SFNL Div 1 2025

Ex Ormond players Ryhs Kennedy (Luke's brother) and W McCartney playing for St Pauls in their first game this weekend.

Doesn't say much for SNFL standard though when two Div 1 players can walk straight into their side, and one is playing in the Mids.

Both are brilliant lads who have come up through the Ormond junior system.

The coin offered in SNFL is very hard to say "no" to and St Pauls do "splash the cash" as they have a godfather.

Good luck to the boys but a huge loss to Ormond.

The local VAFA teams can't stop all these boys walking away because all they can offer is comradeship and that is a commodity that is worth less and less in the modern world.
Do u honestly think vafa clubs don’t pay players? 😂 100% all clubs do!

if you are talking VAFA, from the top couple of teams in Prem C up through Prem B and Prem A then sure players get paid, or they get them jobs.

But some of the clubs at the bottom of Prem C and lower, literally work off the smell of an oily rag. If they don't get player subs and have a couple of functions, they go into debt and operate from a dysfunctional loan from the bank, so no way can they pay players, hence they can't keep them either when clubs come calling from leagues like the SNFL who can offer $900 a game.

Thats why clubs like Old Paradians have moved out of the VAFA to the NFNL so they can splash some cash on players and don't have their juniors walk out the door for money.

Brown paper bags all sold out and no jobs for the average Joe's. Vafa players taken them all

Yes, if you are talking VAFA Prem A and Prem B.

No players are paid at all however if you get down in the weeds of small clubs in Prem C and Div 1 and the lower divisions especially standalone clubs like Ormond, Oakleigh, Elsternwick, Kew, Preston and Glen Eira who don't have the luxury of a school old boys' hand out system to rely on.

The VAFA is a two-tiered system.

Sorry to correct you , as you know everything about local footy , but now the combine of 13 clubs class themselves as an old boys club
Maybe look at Old Peninsula and the new recruits who have all been paid players on the Peninsula
Then you have Prahran who have pokies , where does that go

You are right Bedders. I shouldn't have included Prahran, and I didn't include Old Peninsula on purpose because they have a significant old boys' network pumping money into the club which you can see when you visit their ground.

When was the last time you went to MacDonald Oval

There is a vafa forum for you boys to discuss the vafa. This is a southern thread, take your conversation to the appropriate forums

Back the threads topics , Cracking weekend of clashes ahead looking at the fixture

All Stars v Narre
Beena v Bentleigh

Look the most intriguing ?
Thanks for that , totally agree , but it was the local footy expert
The 2nd game you have will be interesting , is that another Bentleigh home game ? i was surprised with the Beena result , or are the All Stars better than what people thought

The Beena v Bentleigh game is at Beena park.

Bentleigh have improved a lot. They really should have beaten St Pauls.

Cameron Bedford from De La Sale in the VAFA, having taken the coin at Bentleigh is a genuine A grader.

He will be up against Nathan Scollo, another De La Salle boy, who is now the best player at Murrumbeena

the point is Bedders that a lot of the top line players in SNFL are former VAFA players who have come over for some coin.

I watched Campbell Bedford and Nathan Scollo as juniors, and they were absolute guns. Both played for St Peters along with George Wadlaw.

Nathan Scollo played CHF for a premiership winning Sandy Dragons and at times was not outshone by Will Ashcroft and Harry Sheezel in the same team.

Now they are respectively the best players for Bentleigh and Murrumbeena respectively.

A great story of local boys made good and the system supporting itself.

It will be interesting if Dingley play Cheltenham in the Grand Final. The cops may need to be called in before the first bounce. The same thing happened in a previous very famous Eastern Suburban Churches league grand final in the 80s.

That’s not true about scollo.
He did play but played CHB was a chance Richmond were going to rookie him. He is very athletic but he was outshone by Ashcroft Clarke & Sheezel. who finished in that order in the best and fairest. Scollo wasn’t top 10.
Anyway i’m a fan and he will be a great edition to Beena and a quality Local player.
