Round 21 changes: Footscray v Melbourne.

No changes unless forced for me (maybe sub).

I thought Vanders was fine. There is a reason Vanders and McNeil are getting picked - they are hard at it, work hard, fast, shut down space and apply a shit tonne of pressure. Very important attributes to the way we are playing.
That shit tonne of pressure was a big factor yesterday. Very few easy transitions for Sydney.

Probably worth explaining to those who missed it that we're calling ourselves Footscray this week for Retro Round, alongside wearing the red collar.

Of all the weeks where everyone is hoping we don’t revert type….we revert to the Scrays….we really will be building something if we overcome that legacy

I hope not. Daniel did his now customary stop and prop even though the game was over. He doesn’t fit this team anymore I’m sorry to say. Bring back Smokin Joel

Yeah unfortunately Daniel was a movementum killer. He takes the easy option these days, and that's a 20m sideways kick that achieves nothing much. It's sad to see.

It's not only Daniel's decision making, his execution has completely fallen off a cliff. Crazy to say about someone who had a decent claim on being the best kick in the league at one point in time. How many kicks has he scuffed this season? He used to just be automatic. Boggles the mind.

I honestly think it's a confidence thing. Not playing him has been the right decision but the impact is that he can't rebuild the confidence. It really only ends one way and that's a fresh start.

Thoughts on Coffield’s game?

I was very very surprised that Bevo singled him out for praise in the presser. Thought he was our one weak link on the day.
Thought he was solid without standing out. Did put his body on the line and took a few hard knocks so I think that toughness helps balance out the backline. Allows Jones and Buku to intercept/spoil and Dale and Bramble to run. With Coffield and Duryea down back, that is a fair bit of experience and poise.

I very much enjoyed Jesse Hogan ragdolling the Melbourne defence at the weekend, and we've got enough options to do the same. Lever & May aren't what they used to be, though still formidable. But with our fearsomely tall attack they're going to have to put spud Petty on someone, or an outgunned McDonald. I lick my lips.

The issue I see with Baker for VDM is that Baker is a natural left footer and VDM right. I'm reasonably confident that VDM's primary role is being the fast play on option in that space between wing and half forward on the right flank and going I50 to marking targets. That and pressure.

Baker might get himself in a tangle on the side.

Baker isn't just a natural left footer, he has no right foot to speak of. I saw multiple times in the VFL this year where he tried to draw his opponent in by faking he was going to use his right and it never worked.

I suspect Darcy gets Petty, Jamarra is in too good form not to get May as his direct opponent.

not bombing it on mays head should be enough to nullify him.

The strides forwards this club has made over the last 10 to 15 years are amazing. A really well run outfit comparatively speaking to what they once were, both on and off the field. Looking forward to retro round Vs Melbourne.

Just don’t bomb it on May and Levers heads. That’s what they set up for every time.

I don't want to jinx the team, but they've quietly dropped the tactic of bombing it on the best defenders head in recent games. Apparently it wasn't getting the results they wanted. Still fly for the same mark, but it goes OK now we've got genuine crumbers

They are definately still bombing long but that is all part of getting there quick. All a forward really wants is a kick vaguely to their advantage and a chance to compete without being outnumbered. Once we kick long to space it puts speed and athleticism into play which advantages us, as opposed to bombing to a stationary pack where strength and experience wins out.

Not sure what game people were watching regarding Caleb Daniel. He had six touches at 100% in 15 minutes.

Petracca is a huge loss for them. He is the one that hurt us the most in the middle when they needed someone to step up. Their other MIDS are only warm form wise. Need to keep Fritsch on a leash, nullify what will likely be Gawn dominating the ruck, and don't bomb it to May/Lever. If we play the way we did the last two weeks, it will more than enough to get the win.

Freijah for Daniel is the main change this week for me. He has no real position at the moment, and Dale, Bramble, Freijah are covering that half back line.

Jones to Fritsch again.
