Autopsy Round 12, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs St Kilda

That down the ground free against Reid was SO SOFT. I'm almost at the point of giving the game away if that shit gets paid
It was a 50/50 that went against Reid because he had just mouthed off to the ump 12 seconds earlier and the ump wanted to square up. Hard to say categorically it wasn't there but Reid being lippy was what guaranteed it got paid.

I called it

I expect a few people to be disappointed this week. The Saints are terrible but they should be slightly less terrible than us.

It was a better game than last week in terms of effort and winning contests but the Saints were terrible themselves. Gaff and Sheed weren't horrible but they're a long way off Kelly, Waterman and Hunt. I'm pleased to see Ryan going up another level. His confidence is growing every week. Bailey Williams has done pretty well over the last season and a half but I think I'd rather run with Jack Williams up forward and playing second ruck when Oscar returns. Defense was immense but the ball movement out of half back was similar to the first three weeks of the season. I'm not normally one to whine about the umpires but the standard was not at AFL level today (but by no means cost us the game - we have to be better).

In the context of the season that loss doesn't cost us anything. No one gives a **** about the Rising Star anyway and we will beat North while giving Reid another rest.

I'm mildly annoyed about the result, majorly annoyed about the team that was picked, but otherwise not sure it's a full on meltworthy result.
We are a good chance to get rolled by North if Reid and Kelly are out

We need good stories though and Harley deserves rising star but if some pleb wins after Harley and Darcy are rubbed out it means FA . most footy fans know who the best are.

No one cares Judd never won a RS.

But yeah , annoying.

Also , I think North will beat us without Reid. We are puffing to the bye line

Positives:
  • Ginbey's game was great
  • Chesser's first half
  • Cole was solid in defence
  • Got a game into Flynn
Negatives:
  • Missed Waterman and Kelly too much
  • Gaff, Sheed and Trew in the midfield at the same time. For different reasons they are all off the pace for AFL level.
  • Reid needed someone to help shake off his tag and only Yeo was capable of trying as the other three mentioned are concentrating on saving their own careers to sacrifice their game for someone else.
  • Although he has done a selfless job for us in the ruck.... B Williams needs to improve immensely to be an effective forward

Lastly: Reid's tackle - typical of a young first year player to get it wrong sometimes. Not sure he'll be suspended but... IF it results in a suspension and costs him the Rising Star.... THEN the Rising Star award is broken.

I'd take it if Harley won but history isn't exactly littered with superstars winning the award. The good story is every week with this guy fending off superstars of the game and kicking goal of the year, breaking tackles and grabbing hangers. No one can stop talking about him. Award or no award everyone knows who the real rising star is.

Ross dragged us down to his level and by putting the clamps on Harley, he made sure we out spudded his spuds.

+
  • Ginbey is building week by week and starting to show why we picked him
  • Flynn was good for his first game. Hopefully he continues to grow into the side
  • Barrass and Gov had their backpacks on again
  • Ryan is slowly building his confidence back
  • Reid’s first half
  • Thought H. Edwards quietly had a solid game, took the game on a few times
-
  • Once Harley got tagged we looked woeful
  • Harley earning himself another trip back to Tongala with that tackle
  • That umpiring. Christ. It wasn’t even one sided, it was just bad.
  • That last quarter. Coming out of D50, there was no movement, no options, no creativity, nothing. Just the same shit every time.

Bailey Williams ... I rate him in the centre bounce. That's about it at the moment.

Has a good leap, decent ground work follow up in the centre bounce and normally gets a few clearances out of the middle.

I think Jack Williams won't be far off overtaking him though.

Bailey's a great athlete, not the best mark unfortunately. Can he become something else? A strong runner? Can we adapt his game so he has more strings to his bow?

  • Reids tackle
  • We capitulated not long after.

No positives.

Give me all your thumbs down....... i....do...not...care.
It wasn’t necessarily the tackle itself but the fact that the commentators and the Sainters played it for all it worth. As a result, HR lost his confidence, and some of his composure. The umpires did him no favours, and he was close tagged. He is a wonderful player, but will maybe become even more mentally tough after today. Not a criticism of HR; I just think he may never have been in this type of situation before…

I just don’t understand what we are doing as a club.

Gaff And Sheed weren’t too bad today, but why are they in the side at all? do we think that we are going to play finals? Surely we can’t be that delirious?

We should be bringing in and keeping in young guys to have a look at them, see what they have to offer and develop them at AFL level to see what they need to get better at for improve on.

Secondly, why do we bring guys that dominate at a lower level in a certain position into the team, and then play them in a position that is not the one they dominate in? It doesn’t help the young players confidence, and it doesn’t help the team. Trew attended one Centre bounce from what I saw and he won that clearance, then he was sent to the forward line again to play out of position and Simmo just loves doing that shit. It makes no sense.

Thirdly, how long do we have to watch Bailey Williams have no idea of how to play as a forward before they stop doing it? His best has been when he filled in as a Ruckman and he’s taken some great marks around the ground, but whenever he goes forward, he can’t take the Mark or he can’t kick straight. Today at least he kicks straight with the one mark that he did take, but one Mark is not enough to be a forward when you’re that size and strength.

Last, why are we not instructing our Big players to put a block on for Harley when he’s got a tag on him? This is the sort of shit that a local level coach would do. If we arent trying to tank then I don’t know what the **** we doing.

This should be another year of developing young guys and not wasting our time with players that we know our past and won’t take us to a flag. We should be seeing guys like, hall, Burgiel, dewar and Johnston for more than one quarter or more than one game to see what they’ve got.

It just drives me ****ing crazy.

Will say I'm happy to see Reid angry and passionate. Great teams play unsociable football and push the lines on physicality. His aggression and body work should be an example to the rest of our list to ****en well dig in and make your presence known to the opposition.

Cost us goals though at the same time due to a lack of (dare I say) synergy with the rest of the backline.

Clumsy player who gets in bad spots.
Nah Gov was worse than Hedwards and Barrass today.
He overshot many marking attempts and got pulled WAY up the ground we got our pants pulled down over and over again.
I once saw him today all the way up near the F50 defending. it was horrendous.

Was more annoyed at selection and then at the TK and Waterman news than I am now. Actually surprised we held the lead for big stretches.

No ball movement and only plan of attack was capitalise on turnovers or rove the pack well. Think most of us would have predicted that element once teams were named.

Got frustrated at the ground because I like it when they win but in reality a two goal loss on Thursday night would probably have been above par, given how slow I assumed we’d be in every facet.

Simmo was pissed off - but it was all on you Simmo. Select Sheed and Gaff, what did you expect. For Christ's sake, get rid of them, and get some speed into the team, even if they are not quite ready yet - get experience into them - into those who may take us to the promised land. Gaff and Sheed won't.

Has a long way to go as a forward. Pretty likely to get squeezed out when Oscar is back but may be able to usurp an inconsistent Jack Darling by pushing further up the ground and creating contests.

The one thing he has over Darling is he isn’t completely cooked once the ball hits the deck.

What a horrible game to watch. Haven’t booed like that in forever, had passages throughout the game that were over officiated or just a boring maul.

Ginbey was good but faded, Yeo put in a shift. Thanks to Ryan and Cripps for the only highlights worth rewatching.

Saints backs just hoovered up every ground ball under 0 pressure. Frustrating.

Yep. Something in what you say. Reid’s endeavour can’t be questioned but he has to learn where ‘the edge’ is. Sure it’s a physical game but he has to learn the limits of what’s acceptable.
Good to see Yeo in his ear. Probably couldn’t get a more relevant mentor.

That said, I love watching him.
