Past Sam Sheldon (2007-2012)

My point is that we don't even know if he will be cut or not. Think it's a bit weird people are just assuming it's going to happen.

Well we need to make some cuts. We're just going off the fact that he's struggled to crack the senior side since the start of the year, and was underwhelming when he did. I'd say he's more likely to be cut than Stiller and Hawksley, both of who I see being cut too, so sadly I don't think there's much hope for Sam.

Whilst I appreciate the service Sammy gave to the club, he just didn't look like he could make the next step at the AFL level and influence a game. Unfortunately my lasting memory of Sam was that glaring miss in the first quarter of the semi final against the Dogs in 09 which was at a crucial time of the quarter.

That being said, Mr. 3KZ's whipping boy, or simply referred as No.3, is gone, so I suspect between Hawkley's and Sheldon's delistings, that things have come out pretty even overall.:p

After 43 games, Sam Sheldon has been de-listed by the Brisbane Lions.

Sam played numerous positions throughout his AFL career including as a small defender and stints in the midfield, both with varying success. Throughout his time in the reserves, Sheldon was used as a bit of a mr fix-it playing a variety of roles often within the one game. It is somewhat hard to say how much, if at all, that affected Sheldon's development. Having been drafted as a midfielder, and lacking the physicality to play that role at the highest level, Sheldon struggled to settle down in the one position and make it his own.

Sheldon's greatest run of games came playing the small forward role in season 2011. Despite his lack of goal scoring and low possession numbers, Sheldon fulfilled a key structural element of the Lions forward line with his chasing and commitment to the man and ball. With Sam's strengths lying in the physical element of the game, weighing just 79kg (dripping wet), was certainly a restriction on his ability to impact games at AFL level. It is fair to say that blessed with a bigger frame, he certainly would have made his presence felt.

Despite his unwavering commitment to the contest, Sheldon was much maligned with certain groups of Brisbane supporters. Despite the criticism, Voss showed great trust in Sheldon, particularly throughout the 2011 season - something he can be proud of.

Having defied the odds and played 43 games as a fifth round draft pick, it seems Sheldon's career has come to an end at just 23. If nothing else, Sam has made sure that the number 3 jersey has continued to represent an unwavering commitment to the ball, man and club.
