The Richmond game last week had some parallels to when GC came from a mile behind to beat us in their first win. A side loaded with new picks, rebuilding. So I went back to look at Gold Coasts result after their famous victory against us. Interestingly they lost the next week by 140 points.

I remember tuning in to that game at quarter time and feeling super depressed about how shit we obviously were because the score was 94-1.

Wines had by far the most contested possessions (18, next closest Boak on 12), clearances (10, next JHF on 7), hard ball gets (7, next Rozee on 4). What really hurt was his kicking efficiency of 12.5% which is ****ing laughable, even for an 'inside mid'.

Rozee, Butters, and to a slightly lesser extent JHF are far too attacking and leave us exposed if they don't win first possession. Unfortunately, our next dedicated stoppage mid is Drew and he is just not capable of consistently impacting the contest like Wines is.

So yeah, Wines burning the ball hurts but I just don't think it's feasible to drop him.

Just makes us missing out on Dunkley sting even more - he's the exact player we need in our midfield.
Agree re Dunkley & agree we need Wines contested ball winning ability until we can recruit a better version. What I want to know though is it possible for the coaches to develop a system around ball ups where Wines wins the contested ball & has enough midfielders in close proximity for him to handpass (not kick) without turning the ball over. I know this sounds simplistic & it may be too easy for the opposition to counteract but we need to find a better way to utilise Wines strengths to benefit the team.

Personally I'd play him half forward, he'd be a improvement on what we've played up forward over the last couple of years.

We will win and win very well. It will mean absolutely nothing though, as that is what should have happened. Richmond getting up last week was not an indicator at all for how they will perform this year.

Ryan Burton, Esava Ratugolea and Ollie Lord, all players who many of us were criticising for their lack of effort in 2024. That suggests that our list is not as deep as some of us might like to think it is.
Lack of effort is not really a list issue though. We could have 22 star players talent wise & they could all lack the will to win. But those 3 players don't exactly inspire me to attend the footy.

What's the bet we've pivoted already to a "play the kids" year because we think that makes us impervious to criticism.

The Ken fan club will say it's not Hinkley's fault, he was selflessly playing the youngsters.
Koch will say we did pretty well considering we had the xth youngest list this year.

Note: "kids" will include Rory Atkins getting a run of games and not include any young talls getting a run.
You had be concerned until I read your note

Despite Finlayson getting dropped, he's not playing SANFL. Will get the week off as a held back emergency.
The insanity continues.

He had to be dropped, but give him a chance to redeem himself.

Being the only player dropped, having played 1 game in a new position, in a near enough 100 point loss has already told him his dud coach thinks he's the biggest part of the problem. Sitting around for a week is the worst thing for him.

Our problem is when a player is dropped due to his lack of effort we struggle to find a physical like for like replacement. Finlayson is 197 cm and we are replacing him with a 186cm spindly kid. No reflection on Moreas as he might go alright and may have earned a call up but he is not a key defender. Zerk-Thatcher is still 6-8 weeks away so you would hope that Ken has a plan B to get some additional height into our defence. Against Richmond we may get away with a short defence but against other sides it is doubtful.

Same problem for years now, lack of depth and nobody really kicking the door down saying pick me.

He’s really, really bad.

Watch how Geelong play him and develop him. Hinkley cannot develop talls.
