Our first round pick (Carlton’s) for Butters.

Land Allen as a free agent.

That would be an excellent result.

Happy to pass on Harley Reid given they’d want our next decade of picks..
yep, I'd be happy with this. Our first pick will be well inside top 10 with the way carlton are going.

Port would want more than a top 10 pick for Butters though.

Throw in a 2nd rounder?

Carlton finish last
Hawthorn trade Carlton first for essendons 3 top picks (even without dodo, essendon is the club to do this)
Hawthorn trade one of those picks with Carltons second pick to West coast for Reid

Hawks still end up with 2 first rounders and Reid. Who loses? 😜
More likely
Essendon give 3 firsts for reid
Reid continues to be unfit and achieves only level of mcgrath
West coast trade picks to draft locals
We get more firsts for Carlton second and our future first (cause wce love deathriding is)

That’s the thing they all won’t be best 22 and there will almost certainly be one that wants out if they aren’t.
This ooga booga stuff is posted on here every year "Serong will want to leave if we don't give him games", "Ward will want to leave if we don't give him games", "Seamus will want to leave if we don't give him games"..... it hasn't eventuated at all, because players back themselves in to get a spot.

Look at Finn and Frosty as 2 very recent examples. Battle and Barrass come in, Frost says no thanks to other suitors. Finn offered more years eslewhere, also says no thanks.

We won't be trading out Lewis or any other forward because Allen wants in, and it's highly unlikely any of them ask to be traded because they'll want to be a part of what Sam is building.

That's not more likely at all.

Essendon are in rebuild mode, they wont be handing over 3 firsts for a single player when their supporter base wants them to start again.

Yeah it's the becoming public bit that would be the distraction and having to field questions with the media about it all year.
Think these days its just part of the game. Probably more of a distraction for West Coast considering he is their captain and playing this week. Probably die off a bit before the Hawks play again

I can tell you all that Oscar is 95% set on leaving Eagles.
I've mentioned my cousin that works at Eagles? She's also good friends with Oscar's fiancee Lorna.
They're seriously considering the move right now BUT there's no word if it's us or Brissy or someone else.

She (my cousin) knows what she's about, she's the one who gave me the early word last year that Tom was definitely coming.

Maybe that's why Sam and his wife have gone to meet with them, he's heard from his grapevine that Oscar is wanting out and has gone up there to sell us to him.

Genuine question. Can we afford both Allen and Reid in our salary cap without losing a few? I’m hoping the answer is yes but can’t imagine we can.

I’d much rather be picking over the entrails of another, stronger team, like Geelong or Brisbane.
It’s a bit like killing Bambi.
Bit torn on this one, how we would we feel if Chris Scott was spotted in a Geelong cafe with Newk or Sic for example.

I’d feel surprised because we aren’t a Bambi.

The reason we pick on the farked clubs is because they have talent languishing in misery and low performance. You can’t pull champions away from clubs that have a high-performance environment. You can easily pull them away from clubs that don’t.

WC wants to stop the raids? Then get their act together. Somehow, it seems that the GCS have managed to swing the boat around (I’m still a doubter, but let’s grant them a little kudos). WC and the other basket cases (Melbourne, anyone?) need to get their shit together or be pillaged.

You can’t expect extremely talented and motivated players with just a few years to chase their life’s dream of glory to languish in misery when they can actually do something about it and switch to a club that can make their dreams come true. That’s certainly not fair.

there are always delusional types in Essendon who think they are closer than they are; and also they look at the top 10 failures they had (recent year, can't quite remember if 2020 or 2021 where they had 3x top 10 and failed)

We are in such an enviable position right now.

The side is performing well enough to get the job done. We've knocked off two contenders in GWS and Sydney, beat the old enemy and ran over a fired-up Carlton that had a point to prove.

But we are seemingly not playing close to our full potential yet AND we still have several key players set to return, in; Scrimshaw, Lewis, Worpel, MacDonald and Dear.

A fit Lewis will be a real game changer for us. Adding contested marking to the forward line will have such a domino effect for the rest of the forwards.

And the youngsters are taking their games to the next level before our eyes - in particular Ward and Mackenzie really standing up in Worpel's absence was such a huge plus.

The depth of the squad runs very deep. We will have plenty of decent players looking for more opportunities at the end of the season. They will have some currency.

FYI - Brisbane were looking at Lewis even before they lost Daniher to retirement. I believe that was more of an exercise in due diligence than anything else.

TLDR, we have:
  • a young highly regarded coach
  • young team that has plenty of development left AND several key players to return
  • playing an exciting brand of football
  • media hype
  • cap space
  • Bluuz picks
  • tradeable assets
  • state of the art facility is nearly completed
  • players interested in coming and being part of the journey

They absolutely will. They've been planning this since he was drafted.

Problem for them is, why the fk would he wanna go to Essendon?!

I would kill Bambi if it means I eat. I think the club would too. We are hungry.

even if they would and I agree with SYL they wont, they absolutely shouldn't with where their list is at. They are in no place to give up what it would take if they are wanting to develop a list that will go back up the ladder. They have limited quality kids on the list, we have a young list that is playing at this level. We dont NEED to hit the draft like Essendon do

I was referring to WCE being Bambi, not us, thought that was obvious.
We were that languishing team not that long ago, it can turn quickly.
WC would have a better chance of improving if they kept their list together. And how do you know west coast and others don’t have their ‘act together’?
As I say, I would rather kneecap a genuine rival than a struggling team.

yes and no, if Allen does leave in free agency, that could be a win-win-win for the player and the two teams.

Hawthorn/Brisbane get the key forward in his prime
Oscar Allen gets to a contender
West Coast get what is likely a top 5 compensation pick to add to their own pick

if they held him there and they arent able to compete again in his contract then thats an asset that wont be worth this amount again.

Thanks J2S. I really wasn’t having a great day today but after reading your post man is life looking better!!

Would give this years 1st (Blues) and next years 1st for Butters. He is a star, would be the icing on the cake for our midfield and is only 24.

We’re making the same argument. I just made mine inelegantly.

I would honestly much prefer Butters over Reid. Reid is still unproven, he may or may not live up to the hype and you are paying full freight for the hype. 3 high first round picks is crazy for someone that might be a gun.

At least with butters, he is a gun. Would take him every day of the week if we could afford him in our salary cap.
