Looks like we're going to get an NBL team on the Gold Coast again after the new Gold Coast Arena funding was confirmed by the state government today. Question - would you rather a new brand for our NBL team or the return of the Rollers / Blaze?

Good question. My understanding is it was pretty close to being announced for a 2026 start in September last year when we hosted the NBL Blitz pre-season tournament, but we just couldn't secure the funding in time to make it a reality. Now the funding is secured so hopefully we get to host the Blitz tournament again in September this year and the NBL use it to announce our entry into the league and that would presumably be for the 2027-28 season. So not too long - just over two years from now.
In other non-AFL sport news, Current Manly & Queensland captain Daly Cherry-Evans announced yesterday that he'll definitely be leaving the Sea Eagles at the end of this season and there's some whispers that he's keen on a return to QLD. We know he's previously signed for the Titans (only to later renege before the cooling off period ended) but I don't think the Titans are in the running this time. I suspect he'll go to the Dolphins and there's some romance with that given he played junior rugby league with Redcliffe and his old man is a Dolphins legend. Anyone think the Titans could be a chance to pull it off?

Of all the water based team names they could go with, Rollers has to be the worst. Sounds like a wheelchair team.
Lowkey keen to have a Gold Coast NBL team, Almost be quicker to get down the coast and back when the Hawks are in town than a trip to the BEC.

I didn't mind gold coast having a team in the NBL .
It felt like in the 1990s, Queensland was the centre or heart land of Australian basketball, just like Victoria with the AFL and NSW with the NRL .

Teams are shying away from 'pirates' because of the violent nature
I don't see what is so violent about illegally downloading a movie
but the kids will love it

I think you’ve jumped the gun on this Gold Coast Arena. I can’t see it on the Olympic venues.

I’d still feel more certain if an event was listed for it.
The state government needed to hand the land over to the GC council in order for them to start building it with a private developer. It's planned to host the basketball during the Olympics and we won't be bound by state government deadlines, which means we can build it a lot quicker and gain entry into the NBL in 2027 amongst other events like musical concerts, UFC, WWE etc. We should be able to secure just as much, if not more, as Brisbane does with a venue like this because ours will be considerably better than the decrepit Brisbane Entertainment Centre in the middle of nowhere in Boondall.

All that these politicians are saying is................
the Gold Coast is in the box seat for:
- Upgrades to the Gold Coast Convention Centre and a new Gold Coast Arena.
That release doesn't mean it will eventuate...........they are politicians after all. You've only got to look at the Budget just handed down....My Age Pension got the huge increase of $3.30 per fortnight, enough for 1 Lge bottle of Leo with 10 baht left over. And I just had it with dinner tonight......
Believe nothing that you read and only half what you see...
