The Buddy conundrum is a very interesting topic.

There is no doubt that he has lost a step and is a good 5-10 metre shorter kick than he was. And he may not be our number 1 key forward any longer.

But to say he is definitively not in our best 22 is another way of saying that he is now our number 4 forward - that may be a stretch. As much as I respect Hayden's endeavour, Buddy still provides a greater threat overall.

I'm not sure I agree and we saw it play out in real time against St Kilda.

Yep. The thing that stops Buddy taking McLean's spot when fit, is whether Amartey is fit enough to back Hickey up.

So you don't think McLean is a good pack mark over the last 8 weeks?
He has the ability, but if you're only getting 1 or 2 contested marks a game, some of which are closer to goal, then I'm not sure it can be "invaluable" pack marking (down the line).

We go down the line from defence a lot. Assuming it's his role to offer an outlet or come in late, he's either not getting to many, or he's not successfully clunking as many pack opportunities as people think.

He's been solid at contesting (whether he wins or not), doing the backup ruck work, but sometimes his contested marking ability gets confused with outcomes.

Buddy's played 9 games this year and his direct opponent has received coaches votes in 5 of them. That for me is what differentiates him from McLean & Amartey in a negative way. Even if they are not taking marks or hitting the scoreboard themselves, those two make contests, bring the ball to ground, and keep incoming balls alive, which limits the impact of defenders.

Of course the odds there are going to favour them over Buddy, as Buddy gets the best, most-likely-to-be-dominant defender every week. But in games where McLean and/or Amartey have played without Buddy this year - three of them - the only time the opposition's best defender has polled votes was Tom Stewart in the bloodbath at the Cattery.

I just remember the time when the Nick Haynes and the Luke Ryans of the world routinely killed us, and I feel like McLean and Amartey are our way out of that worry.

Just my opinion.

This is a good post. Bolded the important bit. This is where he has improved massively. He's not getting beaten in one on ones often, which was always a strength of Reid's. If he can clunk a few more, and bring the per game numbers up a bit and tidy up the goalkicking, he's a real key. Effort is absolutely there, can't fault that.

Yeah, I'm not having a crack. He's the best contested mark in the side on a good day. Heeney up there with Amartey. But... consistency isn't really there for it to be labelled invaluable.

Maybe because doing well on Buddy gets attention. Doing well on others is expected, so doesn't really matter how well they might do.

I’m just going to say it:

If he’s fit enough, I hope Buddy plays VFL (instead of the club pretending he’s injured).

The VFL kids would gain a massive amount & that’s a far better outcome than having a fit Buddy sit on the sidelines.

I just worry that we’re too hung up on legacy / status issues.
He's a ****ing employee of the club and he should do what he is told.

Or maybe they're just having really good games on Buddy? For starters they all had top 3 games of the season for them in terms of intercept possessions when they played us. Letting the best in the comp do what they love to do is generally not a good sign.
