Simon Goodwin: Why so little noise?

The Oliver contract would be hard to move. He has looked far better this year than last. And he’ll continue to build. But he’s on up to 1.3 million. So a club is going to have to pay 800k minimum in my opinion if Melbourne are going to let him go. Trac on a similar wicket. They’ll be hard contracts to move as much as clubs will want the players.
Melbourne will pay half of both contracts to facilitate a move, they need a new direction

There's still a good core of players they're just all mentally checked out and it's either Goodwin leaves so a new coach can bring in new ideas or they do a full rebuild.

Also North and Oliver is a bad fit as they have enough mids already. They have a poor key defensive setup so McDonald or Lever might be a good option.

As far as I can see the issues are mostly the coach. He needs to be moved on. A couple of players could follow but the core of young players is pretty decent. Plus some guys like Clarry and Trac who have some good footy in them at Melbourne if they want to commit. I’ll be very disappointed in Goodwin stays beyond this year. Hopefully he goes during the year.

Oliver id think he's best bet would be north, not many other clubs will touch him. The pies have no cap space, no young players and no picks. Cats will have seen this year and will say no. Doesn't fit essendons list or the dogs. Maybe west coast for a second round pick. But I think it's only north or west coast.

Will be interesting to see what they can get for fritsch and Salem though
Cats will not rule him out I reckon

Oliver has a massive ceiling, he's just a little fat and completely disinterested in playing football at Melbourne Demons. Plenty of clubs will take a gamble on being able to rehabilitate him.

Wouldn't surprise me if he found his old form at another club, but I'm happy just to hold him and watch him play out his contract in misery.
I don't think so. The game seems to be moving away from inside mids that can't kick. Can't see anyone falling over themselves to acquire him. The main benefit will be getting his salary off the books if you are the Dees because his trade value has plummeted.

The best thing Melbourne can do is clear out Gawn, Clarry, Petracca, Viney and May whilst they still have some currency. Go to the draft before it’s compromised by Tassie.

This list isn’t winning another flag. Time to reload and give more opportunity to the younger guys.

Don’t do what West Coast did. They’ll pay for the next 5-10 years.
Do they have much currency?

Gawn is 34 this year and looks to have dropped off significantly from last season. Pick in the 30s at best.
Viney is 32 next season, slow and poor user. Probably worth what Swans got for Luke Parker last year. ~44.
May just turned 33, is in decline and just seems like a real campaigner. 3rd rounder.
Clarry, dees should just be happy to get his horrific deal off the books. 2nd rounder.
Petracca would probably get them a mid-late 1st.

All in what they're saying is the most compromised draft ever outside of the expansion teams. They should've let Oliver go last year.

I think Oliver and petracca are gone, so too fritsch and Salem and pickett.

They will delist their older back up players and use gawn, may, lever, viney to teach the kids. They need a backup for Max, to play 8-10 games next year and lengthen he's career. Id go knobel at suns.

There's always going to be a spot for someone who can win the ball.
And for what it's worth, his disposal efficiency isn't actually that bad. Real problem is he's ****ing lazy.

Edit: I do agree though, our whole list is built around a pretty outdated style.

Without looking into it he seems to kick long to a contest often which is an effective kick, but he never seems to hit a lead-up forward on the chest (possibly because Melbourne don't seem to have any? :straining:) or nail an aggressive kick through the corridor.

You'd want good kicks around him, which the Dees don't have.

The whole team is shitting their pants right now. It's a disorganised mess, every man for himself type of football. The only players who seem to have any composure have played 3 or less games. Oliver loves a good, solid dump kick, but there's no confidence from anyone in the gameplan or their teammates, they're all playing well below their level.

From the three games we've seen Oliver, Gawn, Petracca and May are all basically in career-worst form.

You're right, we don't have a good kick in the team. McVee probably our best? Windsor alright.

What happened to Bowey? Looked like an elite kick early on. Salem was once a good user too.

Bowey copped a concussion and never really got back to his best.
He looked pretty good last week tho, minus one clanger, so hopefully good signs.

It's a club in total denial of the reality.

They swept Bartlett and Joel Smith under the rug but the rug is piled up like an elephant trying to hide under a handkerchief.
The club seriously owe glen bartlett a massive apology.
absolutely disgraceful for how they treated him.
In fact very similar to the playbook WC used on Ken judge

- basically vilified these blokes for essentially telling the truth of what was happening behind the scenes , but alas arse covering via rug sweeping was the only way both clubs approached the situation when it was obvious the offending people were the best players .and in Melbs case the coach himself.

Like with anything in the race of life …always back self interest , at least you know it’s trying

So their position is even worse than I thought. Honestly didn’t realise they were THAT old already.

Seen Clayton out as recently as 2 weeks ago on a Wednesday, about 10pm.
Doesn’t really seem past his issues. Carries on a bit.
On the pingers? Bit of cocaine? Or just doing some cheeky late-night punting?

Give us the goss.
