So this years draft is chock full of quality SA talent - hmmm, what should we do. Just keep playing tonight's 22 and we should finish about 10th-13th.

As one of the great football minds of this century said "12th and loving it"

I heard Fagan not so long ago say something about this club is not one that can afford to drop down the ladder, have poor seasons, drop off.. so they have to be creative, stay around the mark etc.
So you know what aint happening.

I'm not sure (apart from obviously no one wants to be shit) why this club in particular can't afford to do that, but anyway.
Fagan has become obsessed with membership numbers. It's clear he sees that as his legacy as CEO. Dropping down even temporarily would hurt his ambition.

Many of the changes you’ve suggested would actually make us a better side. Could be the anti-tank.

I've noticed how relaxed I've been after the losses. Deep down I've realised we aren't in the race for a while now.

I can't see any way that we win it this year, we just aren't playing good footy often enough.

But if you look at West Coast and even Richmond, a down year is not the death of your window... If handled right.

We must play our young players to see if they are worth keeping.

We must completely change our assistant coaching setup.

We must change our strength and conditioning setup.

For god sake get rid of Burton and get an adult in that role.

Clean out the dead wood, take advantage of any player movement... Set ourselves for 2019 and beyond.

PS - I like Pyke as a coach, but how sad is it to look at this squad and think what it could have achieved with Walsh. He was cut from a different cloth wasn't he :-(

In this unique set of circumstances with a bumper SA draft crop and plenty of high picks in our hand, I don't think it will hurt one bit if we drop out of finals this year.

If we get 3-4 top SA juniors in the draft, surely the club could market that big time and sell plenty of hope for 2019 and the future.

It is obvious we won't finish top 4. You don't finish top 4 you don't play in the G F.

I want to see Murphy and Fog play as many games as possible and our depth players playing instead of top line players develop. CEY has taken advantage of this period. Greenwood has also improved.

Would be nice if ROB could get some games. But we know that won't happen.

We might still slip into the eight. But meh of we do.

For the 1st time this coming weekend I'm not even going to watch the game. (I'm going away anyhow). I've lost interest altogether as it seems our players have.

‘Tank’ is such a dirty word. I’d call it ‘preparing for next season’, and if the AFC has half a brain it’ll be preparing for next season.

Getting our gun players fit and injury free should be first and foremost. Whatever we have to do for that is fine by me. Sack staff? Make wholesale changes to the pre season program? Play Gallooch, Hampton, Wilson, Poholke etc? Just make it happen.

For those of you that had some hope that we had a chance still, tonight should have quashed that faint hope.

Once you come to that realisation it does have some benefits, it takes the stress out of it and you can think about what’s best for the club.

We could easily lose our next 4 games, which includes Freo and Hawks away, whilst we are still depleted. Then we play West Coast and Richmond away. We still have though games against Melbourne, GWS, North, Geelong and some others.

Some of you might not like it, but for us it means missing the 8 and finishing as low as we can.

Our main competitors have all benefited from low picks, our only one is Gibbs and he’s a ring in. This strategy has failed us for 20 years. And yes we made last year’s GF, but we lost and Martin killed us.

This is a super draft, we have to bring in quality talent and that must include a low pick below Port to have any hope to get a slider.

If Sloane does go, that’s 2 low picks.

Without elite talent we will continue to fall short.

This also means smart decisions need to be made.

Jacobs needs to be rested and we have to see what ROB can do with some games, quite frankly it can’t be worse than what Jacobs is offering.

Mackay? Piss off and Milera plays off half back.

Galluci plays, even if he stinks he plays.

Tex comes back, Fog stays, Jenkins pisses off.

Anyone who won’t be here next year doesn’t play, that includes Lynch if he’s going.

We won’t do it, but that’s what we should do.

Either way, we are going to fail, accept it and relax.

