offend, that wasn't my intention. Just a poor attempt at humour. My bad

To clarify, I'm not saying Hawks fans underrate Mitchell and overrate Hodge. Rather that in an indirect way, the level they rate Rioli/Hodge, subsequently underrates Mitchell.

Check here:
Sammy's and Burger's 250th

I think a good portion of Hawks fans would rate Sammy above Hodge and Cyril - I do, in the grand scheme of things. There was even some talk when Hodge was down in 2012 that Sammy should have stayed captain.
