It went wrong on 2019 when all and sundry were excusing the team winning by 2-5 goals after leading by 6-9 goals at some stages during games….

This become the start of the pick and choose when to play at 100% or ease back to 50% in last quarters era…

It was then said we it cost us nothing because as we were still winning but it ended up costing us important percentage that when the hawthorn game came around and we dumped in the bed it meant more than Simpsons knew.

Percentage.doesn't.matter.

I remember there were some fairly partisan lines drawn here over the issue of our coasting to the line attitude. History now favours one side over the other quite dramatically.

We probably cost ourselves top 4 due to some of the leads we blew that year

Don't start giving me fairy stories about 2018. The players won that in spite of Simpson, not because of him. Proof of that is that in the second round of that year the boys had one of their best away wins of the season with Simpson at home attending to a family drama and forwards coach Jaymie Graham

6-0 against the top 4 on the ladder
9-3 against the top 8

We were the best team in the comp in 2018 and there isn't a doubt. Won under incredible duress with players unavailable and playing away from home too.

Tigers went 15-1 at the MCG and 1-4 interstate. Only in the AFL can you be good at one venue and be called a powerhouse. The Gold Coast Suns would be turning in their graves.

Middle of the year after our 10 match streak people forget we had a serious injury crisis. Went into R17 with 3 losses in a row, no LeCras, Darling, Kennedy, Ryan or Waterman up forward, no Barrass or Mackenzie down back. Won anyway. Went to the MCG and beat the Pies next week and lost NN for the season. Three weeks later lost Gaff for the season. Shep tore his hamstring off the bone in the QF. Down 5 goals in the GF. I think the hardest won premiership in the 21st century and it doesn't get enough credit.

Good post but I give more credit to the players than the coach.

What Simmo achieved from 2014 to 2019 was outstanding. He came up with the web and took us to a GF from out of nowhere. Once that got figured out, rebooted the game-style and won the flag in 2018.

And in 2019 things were going swimmingly right up until Willie decided to put some Gatorade in a bottle. And even then, if only the heavens hadn't opened up in the second half of the Richmond game, history may have been entirely different.

It was at this point that it all started going south. Selling the farm for Kelly. Followed by Covid. And god knows what happened in the hubs, but we handled it as poorly as any of the 18 clubs. That really was the beginning of the end for Simpson. But he was outstanding up until then.

I’ll bet there isn’t. Because flags are bloody difficult to win, you need a shitload of things to go right, and the idea of a side winning one with a coach that’s a liability is completely fanciful.

I'll have to disagree on the web, I believe it was the players and (Hickmott? Was he the defensive coach that year?) that came up with it when EMac and Mitch Brown were dead.

Yeah it was all the assistants, Simmo clearly a spud coach.

Reminds me that I actually have it on good authority that one of Clarkson’s assistants is solely responsible for the tactics that led to the 2013 flag….if only I could remember his name….