Love your thread

But when will you realise we are in this position because we haven’t replenished our team properly we don’t know how to draft a team that will be elite only competitive back pocket players and outside runners with your first picks is a waste but let Hamish dig a bigger hole for the club than we are already in. Then we ignore SA talent although first year in and fog signs for two years do you think that may have made the penny drop for our recruiting team that it’s easier and cheaper to hold on to home grown talent, probably not

We need a clean out of staff and unfortunately Roo, is all piss and wind, along with the recruitment staff who have failed at their recruiting to suggest they haven’t then make a thread like this is just plain hypocritical

Some hard decisions need to be made on who has failed in their jobs and it’s pretty obvious we don’t have a list that will win a flag in the next 5 years with the players we have about to finish their careers and the type of player we have drafted to replace them. Then we have the issue of cap room from players holding a gun to our head because it’s so easy for them to play the Go home card

As I said love your thread but don’t be soft and say our list has been replenished right it clearly hasn’t or the thread wouldn’t exist

I'd definitely add ROB before the etc

You can't send players on to the field to lose.

Losing hurts physically and emotionally

Farrrrk some people have no idea
Who said anything about sending them out there to lose??...

We play our youth... we rest our senior players and get their bodies right for a massive preseason and a tilt next year...

Tell every bloke that pulls on the jumper their position in the squad is on the line and to play their guts out.. let’s see who’s worth keeping and who’s trade bait/delist material.

We’re sending them out there to see what we have to play with next year win, lose or draw.

Rushing all are injured stars back in some feeble attempt to scrape into the top 8 is what will hurt physically and mentally.

Trade bait/delist list right now should include everyone on the list except;

Walker
Betts
Gibbs
Laird
Smithers
Seed
Crouch x2
Fog
McGovern
Doedee
Talia
Sauce.. I think we need to rest him not get rid of him.
Sloane (I think he’s gone anyway) and lynch depending on how much they want if they want to stay. Too much cash or too long a contract and they become trade bait.

The rest of the squad has to prove they’re worthy of a position in the squad long term. If they don’t then either see what we can get for them or Delist..

Most of them will step up and prove they are worth persisting with as there are some great players in our squad... but I can see six to eight that are on real thin ice..

Glad you think it’s safe to comeback after a couple of losses.

Your post makes no sense because you put the blame at Hamish’s feet when he hasn’t recruited over half the guys in the team. Last night you texted me you wanted Rendell back when clearly he had more say in putting the current team together. That’s hypocritical and stupid.

As for Hamish, his first two years he did not have first round picks. His first low pick was Matt Crouch.

He’s picked decent players with late picks.

You’re also a hypocrite in that you back in average senior players, players he didn’t draft and who continually let us down and then criticise players who have played under 10 games.

This thread isn’t conceding Hamish hasn’t drafted well, it’s conceding our injuries have meant we have no hope, no team would. This year is also a super draft so we should take advantage of a crap year and load up.

But anyone who has sat back and waited for us to fail to somehow then try and use it to vindicate his vilifying of a draft pick, just because someone he knows wasn’t drafted, is pathetic.

Season can't be abandoned at this point. The jury is well and truly out on the necessity of a top 4 position to succeed.

Need to get to the bye 8-5 if we can, last night would have eased that pressure. We now need 2/2 the next fortnight.

I think we can beat Freo, but Hawks unlikely. Even if we get to the bye 7-6, it's where Richmond was last year.

We are in an unusual position of having key players currently in cotton wool being prepared for the second half of the season.

You cannot write the season off when a top 6 finish is achievable, and there is another bye before finals. We may end up starting finals at home with a fully fit side, coming into form and with key players only having played half a season.

Now of course the wheels could fall off prior to this and we maybe even miss the 8 altogether. We will know soon enough.

But right now everything is still on the table and a second half of the season assault can't be ruled out

Do you honestly think we will get to the bye 8-5 with our current team? We have lost 3/4.

We are currently 1 game plus percentage from 7th.

Pete love your optimism, but tempering your expectations might make the season more enjoyable.

Don't want to hear excuses Ive been hearing them for 20 years

WE haven't got the team to win a flag!!!!

YES or NO?

Ha ha - nah I'm not pinning hopes on any of that happening.

Just trying to look at it from a what's possible perspective.

We could easily drop the next 2 in which case the season is gone at 6-7.

I'm also mindful of having a difficult fixture after the bye. It's still to early to rule out finals altogether, and if we do happen to finish even 8th, it will mean we have post season with probably a stronger side than at any point this year.

At worst we'd be a very awkward opponent.
