Is this shit ever going to get better? This is the question I keep asking myself.

We're 15 years into a rebuild from the last team that challenged, hamstrung with the inability to attract viable free agents and trades, unable to have enough bites at the draft to fix the issues in front of us and it seems like we're just spinning in circles?

We're sitting here holding onto our one decent young player in Nas petrified that he'll wake up see how much easier things could be elsewhere and leave. We have minimal youth prospects outside of players who are injured or actively playing in the 1's and our reserves team gets poleaxed every single week yet the bright sparks like Box and Arie either aren't picked or are flipped in and out of the side.

We've made so many drafting/development mistakes and it just leaves you feeling exhausted and that we'll just be watching the Brisbane, Collingwood, Sydney & Geelong's on repeat winning flags until the end of time.
I understand your points, but we're 2 years into a rebuild, 3 at most. All the time before that was just wasting time. Serious black hole stuff.

Just saw a video on Insta of Ross giving Garcia and Byrnes an absolute bake on the bench, looked like 1/4 time. Classic Ronnie Byrnes first quarter though, fumbly and lacking polish. Always takes him a few touches to warm up in a game.
I’m not sure watching from home what Garcia did but Byrnes should be playing at sandy he’s not afl standard imo.

Rough day but we were much better after quarter time. Plenty to build off in that performance when we stop playing top 4 sides.

I haven't seen him mentioned yet but I thought Dougal did well on return. It was a long lay off but he clearly put in the work to justify being brought straight back in. He doesnt get much love from the wider supporter base but his absence showed how important he is to us structurally and it's good to have him back.

I could see why some were suggesting that after his previous couple of weeks, but today he had 8 more contested possessions than anyone else on the ground, had the most clearances, 6 tackles, and 29 disposals, at 79%.

If he keeps playing like that he’ll help us beat teams who aren’t the reigning premiers.
Didn't have an impact on the game at all
22 handballs that led to what????

don't want to hate on him, but such an uninfluential game

The second Owens inserted himself in the middle we started winning. We need him bulldozing in there. And NAS too for his class.

I think windy needs to make way. His decision making and rushed kicks hurt us.
I don’t know why we don’t just use him as second ruck but in reality an extra mid.

It just won't change. Same **** every week. The last 8 years in here we've had posters defending the likes of Ross, Dunstan, Jones, Weller and Bruce just to name a few. We continue to play these guys because for some reason the club feels that they give us a greater opportunity to win the current match. But all it does is stunt the development of players on the list that could potentially resemble a league footballer.
We forever except mediocrity. Unless this changes we are forever doomed as a club.
The Jones fan Boys might come at me because he had a few kicks but if you can't see how much this kind of selection kills a club you will never understand.
Imagine if NAS leaves. Wowee.

We must be going well in the midfield if 29 disposals, 6 tackles, 21 pressure acts and 9 clearances is worth dropping.
Exactly. Things will pick up a lot if he keeps that up and Macrae can get back closer to what he was doing and we get Pou and possibly Clark back in there in the next couple of weeks.

For those thinking Boxshall is any kind of answer, I invite you to look at the sort of games that Owens, Garcia and Pou had in the midfield when they were thrown in there when they were really young.

They’d all shown plenty in the VFL like Boxshall is, but then they came in and had 4 disposal type games and it was like playing a man down in the midfield and it was a disastrous result.

As much as our midfield is struggling at the moment, it would be pretty miraculous if it wasn’t even worse if Hugh was thrown in there at the moment.

Garcia is much much better this year at AFL level than he was last, yet last year he was playing at a similar level in the VFL to what Boxshall is this year. So the likelihood is that Boxshall will be less effective at AFL level than Garcia is now.

Yet some are suggesting him as if he’s going to come in and make us immediately better.

The likelihood of that seems extremely low.

Howard was fine first up.

Byrnes should not be playing AFL football

I think has pace and endurance is what has kept him in the team, also puts his body on the line a bit. But I agree, long term he shouldn't be getting a game, his disposal and decision making isn't up to the top level.

Thought Dougal was very good. Got a lot of spoils in. His extra height is so noticeable.

We’re a bottom 4 side playing like this so when do you suggest we blood youngsters ?. What exactly is it we’re trying to get out of this year, because playing finals isn’t happening. Boxshall has size, speed and attitude and deserves his chance, he must play.

Exactly. And I get the urgency to see the kids play at AFL level but when the goal is developing them for long term careers, there is nothing wrong with leaving them at VFL level to play multiple strong games in a row. We aren't hurting their development by not pulling the trigger after a singular good game.

what about the other numbers, 22 handbells, 160m gained.

He's the captain, and the issue is that he is well below his best and having no impact on games

That’s true but easy
I’m no Jones fan but I get Lyon and co can’t just play all kids and still expect a decent FA to even look at us while we get pantsed
It’s a balance
As Clark and others come back I think you can rotate guys like Jones out introduce Box etc but you need to be careful you don’t throw them to the wolves
I suspect today was that …
I heard Lyon say Owens gave us something when he went in middle ….i agree now fckn play him there don’t let him rot in forward line
Same with NAS
Talk is cheap Rosco - you like actions ? Time to act
Mix it up

Credit has to be said we are rebuilding without going to the grimness that is norf, eagles or Richmond.

I know you need a mix. But it's as clear as day that Jones isn't a good footballer. We are banging our heads against a wall playing a bloke like him. What do we accomplish by gifting him games?

How on earth is continuing to play kids that will do a couple of good things then disappear good for their development or in todays case get completely pantsed.

I love what Garcia has brought this year in glimpses but he deserved to be dragged today. Just letting him keep jogging around having no impact is not acceptable. You learn more from your mistakes and failures than just cruising along in a game hoping to come good. So he needs to learn, no shame in that but it’s professional sport not amateur hour.

I didn't get to watch this game live(oh no 😪) but looking forward to the replay because I'm a sicko

I just checked the tracker on the afl app for this game - we ran further than the Lions, further at high speed, more sprints and more repeat sprints. Same as the Bulldogs game.
I find that even more concerning. Working harder just to get smashed. This "running" game we are trying to roll with doesn't work.

We are monstered around the contest every week, and Stocker is the only bloke on our list with any kind of thickness.

I know I am a broken record, but something is seriously wrong with how we approach strength standards. Could not be any more obvious, we are the least physically developed squad in the comp, and have been for 10 ffs.

There are just far too many blokes incapable of beating their opponent in a one on one contest. It's simple stuff, but we can't do it. I am sick to death of being undersized and bullied.

Take a little look at GCS draw…I mean fixture.
Haven’t looked, but I heard a few days ago they’d had the easiest rated draw for the season so far… and the easiest from this point on as well!!

The AFL is so corrupt it’s not funny.

If we ever win another flag it will be against monumental odds.

Not sure if it was mentioned on here at the time but a few months ago it was mentioned in the media that no team who play most of their home games at Marvel have finished top 4 since us in 2010!

The AFL is now set up for the big clubs based at the MCG and the 4 northern teams.

The rest are largely pushing shit up hill.
