Autopsy Round 1, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Gold Coast

The scariest thing about that result is in the past three years this team has won a total of 10 games and had three consecutive bottom 4 finishes.

So you might think with that sort of record we'd have used our haul of draft picks to restock our midfield and ruck, because those are crucial right? Right? And we would have gotten a bunch of games into those midfield prospects so however bad things might seem now there'd be some hope it would improve.

It's not like we would have repeatedly split picks, selected half back flankers over pure mids and traded for mature players..surely no club would possibly be that stupid?

The sad truth is I think our rebuild hasn't really started yet- it will start when Gov/Yeo/Kelly etc retire and the club belatedly realises it's flushed 5+ years down the toilet refusing to recognise reality.

Positives
  • Baker was solid across half back, one of our best
  • Dewar showed a lot of class, needs to be kept in the 23 this year
  • Same with Hutchinson, needs to be given the season to continue to grow into his midfield role
  • Cole performed well for a player that copped a lot of flack on this board the past few weeks
  • Ginbey and Hough both worked hard
  • AReid did okay for me given the context
  • Returning to the old song

= Hewett was quiet early but worked his way into it, should stay in the side before making any calls

Negatives
  • Flynn tried but didn't do enough to negate Witts, we really struggle against strong ruckmen
  • HReid looked disinterested at times, seemed to improve in the 2nd half, would expect more going forward
  • Long was underwhelming, prime candidate to come out for Ryan
  • Scoreboard crapping itself in the 3rd and never recovering
  • Optus food selection continues to be dog poo

You'll never win with those stats. They're a great midfield, but you can't be that non-competitive.
Any chance we can get a ruckman that can compete?

I think BBBW has to play - Flynn offers no second effort and Archer Reid is too light for the role - just gets shoved aside. If Jack Williams is fit and available I’d bring him in too.

Posting in circles here but what else do we do.

Worst part is, even though I wasn’t expecting a win, that was our ‘easiest’ fixture of the first month+

A tough loss would have been one thing, and then running into who I believed were going to be the top four. Granted the season hasn’t started the way Freo or Carlton would like, but a Lions/Giants/Freo/Carlton top four was looking reasonable for me in the offseason.

So that’s 0-5 before we next get to properly kick a ball in anger. Huge.

Baker's effort was great.

Real fears for our midfield, it's terrible.

Snake coming in with a calf and injuring a calf a pretty clear negative
Out of the loop because I was only reading calf on here. I presume it’s the same one?

Getting sad that my fav part of the season is the draft :(
This!

I've never taken so much interest in the u18s carnival

The funny thing is pretty much every other team has young guns coming through from the last 3 years

its so depressing

Look at that Ethan Read guy. He was Harley's year and he's kicking Govs butt

  • Ginbey, Hough continuing to grow, going to be great players for the club.
  • Graham and Baker. Would've been a 150 point loss without them today.
  • Opportunity for Mini to make a statement with underperforming players.

  • Tim Kelly. We get it, you cbf anymore
  • Midfield in general. Uncompetitive beside Graham. As much as I dont rate him we could've down with BBW's clearance work today.
  • Hewitt's miss, Archer Reid not taking the shot;
  • Duggans low footy IQ. What happened to the player he was becoming in 2018, had the oppo hearing footsteps as a genuine hard nut. Now he just packs his undies or let's himself down with bad decisions or disposal.
  • Team selection. Petrucelle > Long.

Anyone associated with the club has blood on their hands for killing this once great club.

Sweet a rug through it. From the doorman and everyone. Happy clapping seals who clapped their hands have blood on their hands as well.

The recruiters and anyone who has involvement need to be black listed. To sign off the recruitment and trade moves in 2024 has set up back forever. If you were a bystander you are also to blame

We are so ****ed it's not even funny. Believe me I'm not annoyed or angry I could see this a miles away. Tasmania draft has killed us

----
We draft players that are second the ball but show their tackling and aggression.

Even though they should have been first to the ball. It all makes sense now.

Hmmmm not like you to go early. 🥴

Was undeniably awful but putting a line through the game plan because one of the worst teams in history over the last few years didn't nail it on the first attempt feels like an insane overreaction to me

And I thought teams that finish in the bottom 4 got easier draws.

Well, where do I even begin with that disaster? The Eagles took the field against Gold Coast, and if that was our "best 22, " or close to it then we are in serious trouble. There's something fundamentally wrong when you trot out your full-strength team and barely scrape through as competitive. As flat as I’ve ever seen a team come back from a pre-season. Matt Flynn was about as mobile as a log in the middle, contributing absolutely nothing. Witt’s had 68 hitouts…..

And let’s not even talk about the skills—honestly, I don’t think we could find worse in the whole competition. Kicking? Abysmal. But hey, I guess when you’ve been chasing arse all day and can’t get any consistency in your game plan, it’s no wonder your skills go out the window. It’s as if we’re not even putting in the basics, and when you can't nail simple kicks under pressure, then you know you’re in trouble.

Too many non-existent or just didn’t have the heart to make things happen. Leaders within our club making horrific efforts or decisions. I could go on and on, but the point is clear: when your best 22 looks this poor, you have a serious problem. This isn’t about bad luck; it’s about a complete lack of urgency and execution. There’s no pride, no fire. If we can’t even turn up for a game like this, then what’s the point? The whole team needs to look in the mirror, because right now, we’re miles off it. Really puzzling how you get a club so sub-standard when you are in a league that has salary cap protections.

+ I wrote in a thread earlier in the week that I was approaching this game with foreboding and dread as there was a good chance we would be worse, and it came to pass but at least I was prepared for it.
Gibney good, Baker and Cole ok.
Archer Ready was no worse than Flynn in the ruck.

- seeing players in the first half raising there arms to the bench with WTF is going on looks on their faces doesn't fill me with confidence that the coaches were on top of their brief.
Harry Edwards hasn't improved over the years.
Gov had a dirty day.
All the players who were talked up during pre season showed us it was all deluded fluff.

I mean it’s also partly not our fault. Splitting picks has almost been a necessity because of how f*cked the draft system currently is.

We’ve been consistently getting pick 1-3 followed by a pick in the late 20s or early 30s

Compare that to North getting a top 5 pick for Ben McKay and a bunch of other firsts for being shit, plus all the academy rorting going on, and we really don’t stand a chance at getting hauls of top end picks.

Richmond literally had to sell the starting 22 to get what they got and the jury is still well and truly out on whether that is going to be good long term or land them in worse trouble.
