Autopsy Round 1, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Gold Coast

For the record I'm bitterly disappointed with yesterday's outing. Waited 6 months to watch the boys come out with a fresh attitude and show something - through a combination of naivety and optimism I thought we could be a chance to catch GC napping and a bit rusty to take it up to them but alas that was not the case.

My biggest issue at yesterday's game was I think either McQualter was too slow to react to the stoppage dominance of Witts and Rowell. Witts fair enough - maybe try something like either jumping into him or standing side by side - I dunno, something. Rowell should've been given a hard tag by Graham.

Flynn also should've been told unless you're competing in a stoppage you fill the hole in front of King/Read. Edwards was getting towelled up by King and needed help.

Let's be realistic here, we're coming from a long way back, we were labelled the worst AFL side in history not that long ago. McQualter has his work cut out for him and this first hurdle and fall and how he reacts to it is a big moment for him and the club. Will he be able to change the player's mindset on what's required in terms of intensity and commitment? I really hope so. He has an opportunity to lay down the law and I hope he takes it. I hope it's something that can be like half time in that derby we were getting smashed in (2015?).

Bit damning yet obvious the real intensity and never say die attitude came from Baker, Owies and Graham - shows something has been amiss in our preparation and mindset of our players for some time - Ginbey, Hough, McGovern and Waterman from yesterday not withstanding.

Now we wait and see how the team and McQualter reacts, but it's round one with a stinker of a side that we're trying to rebuild, probably best to take a breath (and be disappointed) but hold out a bit to see how it's handled.

Im not as depressed about it as some are.

Id be looking at the rebuild Hawks went through under Mitchell.

Took them from 2022-2024 midway of last year to really look like a dangerous side and it took time for him to implement a brand new style of football.
Yep. Game 1 under a new coach and, effort aside, it highlighted that we played our preseason games against Richmond, North Melbourne and ourselves. It was good to see Mini throw the magnets around and let the kids have a crack. I particularly enjoyed seeing Hutch and Hewett in the middle after half time even though they were out of their depth.

How many players and staff have been turned over in the past 3 years?

A lot has changed.

Just aren't seeing results in game 1 of the new coaches reign.

No sugar hit for us.
true.

In a way that's good.

Can cover a lot if we had a close win but competitive would've been something.

I keep hoping we are tracking like Adelaide who went from a GF loss to 7 years out the 8 and are now looking ready to get back there.

Feel like we are coming from way further back so maybe by like 2030 we can think finals if all the pieces fall into place.

Tbh this website prob makes people feel much worse than if they just watched the shit show and then got on with their lives. Similarly it’s a nice echo chamber when we are winning, but it might be time for some people to just log off.

This is so accurate. Was depressing watching the game yesterday, then logged onto here just to see if there was something I missed and wanted to curl up in a ball until October.

BigFooty is the best place to just vent because otherwise people go out and do silly things

Fair observation.

If people want to get rid of energy maybe they could do something positive - like ring the club to say they want organisational change at the Beagles? That is, how can we properly develop the potential of our list without an effective reserves set up?

Just an idea as an alternative to doing ‘silly things’.

How was rotto?

Quite nice thank you. Changed so much since I was there 10 years ago, just so many shops and eateries. Basin was a bit rough but had a dip and a bit of a ride around. Really need a bit more than a day to get it all in without rushing, like an overnight stay would be ideal. So many people there which is not my preference.

Didn't look at my phone all day until halfway through the 4th watching the replay, probably why it was such a buzz kill to see us get destroyed after making that effort.

You are "bitterly disappointed" and have the rest of your post bagging players but on the previous page of this thread you were criticising other posters for being too negative, creating a negativity echo chamber and suggest they should log off?

Absolutely bullied at the coalface yesterday. Boys against men stuff.

You could see glimpses of the run and gun gameplan but too often we were undone by a fumble, an errant handball or players not pushing hard enough into the space ahead of the ball.

It's no surprise that the 2 players familiar with that gameplan - Graham and Baker - were arguably our 2 best.

Graham in particular had a knack for finding space ahead of the ball to create an option and then really impressed me with his footskills. I thought he would be just defensive grunt through the middle but I was wrong.

Care to list which players I bagged mate, also where I said people were creating a negative echo chamber and they should log off?
Or are you too full of shit as per usual?

I expected bottom 4 this year. I was never one of the posters buying into the magical new gameplan hopium.

That said i was hoping that even if we lost most games we would be competitive, put up a fight and keep the margin respectable. And i could consider that as progress.

But that obviously didn't happen yesterday. And i think i had forgotten over the summer how hard it is to watch games where you get a 100 point belting or close to it until i got reminded yesterday. Makes you feel like all the pain we have been through already has been for nothing and we are yet to take our first actual step forward out of this hole.

Can you explain why it is OK for you to write negative posts but not anybody else? Or are you too full of shit and confused to explain your hypocrisy?

Again, list the players I bagged or where I said people shouldn't post anything negative.

Seems you're caught out in your own lie and are now trying a different angle.

Full. Of. Shit.

For me the biggest disappointments out of that game were:

  1. The end result. 87 points....man i thought we were getting past the shellackings.
  2. lack of any pressure from the midfield. the mix is just off. i feel like we are putting square pegs in round holes. we have the weakest midfield mix in the league and it has been like this for years. im just pissed off as we all see it, but **** all has been done to address it.
  3. Waterman injury. They said him being subbed was precaution. i absolutely call bullshit. he'll probably miss a few weeks or be playing hampered if he somehow gets up.
  4. My preseason optimism is ded.
  5. The worst thing is, we will likely finish last...trade out pick 1 for 2 picks in the teens and bring in warner and 3 half back flankers with midfield potential.

How are we comparable to anyone at this point? We are breaking records in terms of worse teams of all time. We are clearly miles behind Hawthorn.. maybe even North

Midfielders vs flankers is the more correct term IMHO and then we got one problem with our flankers. All our flankers are actually slow

I get Mini wants to make some fast game plan but he has a small and slow team to do it with.... Its the right idea, wrong people to do it with. In saying that I got no iidea what plan could work from here....

At this point can I remind you that we are ONE game in and Freo was flogged, Carlton were flogged, St Kilda were flogged Port were flogged, Collingwood the week before were flogged.
Brissy lost their first three last year and we know how that went .
